Excited to hear a cool story to go with the awesome art.

Creatively Blurring the Line Between Ice Cream and Flowers
16 aug 2013 13:49

A few months ago, photographer Parker Fitzgerald was honored with the task of shooting the cover for Kinfolk Magazine. The issue focused on the coming of spring and, in light of that theme, Fitzgerald created this series of Ice Cream and Flowers. Piled high on top of ice cream cones, the gorgeous displays of flowers look good enough to eat! (Although please note Fitzgerald's cautionary P.S.: Don’t eat hydrangeas with, on, or instead of ice cream. They look pretty but are mildly poisonous. You’ve been warned!)

Brad Pitt's Intimate Photos Of Angie.
15 aug 2013 17:43

W magazine's Creative Director Dennis Freedman came up with a brilliant way to show the world one of the most talked about and photographed woman, Angelina Jolie in a new, different light. He suggested this project to Brad Pitt, who's favorite hobby is photography. "I was surprised that Brad accepted the challenge," says Freedman "Last time we collaborated, I was struck by his sensitivity to the subtleties of photography. I knew that he possessed a highly tuned critical eye and would be very demanding of himself. Still, I wasn’t prepared for the beauty and intimacy of the images he made of Angelina and the children." Check out these very intimate and beautiful pictures taken by Angie's loving husband at their Provence, France hideaway.

These Photos Look Kinda Fishy
14 aug 2013 12:58

What do most people do with fish they bring home from the market? If you’re normal you’d probably gut it and eat. (Actually if you’re really normal you buy that stuff pre-cut so you don’t ever have to look at their cold dead eyes staring back at you.) If you’re… not so normal like Paris based artist Anne-Catherine Becker-Echivard, you might make a weird-ass photo series of fish working on assembly lines or in laboratories. The series is called “Les Temps Modernes” (Modern Times in English) probably because in these modern times no one’s going to question your sanity for doing something like dressing up little fishies and taking pictures of them.

Playful Minimalist Posters Depict Classic Movie Characters
15 aug 2013 14:00

Art director, illustrator, and graphic designer Olaf Cuadras created a series of playful movie posters that transform each story into minimalist designs. In the series, simply called Minimal Movie Posters, the Barcelona-based artist developed concepts for some classics including The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard, and Terminator 2. The prints feature very simple, flat illustrations that portray the main characters of the stories, many of whom boast a bright pink nose in what seems to be Cuadras' signature style. The bold blocks of color and simple fonts reflect the vibe of the movies, while many of the cartoon depictions are actually quite recognizable. Cuadras also pairs the characters with various props. For example, in the Die Hard depiction, Bruce Willis's character points his machine gun to the sky with a burning building in the background. In The Big Lebowski depiction, The Dude and Walter stand atop the central plot point, the ruined rug. Any movie fans out there will just love the very fun and vibrant collection that visually captures the essence of each film.

Dr. Seuss Body Art

Make up artist Lex Fleming did this series of Dr. Seuss body art. She’s got One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, The Cat In The Hat, The Lorax, and more! They’re all super impressive not to mention incredibly nostalgic. Reminds me of my pappy learning me how to read all those years ago. I was a late bloomer, so like, two, maybe three years ago. But I’m not ashamed. As they say: better late than never. Or as pappy used to tell me: you aren’t getting any younger and you were never that good looking to start off with. Maybe it’s time you learned how to read.

Extraordinarily Odd Photographs From A 1972 Rothschild Party

There have been few dinners parties quite like it. It’s December 12 back in 1972, the night at which Marie-Hélène de Rothschild held her famous Surrealist Ball at Ferrières. As you can probably guess by her surname, she was a member of the ultra-wealthy Rothschild banking family. To be invited as a guest, was the ultimate seal of approval from Parisian high-society.

Creepy Haunted Art Gallery for Kids in Japan
22 aug 2013 12:18

The folks at Torafu Architects realized that art appreciation is just too boring for today’s youth, so they decided to make it more interesting. Did I say interesting because I meant terrifying. They created a haunted art gallery exhibit for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. The exhibit features replicas of fine art that are not quite right. Like the eyes in some paintings move and Mona Lisa’s got hands coming out of her face. Scary stuff. Although slightly less scary when you enter a secret passageway that lets you manipulate the artwork yourself from behind.

An Important Life Lesson Inspired by Calvin and Hobbes
28 aug 2013 14:28

This fantastic illustrated story is a heartwarming reminder to never give up on what makes us happy in life, even if obstacles and social expectations get in the way. It was created by Australia-based freelance artist Gavin Aung Than of Zen Pencils, a cartoon blog featuring inspirational quotes adapted in the form of playful comic stories. The project, entitled Bill Watterson: A cartoonist's advice, is a hand-drawn tale based off a speech given by Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes. Than chose Watterson's words because he says, "To me, Calvin and Hobbes is cartooning perfection—that rare strip that has both exquisite writing AND gorgeous artwork. A strip that managed to convey the joy of childhood, absurdity of humanity and power of imagination all through the relationship between a boy and his stuffed tiger. And most importantly, a strip that was consistently laugh-out-loud funny." In Watterson's creative style, Than translated the thought-provoking message into this playful, lighthearted comic that basically tells the story of events from his own life.

Spectacular Shots of Japan's Summertime Fireworks Festivals
29 aug 2013 13:39

While many of us have to wait for special holidays like New Years or the 4th of July to see a spectacular fireworks show, those living in Japan get to enjoy them almost every weekend throughout the summer (though most are held in July and August). The signature summer event in Japan is called Hanabi, which means "flowers of fire" in Japanese. It's easy to see why as these incredible fireworks shows involves fireworks that appear like blooming flower arrangements. As Japan Monthly Web Magazine states, "The creation of fireworks is to arrange flowers, so to speak. The timing in which they are launched displays the craftsmanship behind them, making the fire flowers bloom in perfect intervals." Hundreds of thousands of spectators come out to see some of the main fireworks shows where experts bring out the most advanced pyrotechnics and synchronize them in stunning fashion. Here are ten of our favorite shots that show just how breathtaking it can get.

Portraits of Quirky Characters from an Alternate Universe
29 aug 2013 13:49

Travis Louie is the master of developing odd little characters who convey quirky personalities. His illustrated figures boast antlers and fangs and strangely shaped heads, and he pairs each unique portrait with a creative story in order to provide a bit of background about each imaginative character. To achieve the dramatic, old-fashioned feel to his illustrations, Louie creates monochromatic images with acrylic paints over graphite drawings on smooth illustration board or wood panels. He merges supernatural, alien features with human qualities to create the unique beings of his own imaginary world, a world that he says is "inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters who appear to have had their formal portraits taken to mark their existence and place in society."

Surreal Illustrations Merge Dreams and Childhood Memories
30 aug 2013 14:10

St. Petersburg-based digital artist Alex Andreev recently unveiled the 9th installment of his ongoing series titled A Separate Reality. The collection features remarkably surreal illustrations of an alternate universe where skateboarders are guided by flying stingrays, masses of land float in the sky, and there's little difference between an enormous airplane and a monstrous octopus. Each image is brimming with elements from real-life placed in unconventional compositions, making them seem like weird yet wonderful dreams. Andreev's imaginative works borrow just as much from his own creative dreams as they do from his childhood memories. By merging these two sources of creativity, both conscious and subconscious, the artist produces entirely unique scenes. There's a sense of enthusiasm for exotic environments that think way outside the box, awarding residents of Andreev's fictional settings the freedom of free falling and diving through the clouds without a worry in the world.

Hyper Realistic Paintings by Simon Hennessey
02 sep 2013 10:38

Simon Hennessey is a Birmingham, UK based artist who paints realistic images of famous landmarks around the world as reflected in the lenses of a pair of sunglasses. Like most hyper-realistic painters, Hennessey’s process starts with the camera. But instead of simply copying the photograph, the artist proceeds to add or remove details, depth, add textures, form and color values, thereby creating an illusion of a reality not seen in any photographic source. “My Paintings therefore appear clearer and more distinct than a photograph. constructing my own interpretations of a reality results in blurring the boundaries of what is real and what is made up,” said Simon Hennessey. “I use the camera only as a source to assist me with gathering information.”

Surreally Absurd GIFs by Bill Domonkos
05 sep 2013 12:57

Visual artist and experimental filmmaker Bill Domonkos manipulates archive photos and old film footage into surreally absurd gifs. The multifaceted artist's otherworldly creations reflect his fascination with repurposing and combining moving images of yesteryear. Each gif is wackier than the next, presenting a wild scene clearly accomplished with digital editing and special effects. Domonkos' affinity for working with vintage, black and white images adds to the curious nature of his work. His altered take on the past is like one big sci-fi experiment, reminiscent of early avant-garde cinema. Instead of a simple portrait of a woman's profile, the artist adds his creative touch to simulate a kinetic mechanism running endlessly on a her headgear. In Domonkos' world, it is almost fitting that a projection of a jockey riding his race horse plays on a loop in a sink bowl.

2013 NY Fashion Week: 14 Men's Styles We're Glad Never Got Popular

Here is the basic idea — a bunch of designers you can’t afford show off clothes you’ll never own to a crowd of famous people you’ll never get to meet. Occasionally, there are naked boobs. Instead of showing pictures of the absurd 2014 clothing lines, we went back into the archives to check out the awful styles of the past. Sadly, any of this stuff would work on the runway today. Here are fourteen men’s styles that thankfully never filtered down to your local Target.

What If Mark Wahlberg Was IRON MAN

Official Comedy created this funny short that gives us a look at what Iron Man might be like if it was set in Boston and starred Wahlberg. The guy they got to play the actor may not really look like him, but he's definitely got the vocal impression down. The short features Tony Stark battling The Mandarin and Obadiah Stane while trying to save Pepper and Fenway Park. It's pretty entertaining, and I hope you enjoy it!

New Trailer for Keanu Reeves' Other Martial Arts Film, MAN OF TAI CHI
06 sep 2013 15:27

Keanu Reeves is all about the martial arts films these days! He's got 47 Ronin coming out, which looks awesome, and then there's this Man of Tai Chi, which also looks pretty cool. Reeves not only starred in this movie, but he directed it too. It kind of has a Mortal Kombat vibe to it, especially at the end when Reeves yells out, "Finish Him!" Set in modern Beijing, the film follows the spiritual journey of a young martial artist (played by Tiger Chen) whose unparalleled Tai Chi skills land him in a highly lucrative underworld fight club. As the fights intensify, so does his will to survive. The film incorporates an innovative camera technology that helped capture the 18 fight sequences, which take up 40-minutes of the film. They used Bot & Dolly's "Iris," which is the world's most advanced robotic motion control camera system in order to capture the action up close and personal with camera moves only possible before in video games and other CG environments. Then the fight sequences in the movie were directed by renowned action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping (the Matrix Trilogy, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon). So we know those are going to be amazing. Check out whats in store for us in the trailer below!

The Most Morbid Photo Series You'll See Today
07 sep 2013 14:12

Ready for the most morbid question you'll be asked today? If you were to die tomorrow, what photo would you choose to be displayed at your funeral? Photographer Frieke Janssens is behind Your Last Shot, a set that takes that thought-provoking question and turns it into an intriguing series. “In reality, those left behind need to quickly find a photo that is ‘OK’ and usually requires some Photoshop retouching," he states. "How would the deceased feel about the chosen photo? Maybe he or she would have untagged themselves from it?” You can actually get your very own last shot for the high price of 835 euro or about $1,100 US dollars. Frieke will take your portrait, you'll get a team of professionals to do your make-up and styling, and you'll come away with your very own portrait baked in oval porcelain. As Frieke says, "Your last shot will not be your cheapest shot, but hey... you only live once."

Reading through the tweets is a quick reminder of how easy life can be sometimes.
