Birds are social animals – they communicate using visual signals, calls and songs, participate in social behaviors including cooperative breeding and hunting, flocking, and mobbing of predators. Unfortunately, we rarely get to see these fascinating moments of their lives, but thanks to photographers we can finally get closer to them (especially with big, heavy 500mm lenses running for between $5,000 and $9,000). Meet Johh&Fish - one of the most popular ornithology photography teams around Flickr. They are brother and sister living and working together for over 20 years, however their photography career started only in 2006.

China’s deserted fake Disneyland
10 jan 2013 12:03

Original

Along the road to one of China’s most famous tourist landmarks – the Great Wall of China – sits what could potentially have been another such tourist destination, but now stands as an example of modern-day China and the problems facing it.

Situated on an area of around 100 acres, and 45 minutes drive from the center of Beijing, are the ruins of ‘Wonderland’. Construction stopped more than a decade ago, with developers promoting it as ‘the largest amusement park in Asia’. Funds were withdrawn due to disagreements over property prices with the local government and farmers. So what is left are the skeletal remains of a palace, a castle, and the steel beams of what could have been an indoor playground in the middle of a corn field.

That's too weird, robot-dog
10 jan 2013 12:15

original

The U.S. military-funded robot dog program now has two electronic canines in training to haul gear for soldiers over rugged terrain. Each member of the pack is also 10 times quieter than its predecessor robot, which should make it easier to hold a conversation or sneak up on an enemy. The Legged Squad Support System (LS3), as the Boston Dynamics’ AlphaDog robots are known, are being developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a sort of an intelligent pack mule that won’t freak out when shots are fired or a mutt walks by on the other side of the hiking trail. In the video below, it’s clear that the robots are far from stealth, but their moving parts are quiet enough to hear the robots' footsteps on the ground. The previous version of the robot was so loud that all you could hear was the sound of its motor.

What Would the World Look Like After the Apocalypse?
10 jan 2013 16:54
We all survived the 2012 apocalypse. We also survived the Rapture on May 21st 2011, the year 2000 end of the world, the Jehovah's witnesses' end of the world prediction in 1975, as well as in 1941. Essentially, the end of the world has been happening since 643 BCE, and so far, the world is still rotating on it's axis and revolving around the sun. What would our world like to day, after the apocalypse? That is what philosophers and artists think about. Me? I think about what I am going to make for dinner tomorrow.

Ghoulish Zombie Portraits!

Rob Sacchetto is probably one of the coolest zombie portrait makers, EVER. He has come up with a way to immortalize the human condition eternally-- by making them into zombies. Admittedly, probably not the best way to be immortalized, but definitely the coolest looking. I'd like to see him make a Dick Cheney portrait. I'm sure that he is a zombie, since he keeps eating all that unicorn blood to stay alive. Check it out:
