Video Directed by Jérémie Périn

It’s a depressing reality that these days, most of the music videos released feature that all too familair R&B / pop hybrid complete with those horrible auto-tuned vocals & usual bevy of buxom bikini clad types awkwardly strutting around in too much fake tan. So count your lucky stars that a director & animation wizard like Jérémie Périn still exists and even more so that he’s chosen to work with upcoming Parisian electronic artist DyE on his new single ‘Fantasy’. To be perfectly honest, we’d never heard of DyE’s (aka Juan de Guillebon) until we saw this clip – but on this evidence it’s not a name which will be unknown for long.

You’ve probably heard the phrase “Merry Ol’ England” right? Well as you’re about to see, those Brits / Welsh / Scots certainly do like to have a cheeky beer. Actually make that LOTS of beer. When it comes to London, you might have visions of the magnificent Buckingham Palace, the Queen’s guards, high-end fashion prowling the streets, designer shopping at Harrods, the imposing Big Ben / London Eye or the steeples of Westminster Abby – where politicians debate and shape the future of the emerald isle. Across in Cardiff (the capital of Wales) you might envisage the majestic Millennium Stadium or the imposing Cardiff Castle and finally if you head up to Scotland (and its capital the World Heritage listed Edinburgh) – you can’t stop but appreciate the genuine wit, buzz and excitement of their world-famous Edinburgh Comedy & Fringe festival. What you don’t see (until now) is what happens after dark in those capital cities. With the Queen safely in bed and tourists cooped up at the hotel bar – out comes the dreaded Friday night UK public! And thus begins the endless rounds of cheap cider & tequila, sweaty servings of fish & chips, heat lamp lit curries and a dirty kebab on the way home. Heavy drinking and basically assuming your alter-ego each Friday night is part and parcel of life in the United Kingdom. If you don’t wake up in the gutter with tandoori all over you – it hasn’t been a good night. So with that in mind, enjoy this hilarious selection of the youth having a lot of fun all over the UK….and lot of booze!

Everyone remembers their first horror film, for me it was hiding underneath the covers shaking with fear while Freddy haunted dreams and Ash battled the ultimate evil of the Necromonicon. These classic movies, along with their earlier counterparts, began my life long love of horror. While walking through the aisles of the local video store the horror section always provided the most intrigue, with the promise of knife wielding dolls, zombies and tongue in cheek gore displayed by the video covers and posters hanging on the walls.

Shows like Boardwalk Empire and Underbelly: Razor have given us a great glimpse at what the criminal underworld looked like in the 1920′s. Men of the era wore dapper suits, hats and shoes shined to a mirror finish while respectable women wouldn’t leave the house without a long dress, hat and gloves. This series of police photos from Australia were shot in the police stations and prisons of New South Wales between 1912 and 1930. They are incredible, not only for the composition of the photos which at times resembles that of a series of professionally staged portraits, but also for the subjects themselves who seem quite at ease posing for the camera. Many of these photos wouldn’t have seemed out of place above the mantle piece. Sydney criminals then, not only were they wayward deviants looking to break the law at every opportunity, they often did so looking rather stylish!

This immensely powerful photo series by Mark Laita looks at the contrast between individuals, their life choices and vocations. It’s a truly stunning series of portraits that serve to remind us all, that we’re all created equal – it’s just that sometimes life has a habit of getting in the way. Here’s what Mark had to say about his work: “In America the chasm between rich and poor is growing, the clash between conservatives and liberals is strengthening, and even good and evil seem more polarized than ever before. At the heart of this collection of diptyches is my desire to remind us that we were all equal, until our environment, circumstance or fate molded and weathered us into whom we have become.”
