Unexpected Things That Dogs Can Smell
18 jan 2013 09:13
Let’s face it: as a species, we’ve ruined nature. We’ve melted the ice caps with our spray-on deodorant; turned the rainforests into barren sludge; and even taken the atom—the building block of the universe—and turned it into a weapon. But nature still seems to love us. This can be shown by the incredible number of ways dogs can help us, with their amazing sense of smell.

Young Girl Who's Best Friends with African Wildlife
18 jan 2013 06:09
Born in Africa to French wildlife photographer parents, Tippi Degré had a most unusual childhood. The young girl grew up in the African desert and developed an uncommon bond with many untamed animals including a 28-year old African elephant named Abu, a leopard nicknamed J&B, lion cubs, giraffes, an Ostrich, a mongoose, crocodiles, a baby zebra, a cheetah, giant bullfrogs, and even a snake. Africa was her home for many years and Tippi became friends with the ferocious animals and tribespeople of Namibia. As a young child, the French girl said, “I don’t have friends here. Because I never see children. So the animals are my friends."

Tailless Scorpions
18 jan 2013 06:03
Amblypygi is an order of invertebrate animals belonging to the class Arachnida, in the subphylum Chelicerata of the phylum Arthropoda. They form a separate order of arachnids alongside the spiders, scorpions and others. Native to New Zealand and Australasia. Amblypygids are also known as whip spiders and tailless whip scorpions (not to be confused with whip scorpions that belong to the Arachnid order Thelyphonida). The name "amblypygid" means "blunt rump", a reference to a lack of the telson ("tail") carried by related species. Despite an offputting appearance, they are harmless to humans.

The Maned Lioness Phenomena.
17 jan 2013 14:38

Animals have genetic mishaps just like people, and one such case has been discovered in the Mombo area of Botswana‘s Okavango Delta. Maned lionesses have been regularly spotted there since 2002. These maned lionesses look exactly like males therefore making them safer, since other animals are more scared to steal food or attack the pride. This phenomena most likely occurs because the fetus is exposed to higher than normal androgen levels ( male hormones such as testosterone ) during gestation period. The president of the big-cat conservation group Panthera, Luke Hunter believes that there's a possibility of the lion population in that area being genetically predisposed to this phenomena.

Eli Martinez, 41, travels to Tiger Beach off the Bahamas multiple times every year and has struck up an incredible relationship with the local sharks. He says that by going through the exact same routine for the past 10 years, he can now not only spot which shark is which but that they recognise the interactions, too. Best Zoo in America
17 jan 2013 06:41
Perhaps the best place to view animals without trekking into the wilderness, the Zoological Society of San Diego is actually a zoo and a park, each worth its own day trip. The San Diego Zoo comprises 100 acres of tropical grounds and 800 species (including a pair of pandas on loan from China). The 2,200-acre Wild Animal Park, 32 miles northeast of the zoo, features several natural habitats and a Galápagos tortoise that must have been around when Custer was fighting his last battle. Visitors can view roaming herds of exotic animals from a five-mile-long monorail or by way of a walking safari. Designed to help breed endangered species, the park has seen some 20,000 creatures born within its borders—including 120 rhinoceroses—since it opened in 1972. Many of the zoo's younger residents hang out at the Petting Kraal.
