Videos Detail Importance of Angles When Taking Selfies
13 aug 2013 15:25
This excellent video, which hit the web a few days ago and quickly went viral, clearly demonstrates how where you hold your camera can make you look like two different people. One of those people is not very attractive either. To prove that this is not a fluke, we’ve amassed all of these response videos proving angles really do have quite a bit of importance when it comes to having your picture taken. (As evidenced earlier by the Pretty Girls, Ugly Faces meme.)

Incredible 388-Year-Old Bonsai Tree Survived Hiroshima Blast
13 aug 2013 13:33

If trees could talk, this bonsai (known in some circles as Hiroshima Survivor) would have a lot of stories to tell. The 388-year-old Japanese plant has seen its share of events, good and bad. Perhaps most remarkable, though, is the fact that it survived the atomic bomb that devastated Hiroshima in 1945. Located on the Yamaki family compound, less than 2 miles from where the bomb exploded, the white pine was miraculously safe from harm as shards of glass exploded through the property because of the blast. Luckily, the tree was unharmed and the Yamaki family didn't suffer any permanent injuries. First planted in 1625 and originating on Miyajima Island, the bonsai is said to be a valuable tree due to its rarity. Back in 1976, the bonsai master Masaru Yamaki gifted the ornamental tree to the American people as part of Japan's Bicentennial. It is now a permanent resident of the Japanese Bonsai Collection at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington DC. Coupled with its rich history of survival, the bonsai (the oldest in the collection) attracts many visitors to its new home in America.

Cosmic Photos of Planets Crafted in Ordinary Cooking Pans
13 aug 2013 12:54
Rome-based artists Matteo Gallinelli and Giuliano Antonio Lo Re have a collaborated on a visual project titled Pan Planets that features realistic images of four major planets—Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus)—as well as the moon and the sun. Despite seeming like a satellite or telescopic image, each astronomical figure is actually a composition of ordinary materials in a pan. Using a crafty combination of water, ink, dust, and coloring along with a clever lighting setup, the duo transforms average skillets into cosmic orbs full of texture and mystery. Each faux celestial body in the series is also accompanied by some facts about its respective formation, terrain, and known history.

In Tempo Skysraper in Spain. What a Fail
13 aug 2013 12:40
This story is hard to believe but it was featured in major US and European magazines, so I believe it's true. At 47 stories, the In Tempo skyscraper in Spain is set to be the tallest residential building in the European Union. There is just one problem... There is no elevator on floors 21 through 47. The builders simply forgot to build it. The In Tempo building was originally planned to have only 20 stories. Wanting more tenants and buyers, the client asked that the building be enlarged. So the architect simply added 27 stories -- without adapting the elevator shaft and lifting machinery accordingly. Unbelievably, the oversight supposedly wasn't spotted until January 2012 when the building was almost ready.

Mountain Villa on Top of Apartment Block
13 aug 2013 12:02

In a bizarre display of selfish hubris, an eccentric Chinese professor in Beijing turned his little attic home at the top of a 26-story apartment building into a virtual mountaintop penthouse. Over the course of 6 years, he brought up all the rocks and building material he needed to construct a mountain around his home and add balconies and landscaping.

All without permission, of course.

Hilarious Images Of Dads Dragged To One Direction Concerts
12 aug 2013 20:25
There’s really not a whole lot to add to the premise. One anonymous Redditor shared these images without a date or location, simply the title, “Dads dragged along to the One Direction concert.” But since that universally translates to “Grown men at their lowest, most emasculating moment” not much else was needed. I did some depressing research on my own and am pretty sure the pictures are all from one of the four (FOUR!) Staples Center concerts taking place now, so there you go. Not that it really matters. This a global phenomenon and these men are just a sampling for future anthropological studies.

Watch 'Shocking The Day The Clown Cried' Footage
12 aug 2013 20:18
By the early 1970s, Jerry Lewis was a has-been. His finer days, when he was starring in The Nutty Professor and The Patsy and selling out clubs with his comedy partner Dean Martin, were out of sight in the rear-view mirror. These days, with the exception of 1983′s The King of Comedy, his biggest claim to fame is, “Guy who’s popular in France” or possibly “Guy who sounds like Dr. Frink from The Simpsons” or maybe simply “Asshole.” There’s one movie of Lewis’ from 1972, however, that film fans have been fascinated by since the day it was announced — and no one’s ever seen it. It’s called The Day the Clown Cried, and it makes Life Is Beautiful look like Flubber by comparison. According to Entertainment Weekly: The Day the Clown Cried was a 1972 Holocaust drama directed and starring Jerry Lewis that was famously decried for its bad taste before ever being released. Lewis then buried the film, denouncing it as “bad” and made him feel “embarrassed.” The script and a few stills are all that survive for public consumption — until now, when YouTube user unclesporkums found this 7-minute clip of behind-the-scenes footage and shared it online yesterday. (Via) Classic unclesporkums move. Anyway, when asked about the movie earlier this year, Lewis cried, “It was all bad, and it was bad because I lost the magic. You will never see it. No one will ever see it, because I am embarrassed at the poor work.” Well, now we’ve seen it, and it’s all bad. The lesson here: clowns are terrible. Also, f*ck you, Jerry Lewis.

Watch Katy Perry's Emoji 'Roar' Music Video
12 aug 2013 20:09
Katy Perry‘s music is like an ice cream sundae with soda and candy: it’s terrible for you, but also SO good. She’s completely shameless and I love her for it. Take, for instance, the music video for “Roar,” the first single off her upcoming album, Prism (due out in October). Nearly the entire thing is told through emojis. It’s so fast paced and brightly colored and I can’t keep up that I get the same feeling that I have when I’m watching a Japanese game show: I might have a seizure but I don’t want to look away. It’s too fascinating. I’ll never look away from you, Katy Perry.

How Much Money Would You Pay For This 'Breaking Bad' LEGO Set?
12 aug 2013 20:03
If you’re unfamiliar with the website Citizen Brick, then you’re clearly not a dopey adult LEGO fan like I am, but for the sake of brevity, it’s a site that allows people to have a little more fun with their LEGO sets by adding all sorts of strange new characters and especially different types of body parts and accessories. But they have outdone themselves this time with the new “Superlab Playset,” which is obviously not an official Breaking Bad LEGO set, but it’s the closest thing that you’ll find on this planet. This may have just jumped The Simpsons on my LEGO must-have list. I have to admit, I was a little surprised by the $250 price tag of this incredible set, because I immediately guessed that it was going to cost around $1,000. I’m not saying that it should cost that much money, but there are definitely people out there who would pay that much, and they’d probably sell their TVs to afford it. If you want one of these sets to play along with during this final season, get your orders in now, because they take 2-3 weeks to ship. Maybe spend all that time brushing up on Dustin’s ridiculously complex theories about Walter White and Co.’s destiny.

Video: Ashton Kutcher Offered Some Advice At The Teen Choice Awards
12 aug 2013 20:02
Ashton Kutcher was the big winner of the Ultimate Choice Award at last night’s Teen Choice Awards, or as he described it – “the old people award.” After all, 35-years old is basically death’s doorstep in the eyes of teens, or so I remember it being that way all those years ago when I was playing with my pogs and checking in with my parents through my beeper and pay phone. In his acceptance speech, the star of the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic Jobs admitted that his first name is Chris, which anyone could have known with a simple check of the ol’ Wikipedia, but the screaming teens who listened to his speech beyond that may have heard some very inspirational words, as the star of Dude, Where’s My Car? and What Happens in Vegas has really taken his studies of Jobs to heart. It almost makes us forget about that whole trucker hat fad. Almost.

Paula Deen Wins Racial Discrimination Lawsuit
12 aug 2013 19:10
Food Network star Paula Deen found herself under fire when allegations of racism and sexual harassment came to light from a recent deposition. In turn she lost her job and was unable to save face, even with a strange series of apology videos and asking people to throw rocks at her. Yet after all that, the judge has thrown out the claim filed against Deen for some intriguing reasons. The judge in the case ruled that the woman who filed the suit, Lisa Jackson, “has no claim to racial discrimination” because she’s white. Apparently, white people cannot be offended by racism. Jackson tried to argue against the ruling by saying someone in her family is bi-racial, but the judge determined that even if such a thing were true, she was at best an “accidental victim” — which may or may not be the hit follow-up song to ‘Accidental Racist.’ However, the case is not completely thrown out, as Deen and her brother still have those sexual harassment charges to deal with.

Katy Perry Accused of Copying Sara Bareilles Song + Fan Wars!

Katy Perry‘s new single, ‘Roar,’ is getting a ton of press — unfortunately, for mostly bad reasons. The undeniably catchy tune is catching the attention of music critics and Lady Gaga fans, who keep pointing out that it sounds almost identical to Sara Bareilles‘ ‘Brave’ — igniting a “stan war” between the Katy Cats and the Little Monsters. So how did the trifecta of musical ladies respond? Perry hasn’t responded to allegations of copying ‘Brave,’ though she did praise the song when it was initially released:

13 Ridiculous Walrus GIFs Because Walruses Are Ridiculous

Walruses truly are ridiculous creatures, and we think even better than photos to demonstrate this are GIFs, which capture the (sort of) majesty and (almost) grace of a walrus even better than a still photo could. Outstanding Time-lapse Of Europe's Architectural Masterpieces

A key part of any holiday is taking a zillions photos of your travels, but few of us would have the dedication and resolved displayed by Luke Shepard, a 23 year old videographer. He set out on a whirlwind tour of Europe, visiting 36 cities across 21 different countries within the EU. His sole aim was the document and record some of the most loved and celebrated architectural masterpieces in the world. In total he came back with a staggering 20,000 photographs. Many of these that went into making his Kickstarter backed project ‘Nightvision’, a stunning timelapse of all of those historic monuments at night, away from bustling crowds and searing heat. Here’s what he wrote to all of his Kickstart supporters: “After several months of hard work the project is complete. We came out of this journey with just over 8 minutes of successful footage. Mind boggling, I know! Keep in mind, the footage is composed completely of photographs (25 photos/second). Now, after a month of planning, a month of raising funds, a few months of shooting, and a couple months of editing, I have a final product that is approximately 4 minutes in length! I am quite pleased with the outcome and forever grateful for this opportunity which you have given me. I could never thank you enough.” Rest assured, you’ve rarely seen Europe look quite so beautiful.

Impressive Collages Pieced Together From US Dollar Bills
12 aug 2013 18:25
There’s a lot you can do with a dollar bill, but not many make use of it in quite the way visual artist Mark Wagner does. He creatively bends, twists, cuts and glues one dollar bills into these striking and complex portraits. When asked about his work, Wagner had this to say: The one dollar bill is the most ubiquitous piece of paper in America. Collage asks the question: what might be done to make it something else? It is a ripe material: intaglio printed on sturdy linen stock, covered in decorative filigree, and steeped in symbolism and concept. Blade and glue transform it-reproducing the effects of tapestries, paints, engravings, mosaics, and computers—striving for something bizarre, beautiful, or unbelievable… the foreign in the familiar. The likes of Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama and George Washington are all brought to life and creatively assembled over hours of painstaking adjustment and planning, but the end results we think you’re all agree are almost priceless.

Breaking Bad Characters as Chemical Diagrams
12 aug 2013 13:57
In anticipation of the return of AMC's Breaking Bad for the second half of its final season, Shutterstock analytically assembled "chemical diagrams" to represent significant characters from the show. The graphic series that the blog calls Bad Chemistry: The Character Elements of Breaking Bad features nine of the show's most prominent characters, from high school chemistry teacher-turned-meth cook Walter White and his former student-turned-sidekick Jesse Pinkman to fast food chain owner and drug kingpin Gus Fring. The clever minds behind the diagrams have used the show's thematic design choice of abbreviating words like chemical elements found in the periodic table to concoct their own skeletal models of each person's chemical makeup. Like a bunch of Heisenbergs, each chart the blog produced is a unique "Blue Sky" that reflects character virtues and flaws, accompanied by a quote and a few significant icons.

Blending Iconic Faces From the Past and Present
12 aug 2013 13:52
Then and Now is a powerful collection of mash-ups by photographer and graphic designer Marc Ghali. In the series, the Canada-based photographer creatively blends old black and white photographs with sections of colorful, modern images. He perfectly arranges the new and old fragments so that, upon quick glance, viewers might believe they are looking at just one subject. However, each compilation features two faces representing the past and the present. The subjects are often related in regards to professions, ranging from singers and actors to historical leaders. Some of the mash-ups include Rihanna and Diana Ross, Brad Pitt and James Dean, and two British princesses, Kate and Diana. It appears that Ghali really has an eye for matching faces as the many similarities are quite striking. The artist says, "I wanted to do something fun creatively. I was inspired by a series [by George Chamoun] called Iconatomy, and wanted to draw on parallels between influential figures pasts and present in an interpretative way." It's certainly fascinating to see how the world really hasn't changed much across so many decades of time.

This is What 24 Hours in New York Look Like in Just One Picture
12 aug 2013 13:50
Taking a picture usually involves capturing a single moment, a motionless fragment of time. However, New York-based photographer Stephan Wilkes has managed to capture the passage of time in a single photograph. His “Day to Night” photo series explores the many changes that take place in Stehphan’s beloved city of New York as it transitions from day to night. Completing this project took great dedication on Wilkes’ part. He had to actually stakeout the city in one spot for approximately 15 hours for each composite photograph. He had to take hundreds of pictures of the Big Apple and its most famous places and then spend 4 months picking out 30 to 50 suitable ones. The selected photos then had to be blended into one composite image that reflected the changes that took place in that location between sunrise and sunset. By creating this photography project, the artist expressed his fondness and love for his hometown. Thanks to his dedication, the photographer brought seemingly surreal photographs to life and filled them with movement, vitality and the passage of time. Wilkes’ “Day to Night” series proves, once again, that New York City is the city that never sleeps. Also, be sure to check out the time lapse series by Fong Qi Wei. Singapore-based photographer captures the passage of time in visually beautiful layered collages.

Still, good for this guy — he’s figured out how to basically walk up to a stranger and ask them to make out without seeming creepy. We couldn’t have done that.

Man Afraid of Flying Foolishly Goes on Aerobatics Flight

If the anxiety of flying makes you too nervous to enjoy this video, just close your eyes and imagine that somebody is scaring the bejesus out of Miss Piggy.
