The goal of this project is to encourage students to creatively voice their opinion.” While their English isn’t always perfect, it’s good to see that teenagers are teenagers, no matter what country they live in.

Tiny Sculptures Made From A Single Toothpick
12 mar 2013 11:37
Steven J. Backman, a San Francisco native, makes incredible tiny sculptures using only one toothpick, a straight edged razor blade and glue. It all began in elementary school when Steven made a Science project of DNA molecules from ordinary toothpicks and beans. While attending San Francisco State University in the fall of 1984, where Steven later received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Arts, he decided to design a San Francisco cable car for an art project using toothpicks and glue. This was one way in which he knew how to show his appreciation for these mobile historical landmarks. Shortly after, Steven established his toothpick art business named “Landmarks of San Francisco,” which he still presently operates. Steven’s motto, “The Essence of Patience,” truly exemplifies his drive and determination towards creating unique and unforgettable one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Steven feels that making these sculptures is as relaxing as lying on a secluded island at peace with himself and his surroundings. He is truly a perfectionist at heart and takes much pride in his toothpick sculptures.

Georgia Aquarium: The Largest Aquarium in the World
12 mar 2013 11:09
The world’s largest aquarium is located in Atlanta, Georgia. It houses more than 120,000 animals, representing 500 species in 8.5 million gallons of water. There are 60 different habitats with 12,000 square feet of viewing windows, and it cost $290 million to build. Georgia Aquarium was the result of the vision of one enterprising businessman Bernard Marcus, who dreamed of presenting Atlanta with an aquarium that would encourage both education and economic growth. Marcus was so inspired by aquariums that after visiting 56 of them in 13 countries with his wife, he donated $250 million toward what was to become Georgia Aquarium. Additional $40 million came in as corporate donations. The land was donated by the Coca Cola Company.

Unraveling Steel Ballerina Sculptures Symbolize Mortality
12 mar 2013 10:11
From a distance, these ballerina sculptures seem elegant and peaceful, a beautiful representation of a graceful dance form. However, upon closer investigation, the wire sculptures might actually send a shiver down your spine. Based in Johannesburg, artist Regardt van deer Meulen formed the figures out of steel as an illustration of the vulnerable human body. They stand larger than life as a visual contradiction between the energy and movement of a lively dancer compared to a disintegrating form that no longer breathes healthy life.

Liquid Drops Float Through Acoustic Levitation
12 mar 2013 09:53
At the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory, scientists have been experimenting with sound waves and pharmaceutical solutions, levitating soluble drops between two speakers facing each other. While their research has produced some visually fascinating results, it has also led to the discovery of a far more effective method for creating amorphous drugs, which happen to be the more desirable of two forms that pharmaceutical drugs can take.

50,000 Miles of Nomadic Life on a Train
12 mar 2013 09:30
Arizona-born photographer Mike Brodie first began taking pictures in 2004 when he found a Polaroid camera on the backseat of his friend's car and she gave it to him. Just a teenager at the time, Brodie was an adventure-seeker and he was fascinated with the train-hopping community. So, he took his camera and ventured towards the train tracks, jumping on the first train that passed by for a free ride to anywhere. He said, “I had a lot of curiosity about the world and wanted to go travel. It was an addiction. And photography turned out to be something that just happened naturally for me.” From that point, there was no looking back. Brodie spent the next few years riding trains and using his camera to photograph his experiences.

Phenomenal Brazilian Street Mural As Tall As A Skyscraper
11 mar 2013 12:52
Brazilian local artist Eduardo Kobra, has really raised the bar with his majestic tribute to Brazilian architect and innovator Oscar Niemeyer who sadly died at 104. Widely regarded as one of the greatest architects of his generation (he was known in the industry as ‘a sculptor of monuments’) he was the architect behind Palácio da Alvorada, Cathedral of Brasília, National Congress of Brazil & Niterói Contemporary Art Museum to name a few. Outside of his homeland, he even played a significant role in designing the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Aside from his buildings, his legacy has now taken a different form thanks for Kobra. His vibrant and modern mural of Oscar, towers 52 meters into the air, running along the side of skyscraper situtated in Paulista Avenue (one of Sao Paulo’s most compact and dense streets.). As you’re about to see from the photos, it’s gigantic and stands 16 meter wide. Due to its scale Korba has to enlist the help of 4 people into his team to finish the project off in time. the shapes and fragements of the portraits were inspired by Niemeyer’s very own architecutral style. It’s an innovative & visually stunning tribute to a man who was reknowned for exactly both those qualities. Photos by Alan Teixeira.
