Make your Own ‘Success Kid’
02 mar 2013 16:11
This is a timelapse video of the process involved in taking the “Success Kid” meme and turning it into a tiny sandstone statue. Don’t you want a tiny “success kid” you can keep in your pocket like a lucky rabbit foot? The tiny figurine is made by Shapeways, the same company who brought the F U Anteater to life. The meager cost for acquiring such a tiny bit of awesome? The little guy’s going for $17.99, to which we can only respond with a hearty:

Can You Name Every Viral Video and Meme In This Mash-Up?
02 mar 2013 15:13
Wow, that’s a lot of internet crammed into one video. I'll tell you what, if you can name every meme and viral video that this video references, I’ll give you a prize. Okay, I won’t give you a prize, but the company that made the video, Klick Health, just might. They’re giving away a trip, a MacBook Air or an iPad to the person with the most correct answers. You can finally get something back for all those hours you’ve wasted on YouTube. Congratulations!

Airport Pianist Plays the Internet’s Greatest Hits
02 mar 2013 15:11
There’s nothing like a good “Rick Roll” to improve your airport experience. Except for, you know, getting bumped up to first class free of charge. But let’s be realistic, that’s not going to happen. So here is a video of a pianist at Chicago’s O’Hare airport playing the best hits from the internet. ‘Never Gonna Give You Up,’ ‘Chocolate Rain,’ ‘Gangnam Style,’ and more. It’s almost as good as unlimited free in-flight cocktails (not really).

Ecce Mono Painter Sells Painting for $1,427
02 mar 2013 15:11
Much like the Overly Attached Girlfriend, Cecelia Gimenez, the lady who accidentally painted a Monkey Jesus this summer, is using her internet fame for good rather than evil. After selling an original painting on eBay, she plans to donate all $1,427 earned to charity. So there’s good news and bad news. The good news is $1,427 more has been raised for charity. The bad news is we live in a world where somebody will pay $1,427 for a painting by the Monkey Jesus lady. To be fair, it is somewhat better than her attempt to restore the Ecce Homo fresco in her church: And, just in case you don’t believe me, here are the final results of the auction:

Would You Pay $110 to Eat a Meal Made of Dirt?
01 mar 2013 21:52
In general, restaurants avoid dirt in their food, lest they raise the ire of paying customers and/or the health board. But a high-end restaurant in Japan is taking a different approach by serving a $110 full-course meal where dirt is actually the main ingredient. At Ne Quittez Pas, a Southern France-inspired restaurant in Tokyo, Chef Toshio Tanabe is offering a menu that includes potato starch and dirt soup, a salad with dirt dressing, sea bass with dirt risotto, dirt gratin, dirt ice cream and dirt mint tea. (What, no dirty martini to wash it down?) A fearless critic at RocketNews24 actually tried the pricey meal and found that it surprisingly didn’t taste like dirt. Instead, she described it as “divine,” “delicious” and at times “complex.” Sorry, but we’re still not convinced. After all, $110 is a lot to pay for dirt when there’s plenty already in our backyard. Check out some photos of the dirt-y meal below.

Mystery Creature Washes Ashore in Wales
01 mar 2013 21:40
Peter Bailey, 27, was taking his dog for her evening walk along the beach in Tenby, Wales, when he came across this unusual sight. He snapped some pictures of it, because he had no idea what it is, and now it has earned the name The Beast of Tenby. Bailey told the Western Telegraph, “Immediately I thought it was a horse, but it had claws like a bear and a body of a pig. Surprisingly, it didn’t smell.” Dr. Dan Forman, a professor at the Swansea University, told the Sun that its toes suggest it could be a badger. Now we are terrified of badgers. This isn’t the first time a bizarre creature has washed up on shore in recent months. Back in July, there was the case of the “Montauk Monster,” a dog-like beast that turned up on shore in Long Island. What do you think the Beast of Tenby could be? Are you afraid to go in the water? Get a closer look below.

Colorful Examples of Yarn Bombing
01 mar 2013 07:30
Nowadays knitting can hardly be called a grandma’s hobby. Since 2004, it’s been developing into a new street art phenomenon – yarn bombing (or yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting, graffiti knitting and even grandma graffiti). It employs colorful knitted and crocheted yarn or fiber on different displays, such as hydrants, lampposts, mailboxes, bicycles, cars or any other ordinary urban objects. Though these yarn bombs (or yarnstorms) may last for years, they are considered non-permanent and technically illegal.

Interactive Installations from Sharp Cracks of Light
01 mar 2013 07:23
Oakland-based artist Chris Fraser has created an impressive set of sight-specific installations that all consist of sharp cracks of light. He strategically creates holes or slits in walls, coaxing light into various formations. His works are often interactive, providing the viewer with a memorable and unique experience. In the Make has a great interview with Fraser where he describes his creative process and what he hopes to accomplish as an artist. "I would like my work to point back into the world. I spend a lot of time crafting specific situations, framing light in such a way that it reveals a portion of the complex order within the ambient environment. But there is nothing particularly special about the light that enters these works. Echoes of this same order can be found in your home, entering your windows, skirting around furniture, slipping through a crack in the door. I want to call attention to a type of beauty that usually goes unnoticed."

Concrete Charm in the Rain by Christophe Jacrot
01 mar 2013 06:44
Photographer Christophe Jacrot says “there are two ways of capturing the world for a photographer; on the one hand grasping its horror, and on the other sublimating it.” Christophe chooses the second option and takes pictures in rainy, snowy or otherwise bad weather as it “awakens a feeling of romantic fiction“, reserving the glimpse of the world through the photo-camera’s lens in an imposing and noble way. Capturing cities in rain might unveil a whole new urban perspective to most of us, as generally we try to hurry and hide away from it, without paying much attention to what the world looks like in bad weather. “This universe escapes most of us, since we are too occupied getting undercover. Man becomes a ghostly silhouette wandering and obeying the hazards of rain or of snow, into the eternity of the climate,” – says Christophe. Christophe Jacrot’s artistic target is mostly various cities. And the background or the surrounding aura, so to say, is always the same – nature’s elements in action. The photographer has traveled the world to unveil the beauty of the biggest concrete cities, such as New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong,Paris, etc. Here you can admire the assorted pictures from Jacrot’s portfolio in the rain.

Majestic Waterfall Paintings Evoke Sense of Calm
01 mar 2013 06:19
Japanese painter Hiroshi Senju makes large scale paintings of waterfalls using interesting materials and an age old technique. His method involves creating paints by grinding mineral pigments from natural materials like stone, shell and corals into powder, binding them with animal-hide glue, and then, with extreme delicacy, pouring this paint onto Japanese mulberry paper. This approach takes from the thousand-year-old Nihonga style of painting, which emphasizes natural materials.

Electric Blossom: An Ethereal Distortion of Nature
01 mar 2013 04:12
New York-based fashion photographer Torkil Gudnason is known for his ability to blur the line between fashion and art. He believes that editorial work "is a process of attrition: if the image outlives its commercial purpose (and what is fashion if not fleeting) then all that is left, for better or worse, is the art." Along with his extensive fashion portfolio, the talented photographer also explores personal projects as an outlet from his many commercial assignments.
