Cambodian Fried Spiders

Fried spider is a regional delicacy in Cambodia. In the Cambodian town of Skuon (Cheung Prey, Kampong Cham Province), the vending of fried spiders as a specialty snack is a popular attraction for tourists passing through this town. The spiders are bred in holes in the ground in villages north of Skuon, or foraged for in nearby forestland, and fried in oil. It is not clear how this practice started, but some have suggested that the population might have started eating spiders out of desperation during the years of Khmer Rouge rule, when food was in short supply.

Seth MacFarlane Oscar Song About Boobs: Everyone Was Offended

We know it’s been a few hours since you’ve seen this, so you’re probably jonesing pretty bad for Seth MacFarlanes ‘We Saw Your Boobs’ song he performed at the Oscars last night. Here it is, a big giant list of the times he’s seen actresses topless onscreen. And the actresses were kind enough to provide hilarious reaction shots. (Some of them. Obviously not Meryl Streep.) The song, and Seth MacFarlane’s entire hosting gig in general, has already proven controversial. Perhaps it’s not the most highbrow humor, but at least he didn’t talk about poo. Or perform it in his Quagmire voice.

Jimmy Kimmel Enlists Tons of Stars for ‘Movie: The Movie: 2V’

After last year’s Academy Award ceremonies, Jimmy Kimmel introduced us to ‘Movie: The Movie,’ a faux film trailer now holding over 20 million views. And last night, with the 2013 ceremonies freshly in our rearview, the host did it again with ‘Movie: The Movie: 2V.’ Starring the likes of John Krasinski, Gerard Butler, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Chastain, Kerry Washington and even Bruno Mars, ‘Movie: The Movie: 2V’ features an elite team of stereotypes who agree to take on a plague of sexy vampires and zombies. And as the trailer states, “The only way to fight sexy is with sexy,” which is why Hollywood’s leading stud, Channing Tatum, also made an appearance. And of course, we can’t forget about Matt Damon, uh, “eating that sandwich.” (If you know Kimmel’s running feud with Damon, you can imagine where this is going…) So be on the look out this coming Arbor Day for ‘Movie: The Movie: 2V.’

Unfortunate Tattoo Spelling Fails

Veggie 26 feb 2013

We all know tattoos are permanent, right? Right. That’s why it sometimes makes us wonder why people choose to stick a sloth or an ‘Aladdin’ dog on their body. But hey– whatever floats your inking boat. Unfortunately, there are times when tattoos turn out awful for one very easily preventable reason– the spelling is totally wrong. Yikes. You’d think someone would catch grammar mistakes before tatting a permanent message on someone’s body, but luckily for us, that’s a big nope. While these folks do have to live with the spelling error for like, ever, at least it’s funny! For us. See what I mean below:

Minimalist Illustrated Quotation Posters by Ryan McArthur

I’ve always found comfort in little witty one liners because most tap into one commonality that we all share… human nature. I really wanted to find quotations and snippets from my favorite books that not only provided a great visual to play off of, but that speak to life in general. I illustrate them all by hand using pen and ink and then digitally render them.

Street art, perhaps contrary to popular belief, isn’t about vandalizing buildings – it’s about self expression, and getting a message out to the world that can often be thoughtful and provoking. It can take on many forms: rather than being limited to paintings, it can work its magic in such mediums as yarn bombing, lego, and even ice sculptures. Here are some good examples of what the best street artists can do:

Symbolic Sculptures of Men Shielding Each Other's Eyes

Karma is an intriguing sculptural installation by Korean artist Do Ho Suh that presents countless men sitting atop one another while shielding each other's eyes. Like his Cause & Effect piece, which features a spectacular tornado of figurines, Karma presents figurative sculptures ascending into the sky like a human ladder. However, in addition to being perched on each other's shoulders, they are successively blinding one another which leads one to wonder: Why?

Vibrant Paint Spills Suspended in Mid-Air

Based in LA, Malanie Rothschild is a self-taught artist who once spilled a gallon of paint all over the floor. She decided to let the paint dry and, as she peeled the dried pieces up days later, she discovered a magnificent new creation that instantly inspired her as an artist. She discovered that this simple mistake of spilling paint was, in and of itself, a painting without the canvas. The creation existed solely as paint and the air around it that transformed it from solid to liquid. And thus, a project was born.
