Pictures Of Marine Drill Instructors Screaming In People's Faces Read
13 feb 2013 04:50
Every small-town tough guy thinks he'd never take treatment like this. Then when they get down to Parris Island, that small-town tough guy quickly realizes: You will take treatment like this and like it. Welcome to a behind-the-scenes look at Marine Corps recruit training. Drill Instructors are the thing of legend — I remember, when they finally let us sleep for the first time, about 50 truly harrowing hours from the time we arrived, and those lights shut out, each of us in our racks, I heard a decent handful of grown men crying for their mothers. I'm not even joking.

Breathtaking Parkour!
12 feb 2013 21:15

Parkour is known as "the art of displacement" and hails from France. It's a training discipline that developed based on military obstacle course training. It became popular among young people, men especially in the 1990's and 2000's. The goal behind this is to be able to have total control of your body in the air as well as ground, moving efficiently and smoothly through a variety of obstacles. Parkour practitioners seem to defy gravity with the incredible movements and jumps they perform. It's breathtaking to watch!

Bolivia's Road of Death
12 feb 2013 17:00

Bolivia's road to death is a 80-90 km pathway from La Paz (the peace) to Coroico.

Once a dangerous dirt road, the "road to death" is now a paved stretch, still dangerous because of the jungles and steep edges.

Yes, you can drive on this pathway, and curiously enough, most people prefer to drive it at night because at least that way they can see the lights coming!

10 Popes Who Resigned
12 feb 2013 11:11
Pope Benedict XVI yesterday announced his resignation as 266th Pope. What may be surprising to many is that history is not without its fair-share of popes who resigned. This list looks at ten of them. They all resigned for different reasons (some good—some bad) but they serve to show that there is, indeed, a precent for this surprising act, and—most surprisingly—a number of these resigning popes ended up becoming saints.

How Snakeskin Handbags Are Made
12 feb 2013 10:54
Images from a snake slaughterhouse at Kapetakan village in Indonesia’s West Java province. Wakira, who is known as “Boss Cobra”, owns the slaughterhouse that produces snake meat and skin. Snake meat is believed by some to be a remedy for skin diseases and asthma, as well as an aid to increase virility. The snake skins, measuring in the hundreds of metres, are sold to bag factories in the West and Central Java provinces on a monthly basis. The price of a bag made from snake skin costs between 150,000 rupiah ($ 15.60) and 300,000 rupiah ($31.20), depending on its size. That snakeskin handbag you’ll buy is costing a hell of a lot more.

Gorgeous Spiraling Staircase Mimics a Whale's Spine
12 feb 2013 09:04
Not your typical spiral staircase, this organic form is a concept by artist and architect Andrew McConnell. The piece, entitled the Vertebrae Staircase, is based off of the spine of a whale. According to the artist's website, the project "is not simply mimicry of organic form but an exploration in shaping structure. Much of the design work went into refining the single component, or vertebra, that mate with each other creating a unified spine running from floor plate to floor plate."

Shape-Shifting GIFs of Fine Art Sculptures
12 feb 2013 09:01
Tumblr user hateplow has created a series of GIFs that shift back and forth between figurative sculptures and pixelated abstractions. The glitchy animated images present an intriguing perspective of art. They're hypnotizing in their constant shape-shifting motion, but they also showcase the different forms one work of art can take. Any given piece is a chosen form of interpretation out of a wide spectrum of possible renditions, revealing the artist's option to either replicate a figure exactly, add geometric ridges, or blur the creation entirely.

Flexible Paper Sculptures by Li Hongbo
12 feb 2013 08:56
Li Hongbo’s artwork may look like porcelain or gypsum sculptures at first, but that’s only until he demonstrates how flexible they are. Beijing based artist, book designer and editor creates these busts and sculptures out of thousands of layers of glued thin paper. Hongbo builds the honeycomb-like structures by strategically placing the glue on each sheet of paper, and then gives the desired shape to it.

9 Years on Mars
12 feb 2013 07:45
NASA's Mars rover Opportunity just celebrated its ninth anniversary on Mars - a mission that was originally meant to last just 90 days. Although recently eclipsed in the news by its bigger brother Curiosity, Opportunity is still going strong and making valuable scientific discoveries. Launched into space in 2003, Opportunity bounced to a hole-in-one landing in a small crater on Mars' Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004. It has since spent 3,212 Martian days, or sols, on the surface, slowly moving from target to target, exploring craters, meteorites, unusual rock formations, and finding evidence of past water activity. Over the past 108 months, Opportunity has driven a total of 35.48 kilometers (22.05 miles) across Mars -- not bad for a mission designed to last only three months.
