Voodoo Festival
18 jan 2013 06:18
The deified residents of the Temple of Pythons, when released to find food, sometimes slither across the road into a Catholic church that once hosted Pope Benedict XVI. The local priest, the snake handlers say, is always good enough to call or bring the gorging reptiles back to their own spiritual home. This is life in Ouidah, a mecca of spirits and gods worshipped by practitioners of Voodoo, a recognized religion in this former French colony in West Africa that is home to 9 million people. The religion has its own pope -- or two, depending on who you ask -- whose reign dates back to the 1400s and can be seen about town in his SUV. This past Thursday, local banks and the post office closed as the town celebrated its annual Voodoo Festival, an event increasingly drawing curious foreigners. With its mix of beliefs and traditions, the Voodoo practiced here shows both a clash of cultures and the ability for ancient traditional beliefs to adapt to modern life. Jean Zossoujbo, a guide at the Temple of Pythons, shows a python to a visitor to the temple in Ouidah, Benin, on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013. Young Girl Who's Best Friends with African Wildlife
18 jan 2013 06:09
Born in Africa to French wildlife photographer parents, Tippi Degré had a most unusual childhood. The young girl grew up in the African desert and developed an uncommon bond with many untamed animals including a 28-year old African elephant named Abu, a leopard nicknamed J&B, lion cubs, giraffes, an Ostrich, a mongoose, crocodiles, a baby zebra, a cheetah, giant bullfrogs, and even a snake. Africa was her home for many years and Tippi became friends with the ferocious animals and tribespeople of Namibia. As a young child, the French girl said, “I don’t have friends here. Because I never see children. So the animals are my friends."

Tailless Scorpions
18 jan 2013 06:03
Amblypygi is an order of invertebrate animals belonging to the class Arachnida, in the subphylum Chelicerata of the phylum Arthropoda. They form a separate order of arachnids alongside the spiders, scorpions and others. Native to New Zealand and Australasia. Amblypygids are also known as whip spiders and tailless whip scorpions (not to be confused with whip scorpions that belong to the Arachnid order Thelyphonida). The name "amblypygid" means "blunt rump", a reference to a lack of the telson ("tail") carried by related species. Despite an offputting appearance, they are harmless to humans.

1,000 Beautiful Bioluminescent Leaves Radiate at Night
18 jan 2013 00:25
Using her own resin and non-toxic phosphorescence concoction, artist Miya Ando has coated 1,000 leaves and set them afloat in a pond in Puerto Rico. We've seen bioluminescent bodies of water radiating a brilliant sapphire hue against the night sky in the past, but Ando takes this natural occurrence and manually transfers the luminous beauty of bioluminescence in her public art project titled Obon [Puerto Rico]. During the day, the leaves' layered skin absorbs sunlight energy, which translates at night into a gorgeous path of drifting blue lights.

Surreal Dreamers Wandering on Public Streets
18 jan 2013 00:22
Surreal Streets is a series by French photographer Julie de Waroquier that explores the way the modern dreamer's private aspirations merge with the unforgiving reality of public streets. Anonymity becomes more and more a distant part of history with each passing day as people are expected to share themselves and their goals on public grounds. The photographer says, "In our society, our private and personal identities are built in public spaces, especially in the streets, theatres of our lives… I [want] to show how someone can build his/her inner identity in a world in which almost everything is public."

Chinese Factory Workers Reveal the REAL Toy Story
18 jan 2013 00:18
Most people rarely ever think about the laborers who put hours of work into making items that are so readily found in bulk, but photographer Michael Wolf offers some insight into the reality of where toys are made in his series titled The Real Toy Story. The project gives a whole new perspective to those dolls and action figures consumers purchase at any given store by revealing the countless Chinese factory workers slaving away in stuffy environments to construct piles of plastic toys.

Korean photographer Ahn Jun's Self-Portrait project features the dainty photographer on the ledge of some dangerously imposing buildings. We've seen our fair share of daredevils dangling off the ledge of towering structures, but there's something darker about Ahn's photography.
