Ancient Roman Coins with Sex Scenes
21 jan 2013 10:10
This is a spintria. They were used in ancient Rome to request and pay for different “services” in brothels and from prostitutes on the street. Since there were a lot of foreigners coming to the city that did not speak the language and most of the prostitutes were slaves captured from other places the coins made the transactions easy and efficient. One side of these coins showed what the buyer wanted and the other showed the amount of money to be paid for the act.

Dizzying Building by Stefano Skarselli
21 jan 2013 10:12
Italian photographer Stefano Scarselli, a. k. a. Nespyxel, has captured lots of amazing things during his career. Most of all he liked houses with courtyards (like the famous Batlló built by Antonio Gaudi for the Spanish magnate Josep Batlló y Casanovas) and unusual staircases. Only a couple of dozen of pictures by this photographer can be attributed to the subject, because of the rarity of objects.

Sunny Photographs

Alexa Singer is a fashion, lifestyle and beauty photographer, based in Cape Town, where she has family and dogs, and commutes all over for work. Her work is diverse as she loves imagery in general. She has recently gone into moving imagery with the help of the 5d, which has made movie making affordable for everyone. She tries to bring some sort of realness and emotion to what she does, and although she greatly admires the wonderful world of post, prefers images in their truer form. When she travels, she takes reportage shots for pleasure.

Frighteningly Realistic Animal Chairs by Maximo Riera
21 jan 2013 11:02
Are you looking for a new set of chairs? Then take a look at this almost alive Animal Chair collection by Máximo Riera. The collection constitutes a diverse range of species, including octopus, walrus and rhino. Each chair retains the animal’s natural vitality whilst being totally biologically accurate in their appearance. It is homage to these animals and the whole animal kingdom which inhabits our planet, as an attempt to reflect and capture the beauty of nature in each living thing. The main reason Maximo Riera chose to create a chair is because it is an everyday object, something taken as common and banal in our lives. “Whilst considering the chair’s basic functionality, I also wanted to bring it alive, make it more present and create a stronger link between the spectator, the piece and the surrounding space,” says the artist.

Defrosting a Frozen Building
21 jan 2013 11:03
This cold storage facility in Chicago may not draw your attention from the outside, but had you entered the building a few months ago, you’d be surprised to see what was inside. After nine decades of cold storage and lack of proper maintenance, the whole interior was full of cave-like stalagmites and stalactites. Once the Fulton Market Cold Storage Company, which was renting the premises, decided to move out, it was sold to a bike component manufacturer SRAM. However, in order to use their new space, SRAM had to defrost the building first. Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture were hired do the work, however, such sight couldn’t go unarchived. This is why photographer Gary Jensen was asked to photograph this indoor ice age phenomena. The video at the end of the article shows the defrosting process, where you see the team using propane heaters to dissolve the ice crystals.

Historic Church Transformed with Graffiti Art by Hense
21 jan 2013 11:04
Amazing things happen when architecture and art meet halfway! Atlanta-based artist Hense chose a historic church from this area as his canvas and painted it in vibrant flashy colors. The church became a multi-angled mural of abstract figures and dynamic shades. The church’s walls were covered in graffiti like concrete buildings that you pass by almost everyday. The only difference here is that Hence’s project has absolutely no issues with the law. The exterior of the church changed completely, every surface and every little corner got a new bold look. Hense says that “Taking an existing object like the church and painting the entire thing re-contextualizes it and makes it a sculptural object. With projects like this one, we really try to use the existing architecture as inspiration for the direction of the painting.” Looks like this time the art/architecture collision in a form of the street art embodies a fine art work.

Abandoned Building Photography by Maša Kores
21 jan 2013 11:05
Maša Kores is a singular girl. She lives in Slovenia, a small country wedged between Italy and Croatia on the Adriatic coast. She likes taking photographs. Her subject matter may not appeal to many, but for her, abandoned building hold the same beauty as a perfect sunset. Her penchant for derelict buildings started 5 years ago when true to form she was off exploring and came across and old abandoned hotel in a woods. It was very creepy, but curiosity took over and she entered, flitting from room to room past decaying beds, wardrobes, cupboards and carpets. It was the combination of excitement and being scared that did it for her. She discovered great beauty in the way nature had taken over these places, turned a man made structure back into something more organic. Each different, unique and enchanting to her, telling tales of their past. From then on she was hooked and now travels throughout Europe looking for that perfect building, an undiscovered gem waiting to be uncovered. Now, of course, she has better equipment than that first cheapo compact camera. What’s next for Maša Kores? She has her 1st solo exhibition in Ljubljana (from 9.1.2013 till 8.2.2013). She also wants to meet the others who share her interest, new guides to show her unseen treasures before they are lost to the developers or vandals. One thing is for sure, you will always find her looking for new discoveries!

A Sandy Red Haze Consumes Sydney, Australia
21 jan 2013 11:56
Sandstorms are rare and natural occurrences that develop when gusts of wind collect loose sand and dirt from dry land. Back in 2009, one of these natural phenomena took place in an unpredictable location: Sydney, Australia. Fairly quickly, the unsuspecting city was consumed by a yellowish-red sea of sand that filled the air in a magical glow.
