Simply Beautiful Floral Skulls Stitched From Leather
11 feb 2013 11:09
Jacky Tasi is already a house-hold name in the UK, best know for designing the timeless floral skull pattern for fashion icon Alexander McQueen. But he’s not rested on his laurels, he’s kept creating, adapting and formulating new ideas around the concept itself. His latest project sees him slicing flower petals out of leather and stitching them together to create these quite magnificent floral skull sculptures. The biggest of all stands an impressive 5ft tall and took 300 days (and countless long nights) to piece together – requiring the work and patience of 15 needlesmiths. But we think the end result utterly justifies the amount of time and work his team put in, they are astounding pieces of work. He’s also created an expanded series titled Floral Skullptures whereby each skull is custom designed with a unique colour pattern and theme, we’ve decided to feature a few of those below as well.

The Inventive Case Of The Disappearing Package
11 feb 2013 11:08
Here’s an alarming statistic. The EPA (Environment Protection Agency) has revealed that we throw away an eye-watering 70,000,000 tonnes of packaging each year and in fact the numbers keep rising year on year. Do you really need a pair of headphones vacumn-sealed in more plastic or an entire box with fold out wings to house a small USB key? Probably not. But it’s not down to the consumer to reduce waste, they’re just buying the product – it’s down to the designers, the creators of that packaging to start thinking smarter to help reduce that 70 million tonnes of landfill. Graphic designer Aaron Mickelson was asked a simple yet poingnat question “Can we eliminate that waste entirely? “ He took that concept applying the functions of packaging to the product itself, we can create a package that has completely disappeared by the time you’re done using the product.

superman rebranded animated gif
11 feb 2013 11:05

Out of all the worlds superheroes, comic book villains and TV show characters, one if not THE most recognisable is Superman. But you’re about to see him portrayed in a way you never have before….. And yes, whilst Captain America is supposed to represent Uncle Sam, everyone secretly understands that Superman is actually the one capable of saving the planet – not just a country. The buff torso, the slick hair and that confident grin – all trademarks of a man who knows what he’s doing. (Although we’re still not overly sold on the red cape.) Which is why we’re big fans of the latest project from visual artist, Mike Mitchell. He gives our famous man in red boots, a revamped waredrobe and aesthetic. Taking that all American charm and mashing it up with the bodies, outfits and gadgets from other pop culture characters throughout history.

Elegant Animal Sculptures Made From Broken Glass
11 feb 2013 11:02
You’ve rarely seen animals so elegantly recreated as those by Polish sculptor Marta Klonowska. From across the room, her creations look like little furry transparent animals, but upon closer inspection you’ll see that they are painstakingly created from individual shards of broken glass. She creates the outline of the animal using dense metal frames covered in wire mesh, it’s into this mesh that she then slots and places each individual shard of glass. The net effect is a magnificent combination of beauty, poise and finesse – themes which run through all her work.

Infinite Building blocks!
11 feb 2013 10:58
After a successful launch last year on Kickstarter, the "drinking straw construction game," Linx, is finally available for purchase. The minimalistic and sustainably-made connectors consist of flat four-sided stars that fit into the ends of standard drinking straws, allowing gamers to build infinite plastic structures. The easily manipulated Linx connector points can be bent in all directions, allowing the user—regardless of age or tactile skill level—to make both geometric shapes and free-form patterns. From airy constructions the size of an entire room to small desktop sculptures, the possibilities are endless, and the stars are as lightweight and harmless as the straws themselves. Made out of 100% post-consumer plastic, Linx are shipped in flat, modular grids, making it almost an entirely zero-waste form of entertainment.

Kawazu-Nanadaru Loop Bridge, Japan
11 feb 2013 10:41
How do you build a bridge on a mountainside when the grade is so steep that a linear ramp isn’t possible? Build a loop, and if one is not enough, build two. This is what engineers did when the built the Kawazu-Nanadaru Loop Bridge, also known as the Japanese Double loop spiral, in Kawazu, Japan. This double spiral brings cars up and down a full 45 meters while being seemingly suspended in a valley between two mountainsides. The spirals measure 80m in diameter and the whole ramp section is 1.1km long. The bridge on Highway 414 between Tokyo and the Izu peninsular was finished in 1982 and has become a well known landmark since.

Incredible Photos of Sharks and Dolphins Preying on Mackerel
11 feb 2013 10:38
British Wildlife photographer Christopher Swann swam in the midst of this frenetic battle of life and death to capture this images off the coast of the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean. Thousands of mackerel swam into a huge shimmering ball 30 feet in diameter to protect themselves from the predatory onslaught of dolphins and sharks. But as the shoal flees from deeper waters towards the surface, clusters of Cory's shearwaters begin to dive-bomb them from above. Left with no escape, the blue jack mackerel have little choice but to wait until the pod of short-beaked common dolphins have had their fill.

Now the worst excesses of snowstorm Nemo have descended, the fun can begin. The blizzard caused havoc by dropping up to three feet of snow on the north-eastern U.S. But the recovery has now started in earnest. Many residents are releasing their tension through snowball fights and playing in the powder. Across the region, families and friends threw snow at each other, went sledding and built igloos. There is plenty of the white stuff remaining. On Sunday, some residents were just starting to dig themselves out of their inundated homes. And there is still a long way to go to return to normality.
