It Was Because of Bullying
11 jan 2013 11:02
Science teacher Ryan Heber is the hero of Taft Union High School in California. Mr. Heber confronted the angry teenager after having shot & wounded his classmate and long time bully. It is because of this conversation that the 16 year old put down the gun and surrendered, allowing 28 other students to escape what could have been another American massacre. "I don't want to shoot you," the teen gunman told Heber, who then proceded to convince the youngster to put down the high powered shot gun. Besides the bully who is now undergoing surgery, two other students received minor injuries. One suffered hearing loss and the other fell over a table during the rushed evacuation. Police say that the teen, whose name has not been made public because he is a minor, began plotting on Wednesday night to kill two students he felt had bullied him.

The Chromatic Typewriter
11 jan 2013 09:01
Washington-based artist Tyree Callahan transformed and old 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter into a functional painting device he calls a Chromatic Typewriter. He did it by replacing the ink pads of the typewriter with colored paint pads and the letters with color markers. “I’m super excited about it. The reaction to the piece has been pretty special. It seems to be making a lot of people happy and it has started some great discussions on the translation of art into words and words into art. And folks with synesthesia seem to like it the most, “ says Callahan.

Fighting Protesters With Colored Water
11 jan 2013 08:34
You must have seen photos of protesters being doused with colored-water cannons by the police. Using water canon is understood as it’s an easy non-hazardous way to disperse mob, but why would police spray protesters with purple and pink water? Simple: to identify and arrest them later. Many water cannons on the market today come with a tank specially designed to store a semi-permanent colored dye. If police decide they want to "tag" protesters with the dye, they can press a button to inject it into the main water stream. Once the water cannon is trained on a crowd, anyone hit by the spray will be easily recognizable by police.

One day, I was caught inside by a big wave and as I dove underwater I suddenly thought I’d see what the kids next to me were going through – I turned the camera on them. That first image remains one of my strongest – I realised immediately that it was close to what I had been looking for ten years ago on my first surfing road trip.”
