This is how the Japanese stay warm in the winter, or how you can stay in bed all day! The kotatsu consists of a blanket placed between a low table-frame and table-top, with a heat source placed underneath the blanket. With your legs placed under the blanket, someone wearing traditional Japanese clothing would have warm air come through the bottom of their robes and exit around the neck, heating the whole body.

Japanese tattoos are just plain beautiful. The Japanese are already artistic people in their own right, which makes sense why the tattoos that bear their style are the same way. The thing I like most about Japanese tattoos is that they can portray a story with a few simple visuals, pure brilliance. With a mix of beautiful color and delicate lines, these tattoos are magnificent. I hope you like what I found, I know I did.

Boyan Slat, a 20-year-old innovator in the Netherlands, has a lot on his plate – he’s set out to do nothing less than rid the oceans of the millions of tons of plastic garbage that circle along their currents. Slat envisions long-distance arrays of floats that would skim garbage from the...

This Star Wars snow sculpture was created by Japan's army troopers, or the 11th Brigade of the Ground Self-Defense Forces, using a set of bulldozers. For almost a month, the army moved 3,500 tons of snow to create this enormous, 23 meter wide, 15 meter tall piece of art.

This blue pond in Hokkaido, Japan, changes colors depending on the weather. For example, in spring it turns into spectacularly green color. The artificial pond was created as a part of erosion control system that was built to prevent Biei in case of an eruption of Mount Tokachidake. This pond is blue because of aluminum hydroxide.

For people living in Japan, the arrival of spring signifies one more thing: the beginning of cherry blossom season. The folks at Torafu Architects realized that art appreciation is just too boring for today’s youth, so they decided to make it more interesting. Did I say interesting because I meant terrifying. They created a haunted art gallery exhibit for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo. The exhibit features replicas of fine art that are not quite right. Like the eyes in some paintings move and Mona Lisa’s got hands coming out of her face. Scary stuff. Although slightly less scary when you enter a secret passageway that lets you manipulate the artwork yourself from behind.

With the pending release of the awesome looking 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves I figured that I'd mention a man who has influenced numerous works and helped greatly to popularize the Samurai genre and without which we wouldn't have been able to enjoy this upcoming samurai movie or many others for that matter. The name of that man is none other than the Great Akira Kurosawa, I would give you a rundown of all the things that he has influenced but there are too many different movies, actors, directors, writers and otherwise for me list or even to care to list. What I would like to point out is that he is someone that has existed in the background of our movie culture since the 1940s and has influenced so many things, like some the most famous and popular westerns; A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, all based off of the style of his films and off of his character from the movie Yojimbo. Not to mention one of the most popular and well regarded movies of all time the Seven Samurai. People don't give Kurosawa is fare due and I hope that this post does something to ameliorate that.
