Stephanie Law finds magic in the mundane, bridging the botanical and fantastical in her watercolors. “Mythology has always drawn me in,” she says, “And I’m not alone in that. The oral traditions of myth had perpetuated through the ages because at the core of these stories are vital bits of humanity. They are pieces that resonate with me, and they inspire me to try to create visual reflections that I can hopefully share and create resonance with my viewers.”

The Protectors Of Iceland
02 feb 2015 10:49

Ásgeir Jón Ásgeirsson did these paintings for the album “Með Vættum” by the Icelandic metal band Skálmöld. The inspiration comes partly from Heimskringla, an Icelandic Saga, but also from the amazing lyrics written by Snæbjörn Ragnarsson. The album tells the story of an unknown heroine who grows up with the wights (mythical creatures), protecting the land from harm.

25 Mind-Twisting Optical Illusion Paintings By Rob Gonsalves
20 jan 2015 09:07

The beautiful and mind-bending illusions in Canadian artist Robert Gonsalves’ paintings have a fun way of twisting your perception and causing you to question what in his paintings, if anything, is real. Most of his stunning paintings have an unclear boundary between the multiple stories they tell, which forces the viewer to jump back and forth between them – like an optical illusion that changes every time you look at it. Gonsalves’ interest in art began at an early age, which is why he...

An Artist Makes Incredibly Realistic Portraits By Using Only Thread
03 dec 2014 10:34

If embroidery makes you think of samplers full of minute flowers and sweet sayings, think again. (Not that there's anything wrong with those--I love embroidery samplers.) But embroidery, that traditionally tame craft of proper ladies, gets an intense, artistic update thanks to artist Cayce Zavaglia. Trained as a painter, she developed a way to use embroidery to create portraits of her friends, family and fellow artists that have surprising depth and detail, and are incredibly lifelike.

Miley Cyrus Twerking On Famous Paintings
09 sep 2013 11:56

In Things That Will Make You Go :/ or actually Things That Will Make You Go :P because she can’t keep her tongue in her mouth (is it ’cause weak teeth? faulty lips?), here’s Miley Cyrus twerking on famous paintings. The series was put together by Buzzfeed staffer Jen Lewis. To be honest, I really struggled with this one. I mean, I didn’t want to have to show you this mess. But you know what? I had to see it, so now you do too. Thems the rules! The rules I just made up in my head. Totally legit.

Hyper Realistic Paintings by Simon Hennessey
02 sep 2013 10:38

Simon Hennessey is a Birmingham, UK based artist who paints realistic images of famous landmarks around the world as reflected in the lenses of a pair of sunglasses. Like most hyper-realistic painters, Hennessey’s process starts with the camera. But instead of simply copying the photograph, the artist proceeds to add or remove details, depth, add textures, form and color values, thereby creating an illusion of a reality not seen in any photographic source. “My Paintings therefore appear clearer and more distinct than a photograph. constructing my own interpretations of a reality results in blurring the boundaries of what is real and what is made up,” said Simon Hennessey. “I use the camera only as a source to assist me with gathering information.”

Impressive Portrait Of Yao Ming Painted Using A Basketball
22 aug 2013 12:02

If you haven’t already guessed, we’re big fans of portrait art here on SBSG, but we have to admit it’s not every day you see artwork painted using merely a basketball! But that’s precisely the tool Malaysian artist Hong Yi used to create her portrayal of Chinese basketball player Yao Ming. Below is a time-lapse video of her bouncing the ball and bringing her creation to life using nothing more than red paint. Quite how she achieved such an impressive feat is still somewhat of a mystery, but then again that’s half the fun isn’t it? In her own words “I love to paint, but not with a paintbrush.”, she’s true to her word too. You can see the full range of her artistic experiments via redhongyi.com, there’s not a brush in sight.

Kelly Cox-Brady
19 aug 2013 12:38

Local to Ithaca New York, Kelly Cox-Brady is creating a horticultural landscape with a paint brush. Her paintings are very much like her personality, bright, bubbly, big, with a earthly center and a realistic personality. Studying landscape design, Kelly thought she would be taking her green thumb to make plants grow. Somehow along the way of life she grew Black Eye Susans (flowers) to over 10 feet tall in her Botanical Mural in Ithaca. Quoted in Garden Designs, Kelly talks about how her education combines her passion for art. "One interesting aspect of painting botanical murals is the attention to detail that is required. Since my subjects are larger than life, many details become obvious that are easily overlooked on the actual plant. It is almost like putting a specimen under a microscope, but instead I’m painting them on walls. This is where my education in plant science comes in handy. I make sure the veins, stems and petals are all scientifically accurate." Don't you love it when science and art combine together!
