Undoubtedly compelling, this piece has been constructed with the same precision as any modern gadget, but without all of the flash- what you see above is fact a sculpture made from a relic of our technological past: the typewriter. Jeremy Mayer has made an art of disassembling all kinds of typewriters and reassembling them into the organic forms, resembling humans and animals.

Model of a Virginia Dining Room, c. 1800
05 apr 2013 10:47

In a special wing at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in the Phoenix Art Museum, are several exhibits of incredibly detailed miniature rooms. Painstakingly constructed on a scale of one inch to one foot, these rooms faithfully depict the architecture and interior design of actual rooms found in the United States, Asia and Europe during the late 13th century to the early 20th century. The rooms were conceived, designed, and in large part created by Narcissa Niblack Thorne (1882-1966). An Indiana native, Thorne began to collect miniature furniture and household accessories during her travels to Europe and the Far East. Impressed with the period rooms she encountered in major museums, beginning in 1930, Thorne began commissioning master craftsmen and artisans to build interiors to hold her growing collection of miniature objects. Many of the rooms even contain period-style rugs Thorne had woven specifically for each space.

In southern Spain, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, between the Atlantic in the west and the Mediterranean in the east, lies some of the prettiest towns in Spain - perfectly whitewashed with red and brown tiled roofs, narrow, winding, cobblestone streets, and ornate churches atop cliffs and river gorges, and all offering rolling views of the hills below. These are the famous ‘White Towns of Andalusia’, or Pueblos Blancos. The towns are located the northern part of the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga in southern Spain, mostly within the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

12 Popular Websites & Apps Brilliantly Redesigned
05 apr 2013 13:07
One of the cornerstones of graphic design and UX (user experience) is the ability to constantly evolve, de-clutter and streamline a design. There are exceptions likes Craigslist / FARk that will always remain the same for the sheer novelty and retro factor, but by and large brands, logos and websites get reimagined and reinvented constantly. It doesn’t always goes to plan (remember what happened to Digg?) but most brands get it right. We all know the biggest website in the world, Facebook, continuously changes its features, design and layout. As our needs, requirements, perceptions and expectations shift, brands have to adapt. Today we thought we’d show you 12 popular websites and apps that have been utterly reworked, tweaked and reimagined by 12 individual, masterful and visionary designers. We should note that sadly these are only concepts, but personally, we wish a few of them would actually get commissioned and turned into reality. Do let us know which ones impressed you the most, for us they are all a major improvement on their real-life counterparts.

Haunting & Evocative Photos Of Dogs Left Abandoned In Cars
05 apr 2013 13:08
It all began when Martin Usborne, a British photo journalist, started to do some reporting on individuals who leave their pet dogs locked up inside their respective cars and vans. But his initial investigation turned into the poignant photographic series he’s called ‘The Silence of Dogs in Cars’. His inspiration came from “childhood memory of waiting in a car whilst his parents were shopping in a supermarket, and the youthful fear that they would not return.”. His evocative images capture ‘mans best friend’ in their most thoughtful, vulnerable and reflective moments. There’s a strange sense of loss, hopelessness and even sadness contained on the face of each of his four-legged subjects. It seems that just like Usborne‘s childhood, they too are worried about their owners true intent…

Cops Called on Human-Sounding Screaming Goat
05 apr 2013 13:25
A worried resident of Edwards Lane called the Putnam Sheriff’s Department last week to report hearing a man screaming for help. Dispatchers could also hear the screams in the background of the call. Deputies Will Page and Gary Davis were dispatched to the area to look for the screaming person. “When I arrived, I spoke to the complainant,” says a report by Deputy Page. “We could hear what appeared to be a man screaming for help in the direction of a residence on Jackson Passage north of Edwards Lane.” Deputy Page went in that direction looking for the screamer, he said. Soon, they found him. “It was actually coming from a goat that was tied to a fence,” the report says. “I spoke to the owner, who stated that he was going to take care of the goat. We then returned to the complainant and notified her that everything was ok.”

‘Jurassic Park 3D’ Gets an Honest Trailer

You know, we’re going to forgive these guys for referring to the great Sam Neill as “The Guy From ‘Jurassic Park‘” (have they really never seen ‘Omen III: End of Days’????). Because this latest honest trailer from the folks at Screen Junkies is funny. And also because of their extended shot of shirtless ‘Jurassic Park’-era Jeff Goldblum posing sexily with his blouse unbuttoned. Yeah, it’s a blouse. Look at it. This popular Honest Trailers series takes popular movies, and make new trailers for them, expressing what people really think (or should be thinking) while watching in the theater. Previous efforts include ‘The Notebook,’ ‘The Dark Knight,’ ‘The Hunger Games‘ and more. Which movie should they tackle next? ‘The Host,’ perhaps? Did anyone see that one? Anyone?

Lady Gaga Turned Down $1 Million, Surprising Exactly No One
05 apr 2013 13:54
If there’s anyone with whom Lady Gaga would have a bad romance, it would be the Republican party. Which is probably why Mother Monster — devout Democrat and patron saint of everything the GOP disdains — reportedly shunned a $1 million offer to perform for the grand old party during its convention last year. According to E! News, evidence of the offer surfaced in documents filed in connection with a lawsuit from the American Action Network against an entertainment vendor. “See what it would take to get Gaga instead of Dolly [Parton],” Pete Meachum, AAN’s director of development, wrote at the time, adding that they would be willing to donate sums to women’s groups — ostensibly selling out a large fraction of their voter base — to get Gaga to appear. Classy. But Lady G was not persuaded by the offers, and neither were numerous other performers, including Pitbull and Dolly Parton. Who did the group get? Journey. (Lynyrd Skynyrd was also lined up but dropped out, and that’s what prompted the lawsuit.) The RNC issued a statement saying it knows nothing about the internal conversations and added it “neither asked, offered, thought of or ever considered the idea of Lady Gaga performing at our convention.” Which probably worked out well, since we’re pretty sure the ‘Born This Way’ singer also never “thought of or ever considered the idea” of performing there anyway.

Katy Perry Is Crying About John Mayer to Russell Brand
05 apr 2013 13:58
Katy Perry is clearly bummed post-split with John Mayer, but we’re not sure crying about it to her ex Russell Brand is the best way to get over it. “Katy reached out to him after she split with John, bemoaning her luck with men and Russell provided her with some much-needed reassurance,” an insider told Radar Online. “He flattered her with compliments and just listened to her every word. Russell also used his wit to cheer Katy up.” “Russell may appear like a comic book character, but he’s got a wise head on his skinny shoulders.” This source appears to be a good tennis player, because they’re great with backhands. Moving on. “They were the best of friends when they were together,” the tattletale said of Brand and Perry, “and despite the fact they are no longer married they’ve managed to stay civil to one another.” Apparently Brand was behind the divorce too, because the source added, “She’s very respectful of Russell’s reasons for their break-up and would never overstep the line by begging for him to come back. But she does, however, think that he was definitely the love of her life. It’s left a lot of people wondering if she thinks that she could have fought harder to save their marriage.” Brand may also have played an inadvertent role in Perry and Mayer’s inevitable breakup. “John and Katy together were like a volcano just about to go off,” the insider said. “Their relationship was incredibly volatile, stemming from the jealousy they both harbored deep inside … Katy was unhappy that John constantly flirted with other girls and played up his heartbreaker image, even when she was standing next to him.” Red flag, girl. Run!

Gio Gonzalez Says Pitching Was Like ‘Making Love To My Hand’
05 apr 2013 14:07
Nationals’ ace Gio Gonzalez pitched well on Wednesday in his team’s 3-0 win over Miami in chilly Washington, D.C. Gonzalez also hit a home run at the plate. He mashed another in the post-game interview when broadcaster Bob Carpenter asked Gonzalez how he was able to pitch in the bitter cold air of early April. Gonzalez hit the question out of the park: “It was definitely difficult, especially with this cold weather,” he said. “It was tough to get a grip. I felt like I was making love to my hand. Just one of those things where I was constantly trying to find some grip, somehow, some way. The rosin bag, whatever, licking the fingers. But it felt good after that.” You know, just trying to find some grip… the rosin bag…licking the fingers. Right, we know, Gio. Use your inside voice, dude, inside voice! After this comment and the spring training incident in which he suffered rug burn on his forehead while wrestling with his dog, Gonzalez is fast becoming the big league’s next great wacky pitcher, as known for his eccentricities as his game performance? He’s taking over the legacy handed down from Bill Lee, Mark Fidrych, Oil Can Boyd, Jose Lima, Brian Wilson and others, and the game is better for it. Just the same, maybe it’s time someone made a Match.com profile for him (or maybe got him a razor for his palm). It’s a long season.

Recently Dug Up Video of Streaker Crashing the Academy Awards
05 apr 2013 14:08
On April 1, 1974, Robert Opel was just a photographer and art gallery owner. On April 2nd, he became a legend when he ran across stage butt naked during the 46th Academy Awards. Posing as a journalist, he managed to gain access to the backstage area, and waited for the perfect moment. That moment, apparently, was when David Niven was introducing Elizabeth Taylor. Opel ran past Niven in the buck, flashing a peace sign at the camera. Without missing a beat, Niven says “Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen… But isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?” Ouch. Despite the insult, the streaking incident made Opel something of a celebrity; he was later asked by producer Allan Carr to streak at a party he was throwing. There are two things we’ve learned, in our years of partying expertise: First, anything called a “dance party” before it happens is probably not going to be fun, and second: when you have to pay for someone to get naked at your party, you’re doing it wrong.

Amish Town Blue Ball, PA Accepts $1 Million to Become Pornhub, PA
05 apr 2013 14:11
The Amish churn their own butter, but it turns out the thing they make the best is a quick buck. The small Amish town of Blue Ball, Pennsylvania will officially be known as Pornhub for the entire month of April in exchange for $1 million paid out by Pornhub.com in the greatest clash of cultures involving the Amish since Harrison Ford rocked it in ‘Witness.’ While the townspeople may be inclined to get together and build a bank from scratch to protect their new fortune, it turns out residents only agreed to the proposition last month, on the condition the money be used for “sustainable farming programs, the purchase of new equipment, and infrastructure upgrades.” Sadly, there doesn’t appear to be room in the budget to buy any Gillette Fusions so men can trim their beards. As part of the deal, the town will have new signs and a crest, as well as a website to let curious people learn about the new moniker while they laugh about how absurd this whole thing is. Blue Ball is located in Lancaster County, which is home to a large Amish population, not to mention a bevy of sexually-explicit sounding towns, including Intercourse, Mount Joy, Lititz, Bareville, Bird-in-Hand, and Paradise.

4 Craziest Strip Club Moments in History
05 apr 2013 14:13
What we know as the modern day strip club really started to gain popularity at the end of World War II, and ever since then the combination of booze and strippers has sort of become synonymous with post-Babylonian culture; a sexual haven for the common man who’s looking for cheap thrills, a dollar at a time. The reputation strip clubs have earned is due in part to their tendency toward controversy; they are often the target of litigation, a haven for organized crime and a plethora of other scandal. Drama breeds rapidly in whiskey conditions, and spawns both heretics and lunatics under strobe lights. Don’t get us wrong, this is great; it provides us with a steady stream of seedy, bizzaro folklore. Here are 4 of the craziest strip bar stories we’ve heard:

5 Wacky Condoms Considered For The Gates ‘Next Generation Condom’
05 apr 2013 14:25
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced this week that they will award a $100,000 grant to anyone who can create the “next generation condom.” When used correctly male condoms are effective, inexpensive, and easy to use. Unfortunately, they still have a stigma associated with them, mainly that they reduce sensitivity, and thus sexual pleasure. To combat this stigma, the Gates Initiative is asking participants to create a new condom which preserves or even enhances sexual pleasure, in order to encourage more people around the world to use them regularly. This is good news for everyone! Over the years many efforts have been made to improve the condom; below are a few of the wackier attempts that have been made, which we’re pretty sure the Gates Foundation will not be considering.
