Vivacious And Bold Paintings Of Vibrant Women
04 jun 2013 13:58
The first thing that strikes you about Polish artist Anna Bocek’s impressive paintings, is how much life, movement and vitality she’s able to capture. Each portrait is buzzing with energy and a vibrancy rarely seen in similar works of such scale. And whilst her technique might seem haphazard and random at first, rest assured that each stroke is skilfully pieced together, each colour dabbed on and considered in the context of the overall effect. On the inspiration which has had a profound influence on her work, Boeck had this to say: “My inspiration for painting is the theater, both as artist and viewer. I am drawn to the humanity of the characters living on stage, rather than the physical space of the theater itself. I am fascinated by the gestures, grimaces and emotions that convey the depth of our human spirit.” You can see more of her visual arresting work via her official site: http://www.annabocek.com/

Benicio Del Toro Signs Up For 'Guardians Of The Galaxy' And More
04 jun 2013 13:33
Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro has signed for a “lead role” in Guardians of the Galaxy. Deadline reports “he’s playing a character that is built to be part of future Marvel films, which means he has signed a deal with options that put him into multiple movies.” They don’t specify which character he’ll be playing in a movie loaded with an already impressive cast. Perhaps Del Toro will play a high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

Philadelphia News Anchor Nicole Brewer Hates The Weather Lady
04 jun 2013 12:07
There's passive aggressive, there’s world class passive aggressive, and then there’s this compilation of clips featuring Philadelphia CBS3 news anchor (and former Miss Pennsylvania) Nicole Brewer and meteorologist Carol Erickson. It’s just … it’s on a whole different level. Most of the video is Brewer doing schtick straight out of Mean Girls — insinuating Erickson is a humorless diva, rolling her eyes, sighing, throwing little verbal jabs under her breath, etc. — and Erickson just taking it. But then, THEN, after a testy back and forth where Brewer said she could see Erickson pulling the whole “Don’t you know who I am?” routine, Erickson throws this haymaker around the 2:10 mark. "That was an interesting exchange that I’m sure she regrets … along with that last glass of whatever." A meteorologist implying that her beauty queen coworker is either hungover or drunk at 6:45 in the morning, live, on-air? Oh, that is goooooooood television. If the bigwigs at CBS have any sense at all, they’ll give these two their own national daytime talk show. It would be like Kathie Lee and Hota, but 30x meaner. Would watch.

Here Is Cookie Monster Singing Tom Waits' 'God’s Away On Business'
03 jun 2013 19:35
Appropriately named YouTube user “CookieWaits” noticed that Tom Waits’ “God’s Away On Business” sounds a lot like it was sung by whoever does the voice for Cookie Monster on Sesame Street. He writes: “Tom Waits sometimes sounds eerily like Cookie Monster. Not that I mind! I happen to love Waits and his carnival barker’s growl!” So he mashed together a bunch of Sesame Street clips and produced a video that, if you didn’t know any better, makes it really seem as though the song is actually a Cookie Monster joint. Well done mysterious CookieWaits. Well done. Almost as well done as this…

Heath Ledger’s Inspiration For The Joker Was Probably Tom Waits
03 jun 2013 19:34
Few performances are as memorable as Heath Ledger’s terrifying, smirking inevitability as The Joker in The Dark Knight, a role which earned him a posthumous Oscar. Now Kotaku and Newsarama have tipped us to a 1979 interview of Tom Waits which is eerily similar to The Joker’s voice, inflections, and mannerisms. Thinking Heath Ledger’s inspiration for The Joker may have been Tom Waits isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. The two worked together in Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a movie which took so long to develop that it’s conceivable the two could have met at some point before The Dark Knight filmed. A then 29-years-old Tom Waits can be seen shambling, smirking, and being captivatingly weird in a 1979 Australian talk show hosted by Don Lane in the video below. Skip to 1:30 to see the start of the interview. I kept waiting for Waits to offer a magic trick demonstration to host Don Lane. I’ll just have to settle for the magic of watching Cookie Monster sing Waits’ “God’s Away On Business” instead.

'Game of Thrones' Characters Reimagined As '80s And '90s Stereotypes
03 jun 2013 19:06
Have you ever wondered what HBO's Game of Thrones would look like if it were set in the 1980s and '90s? Of course you have! Mike Wrobel, French graphic artist living in Tokyo, has illustrated this scenario by creating character art saturated with color and reminiscent of '80s and '90s fashion stereotypes. There's grunge dude Jon Snow, Miami Vice fan Jaime Lannister, douchebag Joffrey (pardon the redundancy), Sansa Stark as a Beverly Hills teen who loves boy bands, and more. There's even Daenerys Targaryen with her pets. Whatever you do, don't tell her those pets are forbidden by her apartment's lease. It won't end well. All pictures via Mike Wrobel's website: http://moshi-kun.tumblr.com/post/50584934008/game-of-thrones-80-90s-era-jon-snow-and-joffrey

Dane Cook Ridiculed for Not Letting His Show Stream Live

Comedian Dane Cook joined up with other acts last night (May 30) for the Boston Strong concert to benefit victims of last month’s Boston bombings through One Fund Boston — but unlike his fellow do-gooders, he didn’t allow his set to stream live or be televised for those watching at home. Which, as expected, got him some flak from the internet. Whereas performances by Aerosmith, the Dropkick Murphys, Boston, Jimmy Buffett and the New Kids on the Block were all available to watch by home viewers, Dane Cook’s stand-up was not. In response to everyone’s Scooby ears, he took to Twitter with this explanation:

The Best Liam Neeson Movies You Probably Haven’t Seen
01 jun 2013 16:33
Everybody loves Liam Neeson. It’s impossible not to. He’s a badass, he’s handsome, he’s got the cool accent, he seems like a smart guy and he’s starred in some of the best movies of the past quarter century. Even when he shows up for a quick and dirty paycheck like in Battleship it’s hard to begrudge the guy. (Given the recent tragedy in his personal life, my inner Jewish grandmother says “it’s good he should keep busy. And why not make a few dollars at the same time?”) I won’t suggest that you skip Battleship this weekend. With friends and some smuggled-in tall boys of Coors Light you’ll have a fine time. But don’t expect that much Liam Neeson. In fact, it may leave you wanting more, so here are eight films of his you probably haven’t seen.

Here’s How to Order Items from Starbucks’ Secret Menu
01 jun 2013 16:26
Coffee aficionados, listen up: there are more than a dozen off-the-menu drinks you can order at Starbucks. So, how does one partake of this “secret” menu? Easy. The trick is how you order and we can help. Want a “Raspberry Cheesecake”? Then order a White Chocolate Mocha and add a few pumps of raspberry. Hankering for a “Biscotti Frappuccino” instead? Then buy a biscotti and have your barista blend it with any flavor of frappuccino. Or perhaps “The Nutella” is more your speed. If so, just get a Cafe Misto with pumps of chocolate and hazelnut and a caramel drizzle. While all those sound good, the “Captain Crunch” is definitely the first secret item we’re going to order. To make one, take a Strawberries and Creme frappe with a pump of caramel, add two pumps of toffee, one pump of hazelnut and two scoops of chocolate chips. Fans of this drink say the combination of flavors tastes just like Captain Crunch cereal. Yum! Given this highly classified information, we may become a permanent resident at our local Starbucks. Check out the handy Starbucks secret menu below.

Tornado Intercept Vehicle 2

A few days ago storm chaser Brandon Ivey recorded this jaw-dropping video from inside a violent tornado in Smith County, Kansas. Ivey recorded the video alongside film director Sean Casey as their armored storm chasing truck, Tornado Intercept Vehicle 2, was engulfed by winds of up to 175 MPH. The seven-ton TIV 2 was designed by Casey to capture up-close footage of tornadoes and is equipped with metal and composite armor plate, bullet resistant windows, an IMAX camera turret, and wind skirts and anchoring devices that prevent it from being blown away. The storm reportedly tore instrumentation from the roof of the truck and breached the hull in two locations.

Google Is Going To Bring WiFi To The Unconnected With Blimps
28 may 2013 14:59

Google does a lot of very weird things. It has a top-secret lab working on dozens of projects we don’t know about. It builds fiber networks mostly because it has the money and is sick of dealing with ISPs. And now, apparently, it’s going to connect places with no Internet infrastructure by using blimps. Honestly, we question how important it is that the Third World get on the Internet as opposed to, say, sending humanitarian aid. But it can’t hurt, and entitled white kids on an “adventure” will be able to get a decent signal to post pics to Instagram with. These wireless networks would serve areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia to dwellers outside of major cities where wired Internet connections aren’t available, said people familiar with the strategy. The networks also could be used to improve Internet speeds in urban centers, these people said. Google is also developing cheap hardware to use on these networks, bringing the joy of fart apps to people who live on less than the average American’s coffee budget. Sarcasm aside, it’ll be good to connect these remote areas: there are real benefits ranging from citizen journalism to better medical treatment. And it’s been shown in the past that networks like this can provide real benefit to those living there. On the other hand, you also have to wonder what deals Google will have to cut to get these things in the air. While Africa and Southeast Asia are hardly as bad as the news tends to portray them, there are oppressive regimes and other assorted unpleasant types who really do not want Westerners to, say, find out that they’re running their country into the ground. Google may mean well, but it’s likely sooner or later to find itself embroiled in more local politics than it cares to be involved in.
