Atmospheric Photos Of New York's Storefronts At Night
13 jun 2013 15:05

Like many cities, New York has a entirely different atmosphere when the dark moves in the neon lights are switched on. "No other city in the world stages dusk to dawn like New York City. Whether it’s a glimpse out of a bus window pulling into the terminal at Port Authority, or the first step out onto the sidewalk under the Times Square lights after the end of a Broadway show that started before sunset — any visitor is immediately drawn to the city’s lights. Even simply viewing the illuminated city from the George Washington Bridge on the drive into Manhattan can be undeniably exciting." Those are the words of Avid photographers James and Karla Murray. Together they have traversed the shadowy alleyways and gloomy footpaths of The Big Apple photographing the various illuminated bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants and music venues that spring to life after dark. Much like photographer Richard Vantielcke did in the depths of Europe. Their superb collection of images are as vibrant as they are atmospheric, focusing on the diverse range of typographic styles and signage used in each location. Thankfully they’ve collated and documented their journey into a glorious coffee table book title New York Nights which you can purchase the book here. In the meantime, here’s a few samples of their rich & seductive work.

Ordinary Objects Humorously Replaced with Baguettes
13 jun 2013 08:01
Baguette-Me-Nots is an unusually funny Tumblr blog started by comedic duo Tim Bierbaum and John Milhiser (of comedy group Serious Lunch) that involves nothing more than humorously replacing objects and limbs with baguettes. The quirky project inserts the large loafs of bread in place of ordinary items like a toothbrush, gardening hose, razor, and flute. The long, narrow French bread is even used to take the place of human limbs and a dog.

If Singlhild Nystrom survives all the crazy things she’s doing, she will have one of the coolest childhood photo albums ever – all thanks to her dad’s endless imagination and Photoshop skills. Swedish photographer Emil Nystrom digitally inserts his 1-year-old daughter into such crazy situations as fixing a car, wielding a ninja sword or flying after a plane. Interestingly, some of the photos were made even before baby Singhild could crawl, her mom Isabelle had to hold her up for a shoot and be erased from the frame later.

Well, this is just about perfect. In light of all the reaction videos from people watching the “Red Wedding” episode of ‘Game of Thrones,’ here’s the reaction of the first man to ever read it, almost 13 years ago, as played by comedian Jon Bander. 7 People Who Totally Regret Ever Getting on a Swing
11 jun 2013 14:33
Just like going down the playground slide is a fun (and sometimes painful) way to revisit childhood, so to are swings. The thing about swings, though, is there’s a risk factor involved from the get-go. You know that game where you swing and swing and then try to jump off and go really far? Or the one where you try to go super high? Sure it’s fun stuff, but we have two words for you: fail central. Swings are unpredictable little buggers, which often results in falls and flips and other awfully funny injuries. See what we mean below.

Princess Monster Truck Is The Modern Cat For The Modern Internet
10 jun 2013 19:18
The cat you see before you is notable for three reasons: 1) Her name is Princess Monster Truck, 2) Her underbite would be terrifying on a person, but is adorable on a cat; and 3) HER NAME IS PRINCESS MONSTER TRUCK. According to BuzzFeed, PRINCESS MONSTER TRUCK's owners, Joseph Bryce and Tracy Timmins, found the Persian cat after she "came tumbling out of a bush when we were walking home one night from dinner...We decided we couldn't leave her, she didn't look like a survivor, and so we led her to our house. I carried her at some points crossing streets and then sometimes put her down to allow her to follow." They took PRINCESS MONSTER TRUCK to a vet, who told them that her underbite "looked like a condition from birth the way her jaw was structured, and these kinds of thing happen commonly in Persian breeds." Meaning, she's totally healthy. PRINCESS MONSTER TRUCK speaks for the people, and the people are saying: PRINCESS MONSTER TRUCK.

What a swell guy! Anyway, Jones crossed my mind earlier today — what with the NSA creeping outrage seemingly spreading by the second — as I wondered why I haven’t heard about him saying something crazy since all of this broke. Cue Alex Jones saying something crazy. But here’s the thing: the occasion for this particular slice of Alex Jones crazy pie isn’t even the NSA thing — it’s the Bilderberg convention, an annual meeting of rich and powerful people Andrew Neil, the host of the BBC political talkshow Jones appeared on, termed, “Christmas for conspiracy theorists.” Watch Jones just lose his mind and go on one of his patented incoherent rants about everything and nothing. All the greatest hits are there: FEMA concentration camps, Nazi world domination plots, floride in the tap water to make for more brainwashable minds, etc. “Bilderberg is heavily involved in the EU plan and helped hatched it and it is a Nazi plan,” Jones bloviated at one point. “Freedom will not stop, you will not stop freedom.” All of which, led to this…

A Dog Is Auctioning Off Artwork To Raise Money For Tornado Relief
10 jun 2013 18:45
Last month, we all watched in shock and horror as tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma City and its surrounding areas, leveling homes and buildings and claiming at least 24 lives while injuring hundreds of people. Many people and charitable organizations have been donating time and money to help those in need, and that includes the Central Oklahoma Humane Society, which has been housing and caring for countless displaced animals while trying to reunite them with their owners. In one of the more unique acts of generosity, the owners of a dog named Arbor are donating the net proceeds of a piece of artwork that they are auctioning off for tornado relief, and the artist is none other than Arbor herself.

Someone Paid $13,000 for One of Lady Gaga’s Fake Fingernails
07 jun 2013 21:24
How much would you pay for a fake nail that may or may not have bits of Lady Gaga‘s DNA still on it? The answer to that question for one person was $13,000, which is what they paid when the used nail went up for auction. No word on whether the fan plans to clone their own Gaga from the nail or if they merely collect Gaga memorabilia. (We really hope it’s the former.) The nail itself — which was designed by Aya Fukada — is a gold and black acrylic and was worn to the launch of Gaga’s Fame fragrance and during a concert in Dublin, Ireland. A crew member later found the nail on the ground after said concert and saw gold (or at least green), so he or she listed the item for sale. The lucky winner also received a photo of Mother Monster performing at the Dublin concert with the nail clearly missing from her hand, and memorabilia from her Born This Wa

11 Painful Sunburns We Never Want to Experience

Brace yourself folks, because we’ve scoped out some pretty awful sunburn fails we never want to experience. Oof. Few things are worse than forgetting to put on the ol’ sunscreen and turning into a well-done lobster after a few hours in the sun. Filling each bulb with paints, liquid, power and other assorted goodies, he then deliberately triggers them to explode – at the very same moment capturing the most of impact. The result is a series of startling and visually arresting images – that are superbly photographed. The tone and depth of the colours along with the crystal clarity of each image (you’re looking a sequence occurs in less than 1/4 of a second) makes for fascinating viewing. Each picture is unique, every explosion different and every outcome a colourful surprise. Vivacious And Bold Paintings Of Vibrant Women
04 jun 2013 13:58
The first thing that strikes you about Polish artist Anna Bocek’s impressive paintings, is how much life, movement and vitality she’s able to capture. Each portrait is buzzing with energy and a vibrancy rarely seen in similar works of such scale. And whilst her technique might seem haphazard and random at first, rest assured that each stroke is skilfully pieced together, each colour dabbed on and considered in the context of the overall effect. On the inspiration which has had a profound influence on her work, Boeck had this to say: “My inspiration for painting is the theater, both as artist and viewer. I am drawn to the humanity of the characters living on stage, rather than the physical space of the theater itself. I am fascinated by the gestures, grimaces and emotions that convey the depth of our human spirit.” You can see more of her visual arresting work via her official site: http://www.annabocek.com/

Philadelphia News Anchor Nicole Brewer Hates The Weather Lady
04 jun 2013 12:07
There's passive aggressive, there’s world class passive aggressive, and then there’s this compilation of clips featuring Philadelphia CBS3 news anchor (and former Miss Pennsylvania) Nicole Brewer and meteorologist Carol Erickson. It’s just … it’s on a whole different level. Most of the video is Brewer doing schtick straight out of Mean Girls — insinuating Erickson is a humorless diva, rolling her eyes, sighing, throwing little verbal jabs under her breath, etc. — and Erickson just taking it. But then, THEN, after a testy back and forth where Brewer said she could see Erickson pulling the whole “Don’t you know who I am?” routine, Erickson throws this haymaker around the 2:10 mark. "That was an interesting exchange that I’m sure she regrets … along with that last glass of whatever." A meteorologist implying that her beauty queen coworker is either hungover or drunk at 6:45 in the morning, live, on-air? Oh, that is goooooooood television. If the bigwigs at CBS have any sense at all, they’ll give these two their own national daytime talk show. It would be like Kathie Lee and Hota, but 30x meaner. Would watch.
