Fashion Fails
01 apr 2013 16:56

There have been an abundance of celebrity Hindenburgs throughout the years — fashion and grooming choices that crash and burn in front of millions of flashbulbs and gawking eyes on the red carpet and beyond, leaving everyone wondering, “WTF where they thinking?” Sometimes it’s what stars are wearing — or not wearing — that catches our attention, other times it’s an unfortunate hair style, and occasionally it’s even a regretful nip and tuck. And often? The mistakes enter pop culture lore and live there in perpetuity. On this list, you’ll see some of the biggest style derps, blunders and overall fails in recent memory. Join us as we stroll down this bumpy Memory Lane, won’t you?

Matt Smith

Rejoice, fellow lady nerds! ‘Doctor Who‘ returned to BBC Saturday night with a brand new episode featuring our favorite sexy time-traveling Doctor and his bow tie. There is only one man on Earth, besides Bill Murray, who can make a bow tie look cool, and that’s Matt Smith of ‘Doctor Who.’ For those unfamiliar, a quick primer: The Doctor is an alien who is like, 1,000 years old and flies around in a ship that looks like a police call box. It’s called a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space) and it’s bigger on the inside, and it can travel anywhere in time and space. The Doctor is a lonely guy and he always has a companion — usually a lady — with whom to travel around and help save the universe. But what you really need to know is that the Doctor is so sexy. Matt Smith is a former rugby player who had to give up the sport due to an injury — and with no real acting background, the guy auditions for the long-running BBC series ‘Doctor Who,’ landing the part and becoming probably the hottest Doctor to date (if you’re not counting David Tennant, who was also pretty darn foxy). If you don’t watch the show because you’re thinking it’s super nerdy or whatever, you’re making a huge mistake because Smith is not only insanely cute, he’s also really charismatic and funny, and the show itself is loads of fun.

Celebrity pranking
01 apr 2013 16:22

April Fool’s Day is today, and what better way to celebrate the day that it’s totally cool to wrap a toilet in cellophane than to go through some of the best celebrity pranks throughout the ages? Of course, by “ages,” we mean anything within the new millennium. Whether they’re perpetrated on the first of April, done to add a spark of fun to a hoity toity red carpet, or executed merely for comedic purposes, pranks have been a traditional part of human culture since the 1300s. At least according to Geoffrey Chaucer and his unfinished ‘Canterbury Tales.’ (Fred Flintstone would probably disagree, though.) Anyway, check out our list to see a lot of prankster celebs and their unwitting victims.

Lindsey goes to rehab. Again.
01 apr 2013 14:03

Back on March 18, Lindsay Lohan finally took a plea deal for a lockdown rehab facility in her lying to the cops case. But she had one condition: She wanted permission to take Adderall while she’s drying out. Sources for TMZ say La Lohan has been using the drug for years and is convinced she needs it to function. Interestingly enough, she was first prescribed the medicine (used to treat ADHD, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder) while behind bars back in 2010, which caused all sorts of controversy. For her recent plea deal, LiLo said she wanted to take her Adderall while in rehab, or she’d take her chances with a trial. At the time, lawyer Mark Heller assured her she would be able to hold onto her prescription security blanket while she’s in her court-mandated lockdown rehab. Despite, you know, not being eligible for the few lockdown rehabs that actually exist. Ironically, I could use a little Adderall myself to help keep track of the increasingly confusing details of this mess. Nah. Just kidding. That's what coffee is for.

Prince might testify on Michael Jackson's behalf
01 apr 2013 13:55

Prince never worked with or knew Michael Jackson, but he may still testify against the tour promoter who both hired and was supposed to supervise Michael’s doctor, Conrad Murray, because that’s how the American justice system works. The late Michael Jackson and Prince could finally cross paths as MJ’s mother Katherine has plans to use the Purple One as a witness in her wrongful death lawsuit against promoter AEG. Michael’s kids, Prince Michael I and II and Paris, helped along by Katherine, are suing the promoter for $40 billion in damages. (Yes, billion with a B.) According to documents obtained by TMZ, Katherine has a list of over 100 witnesses she plans to have testify, including Prince, who allegedly had bad experiences with AEG in the past.

Unfortunately not a joke Shaine Gandee is no longer with us.
01 apr 2013 13:52

Shain Gandee, star of MTV’s ‘Buckwild,’ has reportedly been found dead in West Virginia some 30 hours after going missing. Local news station WCHS reports that Gandee and his uncle, 48-year-old David Gandee, were found in Shain’s car along with another unidentified person in Sissonville, West Virginia on Monday, April 1. (Yes, we’ve taken into account that it’s April Fool’s Day, but if this is a joke, it’s a sick one involving a lot of otherwise credible sources. So we’re assuming this is sadly true.) The Gandee men were last seen Sunday when they were last spotted leaving a local bar at 3 a.m. They told fellow patrons they planned to go four-wheeling after the drinks, but didn’t tell anyone where — and they didn’t come back. ‘Buckwild,’ which features several good ol’ boys and girls from West Virginia, is known to profile the antics of Shain, who’s referred to as a “redneck McGyver” and who built a swimming pool inside a dump truck in the show’s first episode. MTV picked up the series for another season in January, but this news coupled with the arrest of another cast member, 24-year-old Salwa Amin, for felony drug possession may nix those plans.

Blue dazzling van
01 apr 2013 13:44

Let’s face it, people tend to love their cars. A lot. You only have to watch shows like Pimp My Ride to see how utterly over-the-top people can go in order to make their 4 wheeled machines stand out from the crowd. So with that in mind, we’ve picked 14 vans which have been pimped out, souped up and sprayed painted to within an inch of their lives. We’re going to reserve judgement on the designs themselves, but we have to admit there are certainly more than few “interesting” artworks on display!

Inventive British street artist and illustrator extraordinaire David Shillinglaw is one of the few graffiti artists, who’s colourful work can be seen in some of the most remote and unusual locations in the world. “Life is a struggle. For everyone. From the smallest insect to the greatest beast, we are determined by the success we seek, and how, in turn we measure that success. Each of us experiencing ups and downs. Peaks and troughs. Like a game of snakes and ladders.” - David Shillinglaw You’ll see his imagination not only colouring the streets of London and Paris, but also places like Kosovo, Gambia and even Cape Town. His eceletic mix of fonts, words, faces and limbs form his unique and signature style – it’s striking, energetic, seriously cool and a hell of a lot of fun.

Even today there is so little we truly understand about our universe, it’s untapped mysterious and the existence of extraterrestrial life. So you can imagine that back in 1939 when space exploration and telescopes were much less evolved, creative individuals like illustrator Frank R. Paul were given free rein to fill the void of expectation. Working with the likes of famous science fiction writers Ray Bradbury, Forrest J Ackerman and Arthur C. Clarke, he created his own perception of how the aliens of Mars, Neptune or Venus might appear. Would they be threatening or welcoming? Would they be robots or creatures? Would they be armed or unarmed? And how would man react to meeting them? Through his colorful and vibrant art, Frank R. Paul has attempted to answer some of these questions. You can see the full range of his work here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joebehr/sets/72157624487397272/detail/

When it comes to graphic design, the 1920′s and 1930′s serve as fascinating zeitgeist in Japanese culture. The surging influence of the Western culture in different mediums – cinema, magazines and TV, started to be adopted & reconfigured by Japanese artists. These evolving art forms reflected Japan’s socio-economic transformation, the rise of its industry and technology sectors and even a shift in political thinking, from right to the more social aware left. Those internal influences, combined with that of from the West, had a significant impact on traditional Japanese graphic design. Suddenly it started to becoming bolder, brighter, less stark, more colorful and it’s imagery more impactful & striking. The fascinating evolution of Japanese graphic design in the 1920-1930′s was a direct reflection the bubbling melting pot of influences & issues occurring within the country itself. Below are a few highlights during that decade of change, you can find out more about the evolution of Japanese graphic design by getting yourself a copy of Modernism on Paper: Japanese Graphic Design of the 1920s-30s from which these are taken. Enjoy!

Kevin Ware Lies on the Floor After Gruesome Injury
01 apr 2013 13:28

During Sunday's NCAA men's Basketball game, Kevin Ware of the Louisville Cardinals suffered a gruesome injury breaking one of his legs, in the first half of the game against the Duke Blue Devils in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 31st, 2013. Ware broke his right leg in two places, as he landed awkwardly with all of his weight on the leg during an attempt to block a shot from the other team. The injury is said to have looked a lot more shocking than it actually appears. The player is in recovery, and even though it will take him a year to fully recover he stayed positive and very courageous throughout the process, telling his team to focus on winning the game. The reaction from the teams and the audience was very emotional. Some players and even the coaches were crying as the audience was also in complete shock.

Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut's Asian Cairns project proposes a new look for China's urban environments, offering an eco-friendly alternative known as farmscrapers (in lieu of skyscrapers). With China's urbanized population growing, leaving fewer and fewer countryside inhabitants, there is an inevitable increase in energy consumption and, thus, an environmental concern. Callebaut's project seeks to restructure the city of Shenzhen by placing his innovative vertical farming towers as a positive response to the impending environmental issues.
