Gorgeous Spiraling Staircase Mimics a Whale's Spine
12 feb 2013 09:04
Not your typical spiral staircase, this organic form is a concept by artist and architect Andrew McConnell. The piece, entitled the Vertebrae Staircase, is based off of the spine of a whale. According to the artist's website, the project "is not simply mimicry of organic form but an exploration in shaping structure. Much of the design work went into refining the single component, or vertebra, that mate with each other creating a unified spine running from floor plate to floor plate."

Shape-Shifting GIFs of Fine Art Sculptures
12 feb 2013 09:01
Tumblr user hateplow has created a series of GIFs that shift back and forth between figurative sculptures and pixelated abstractions. The glitchy animated images present an intriguing perspective of art. They're hypnotizing in their constant shape-shifting motion, but they also showcase the different forms one work of art can take. Any given piece is a chosen form of interpretation out of a wide spectrum of possible renditions, revealing the artist's option to either replicate a figure exactly, add geometric ridges, or blur the creation entirely.

For photojournalist Sarah Fretwell, photography is an outlet that goes beyond art—it is a medium through which the world is given insight into the lives of people who would otherwise never be heard. For her powerful The Truth Told Project, the photographer has ventured out to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for 50 days to capture portraits and statements from young girls and women who have suffered unimaginable sexual violence as innocent victims of war.

Flexible Paper Sculptures by Li Hongbo
12 feb 2013 08:56
Li Hongbo’s artwork may look like porcelain or gypsum sculptures at first, but that’s only until he demonstrates how flexible they are. Beijing based artist, book designer and editor creates these busts and sculptures out of thousands of layers of glued thin paper. Hongbo builds the honeycomb-like structures by strategically placing the glue on each sheet of paper, and then gives the desired shape to it.

Sheltering Abandoned Animals
12 feb 2013 08:28
All these animals lived on the street until they were found by their new owners. It warms my heart knowing there are good people in this world who are not afraid to pick up an abandoned and sickly animal and give it care that every living creature deserves.

9 Years on Mars
12 feb 2013 07:45
NASA's Mars rover Opportunity just celebrated its ninth anniversary on Mars - a mission that was originally meant to last just 90 days. Although recently eclipsed in the news by its bigger brother Curiosity, Opportunity is still going strong and making valuable scientific discoveries. Launched into space in 2003, Opportunity bounced to a hole-in-one landing in a small crater on Mars' Meridiani Planum on January 25, 2004. It has since spent 3,212 Martian days, or sols, on the surface, slowly moving from target to target, exploring craters, meteorites, unusual rock formations, and finding evidence of past water activity. Over the past 108 months, Opportunity has driven a total of 35.48 kilometers (22.05 miles) across Mars -- not bad for a mission designed to last only three months.

Chinese Lunar New Year 2013
12 feb 2013 07:32

Yesterday marked the start of the Chinese Lunar New Year 2013, the Year of the Snake. One of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, the snake signifies cleverness and tenacity and is associated with the element of fire. In the larger Chinese astrological cycle, this year is also associated with the element of water, which makes 2013 the Year of the Water Snake. The combination of the water and fire elements may signify turmoil in the months ahead. But people around the world ushered in the new year with displays of fireworks, family get-togethers, temple visits, and street festivals. Collected here are images from several countries where revelers have been welcoming the arrival of the Water Snake.

Commander Chris Hadfield's incredible pictures from space
12 feb 2013 07:29
A snap-happy astronaut captured this incredible shot of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge from his perch hundreds of miles above the earth on board the International Space Station. Commander Chris Hadfield, 53, has posted hundreds of breathtaking images on his Twitter account since joining the crew as part of Expedition 34 just a few weeks ago. As well as San Francisco's famous landmark, Commander Hadfield - who has described the shifting view of the earth from windows of the space station as 'a perpetual magnet' - has snapped the bright lights of Manhattan at night, the 'endless' golden beaches of Australia, a vivid blue river snaking through Brazilian farmland, and 'cauliflower' clouds sitting over the Amazon rainforest.

|BestVideos| It's Raining Spiders In Brazil - Santo Antonio de Plantina
12 feb 2013 03:31

Hundreds, or maybe thousands, of spiders between two poles in the town of Santa Antonio de Plantina in Parana, Brazil. We don’t know why they’re acting like this, we’re trying to find out and will post if anyone gets back to us with an answer. It’s hard to get a still shot that does video justice. It looks like the spiders have the house surrounded. The guy filming it just keeps saying, “it’s raining spiders!” This is pure horror movie material. None of these still images does the video justice, you have to watch. Keep in mind that each image is only a small area compared to the total. They’re everywhere surrounding the house:

Floating People in Bence Bekonyi Photo Project

Levitation has been a mystery since the very early days on Paeganism. But is it real? Photographer Bence Bekonyi makes it possible in his collection of "floating people."

His images leave us with chills as he centers the stage with large bulky man-made objects, and people levitating in a deathly sort of way above them.

Lady Gaga did the Impossible and Upstagged Jagger at his own Concert!

While I love Lady Gaga, I often get irritated with her because her penchant for walking around with live ocelots on her head obscures the fact that she’s a mad talented vocalist. Ask most people if she can actually sing and they probably wouldn’t even know. But the Lady can wail. And she proved it at a Dec. 15 appearance with the Rolling Stones.
