Nathan Pyle is an artist and illustrator that has been living in New York City for the past 4.5 years. During that period he has learned much about how things work in one of the world’s greatest cities. In a new series entitled, NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette, Pyle has created a guide for newcomers in the form of illustrated animated gifs.

For most parents and kids, crossing the street to catch the school bus is perhaps the riskiest part of the school run. But take a look at these Chinese schoolchildren from the village of Genguan. Everyday, these young kids walk along a precarious path carved by the side of a cliff, as they make their way to class in Bijie, in southwest China's Guizhou Province. Banpo Elementary School is located halfway up a mountain and the path to it winds through treacherous hillside passes and tunnels hewn out of the rock. The pebble-covered footpath is less than 0.5 meters wide, which means the children have to walk single file and press themselves into the side of the mountain if someone wants to squeeze past. This footpath was created 40 years ago as an irrigation ditch and although there is another safer route, but taking this means the children have to spend two hours to walk to school. The only assurance for parents is that Headmaster Xu Liangfan accompanies the 49 kids to school.

London-based artist Rebecca Stevenson creates figurative sculptures that blossom into surreal structures. Her multimedia figures, primarily constructed out of wax, incorporate floral motifs. The artists produces realistic renderings of heads paired with unconventional patterns and colors that burst out from the temple of her bodiless subjects.

Did you know that the peppermint flavor in your chewing gum and toothpaste, and the red-ruby grapefruit on your plate, is the result of mutation caused by deliberate irradiation? Apparently, after World War II, there was a concerted effort to find peaceful uses for atomic energy. Sea Launch was established in 1995 as a consortium of four companies from Norway, Russia, Ukraine and the United States, managed by Boeing with participation from the other shareholders. Operated by the Russians, this commercial spacecraft launch service uses a mobile sea platform for equatorial launches of payloads on specialized Zenit 3SL rockets. Since the first rocket flight on March 1999, it has assembled and launched thirty-one rockets, with three failures and one partial failure.

The trouble is, there’s still a certain amount of guess-work with any type of creative campaign. I recently discovered the visual stunning work of American hyperrealisitic-oil painter Damian Loeb. At times it’s virtually impossible to distinguish the fine strokes of his oils works from that of a high-resolution photograph. In an era where modern art seems to be putting greater emphasis on the ‘concept’, Loeb is one of the few artists out there flying the flag and embracing the traditional techniques & craft used by some of the world’s greatest painters. Make no mistake, it is no easy task creating and painting with oil – it requires an incredible sense of patience, restraint and calm. For that he should be admired regardless (it’s certainly a harder route to take) but his technique, brilliance and the clarity of his work speaks for itself.

Often seen above mountains or hills, lenticular clouds are extraordinary clouds that, due to their smooth saucer-like shape, are often mistaken for UFOs. Lenticular clouds are formed when a current of moist air is forced upwards as it travels over a mountain, causing the moisture to condense and form a cloud. They can appear as if they're sitting stationary, hovering above our planet in an unusual fashion for hours or even days. That's because the flow of moist air continually resupplies the cloud from the windward side even as water evaporates and vanishes from the leeward side. Lenticular clouds are considered a rare sight, especially in areas where there are no mountains. When the sun sets, viewers are often treated with a spectacular display as the clouds are lit with brilliant colors, almost as if someone had painted the sky. As Adamus said about the photo above, “Surreal, otherworldly, foreboding...perhaps a once in a lifetime combination of colors, shapes and textures. This awesome lenticular cloud formation occurred at sunset over Oregon's Alvord Desert in late December, ahead of an impending storm."

One of the best known symbols of spring in Japan are the magnificent pink Japanese cherry trees, also called sakura. Starting in mid-March, the Internet is flooded with amazing pictures of all varieties of pink, blooming in parks and streets of different cities of Japan. The earliest city to blossom is Tokyo – this year its sakura trees are expected to be in full bloom by the end of March. Depending on a city, Japanese cherry trees may bloom even through May. As the official Japanese school year starts in April, the first day back at school or work after the holidays usually coincides with the blooming of the sakuras. You will always see many locals picnicking under the cherries every season – the tradition is called hanami, and dates back to the 8th century!

You might have seen those rather funny retro furniture catalogs from the 1950’s at various garage sales and charity shops. A funny reminder of times gone by, when all people worried about was whether the sofa set would match the lampshade. But visual artist Nadine Boughton is adding her own twist to these inspirational images of yesteryear, by adding in illustrations from numerous adventure stories also from the same era. As the overall aesthetic and even fading of the both the books and illustrations is similar, the end result is a collage that looks startlingly real. We reckon she must have a great deal of fun creating these works, starting off with a sense of tranquility and calm, before adding in some god-forsaken monster or wild animal into the scene! The Irish town of Kilgarvan passed a motion this winter calling for some members of its community to be allowed to drink and drive. This motion was proposed by local pub owner / Politician Danny Healy-Rae. The motion would all for the minister of justice to allow police to decide whether to issue permits to people who live in country areas to be allowed to drink two or three drinks before they drive home. Healy-Rae said the motion would preserve pub culture and lower the risk of suicide based on attack isolation in small towns. The Alcohol safety organizations slammed the proposed plan. Healy-Rae responded to all the backlash and says it isn't supposed to apply to everyone, mainly the old people who live far out in the country side. He claims "What else are they supposed to do with no public transportation, stay home lonely and stare at the walls?" Some local politicians are still shocked the motion passed.

Josie Cunningham was not happy with her 32A Breasts. She was so unhappy that somehow she managed to convince the National Health Service board to approve an operation to enhance her beasts to 36DD's. Which meant she did not have to pay a dime of the $7,279 operation and the British taxpayers did. She stated her formerly flat chest made her emotionally distressed. She went on to say "I want money and fame." and "My new boobs can make it all happen". The taxpayers felt duped on this one. The NHS is for people with serious medical needs not wannabe career models. Josie got away with one here.

These days, new names for genres pop up every day, and with good reason—despite what old-timey snobs say about music today, there’s a lot of new sounds being played with and no shortage of experimentation that makes it hard to classify with the good old words we’ve been using for decades. That being said, sometimes it gets taken too far. With so many variations of dubstep being invented, the everything-”step” names keep coming. I'm calling out some of the most unnecessary, and silly names ending in "step" today. Just stop step!
