Surf Trooper
30 oct 2012 20:07

Ever since we spotted Darth Vader on holiday, there’s a question that’s been bothering us: who’s overseeing the plans for the new Death Star? Clearly it’s not this Stormtrooper who, after realising the big man was taking a well-earned sojourn, decided he’d do the same (does anyone actually do any work around there?). On his travels, the helmet clad chap has taken a shine to surfing, swimming and some Thai Chi (we think). Although, like most of us even when we’re on holiday it takes a while to relax and forget about the day job (see second pic above).

Superhero Dinosaurs

We think that is explanation enough Stop the press. Hold the front page. And ditch the coffee, we’ll have a cognac. Dinosaurs did not die out; they just bunkered down for a few millennia, waited for someone to invent superheroes and then decided to join the party. Well, we imagine that’s how artist David Resto justified his superhero dinosaur creations anyway. Either way, we’re sold. Iron Brontosaurus, Captain Ameritops, Hulkasaurus Rex, Ankylothorus, heck, this stuff writes, or should we say, draws, itself. Now we want to see a fight off with these celeb superheroes…

Top 10 Hotel Views In The World

Better than the M62 Travelodge We've stayed in many places that have barely been passed fit for human habitation: cockroaches, no hot water, views of a brick wall and, worst of all, no complimentary biscuits. But we suspect that this won't be a problem if you pick one from a new website, The Most Perfect View, which showcases an international range of luxury hotels that offer truly spectacular vistas (and, we'd imagine, really good biscuits). Below are our top 10 views; don't worry Lenny, the M6 Toll Premier Inn was no. 11 we promise. PIAZZA DEL CAMPO, SIENA, ITALY, 1280-1350
30 oct 2012 18:43
"I thought I’d be a bit mischievous and seek to re-write the rules. Buildings are important, but they’re not the only part of the story. The infrastructure that binds the architecture - by that I mean the squares, the parks, the connections - together is more important than the buildings themselves. This beautiful square in Siena is one of the very first examples of a space that was actually planned. It serves as the spatial heart of the city. It’s a very, very beautiful space and it...

Amazing Pumpkin Carvings by Ray Villafane

This guy is amazing. His attention to detail and the way he can twist and really deform the pumpkins into living art is reminiscent of Bernini. The solid pumpkin comes alive in this mans hands. Check it out and tell me these are not some of the most life like pumpkins you have seen.

Curiosity Stars Taking Samples of Soil
30 oct 2012 03:40

Scooping up a handful of dirt may seem simple, but for a robot operating on another planet, it’s a major operation. NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover is making itself ready to collect its first soil sample at an area called “Rocknest.” The preparations involve testing the nuclear-powered rover’s motorized scoop and cleaning out its Chemistry and Mineralogy (ChemMin) and Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) laboratories of any terrestrial contaminants before receiving soil samples

Brilliant New Bizarre Photography
29 oct 2012 18:32
It's not often that we here at Shortlist.com make grand statements (we usually prefer somewhat medium) but we're going to come right out and say that Adrian Samson is our new favourite photographer. The Hungarian genius, who now lives in London and works freelance with Getty Images, has provided us with a variety of images to stare lovingly at. The pics are deceptively glossy but succeed in subverting our expectations. Hang on, what's that giant plastic bumblebee doing by that lamppost? Wait, why does that elderly woman have an AC/DC tattoo on her neck? Originally aiming to be a fashion photographer, the unconventional Samson found his style to be "too quirky" so focused on advertising instead.

21st Century Totem Poles
29 oct 2012 18:02
The iconic Native American totem poles have come back around for the age of the 21st century. After a particularly greedy weekend, we might take a look at the bin and feel a little bit awful. Not just because of our ever-expanding waistline or ever-decreasing bank balance but because of the whole environment and all that. Photographer David Welch creates totem poles from a variety of items that sum up our consumptive habits. His images aim to create discussion around how much we use and take for granted. While they certainly do that, they also leave us feeling even guiltier, as that pile of burgers is making us absurdly hungry. We may have missed the point on that one.
