30 jan 2013 13:00

Just when we were beginning to think Ashley Judd had done the right thing in marrying Dario Francitti, we've been proved wrong again!

After just 11 years (still longer than the everage American celeb couple, so I guess they actually did pretty well), the stay couple is calling it quits.

In an official statement Judd said, "We have mutually decided to end our marriage," the couple said in a joint statement. "We'll always be family and continue to cherish our relationship based on the special love, integrity, and respect we have always enjoyed."

At least there was so huge battle, I guess.

A tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.
22 jan 2013 21:06
In honor of Martin Luther King Day, theCHIVE will not be posting regularly today. We’ll be back tomorrow though, don’t worry. For now, I’d like to share with you this gallery as a tribute to the man responsible for this morning’s few extra hours of sleep. Martin Luther King Jr. is often hailed as the greatest hero of the African-American community, but to call him that is to miss his message almost entirely. Although Dr. King’s name will appear in history books next to the rights he helped earn for African-Americans, his greatest gift to us was the brilliant, shining example he set for all men. Dr. King’s speeches call not just for equality for black people but for love and compassion from everyone for everyone, and they do so with language more beautiful than mere words have any right to be.

Classroom Design Matters!
18 jan 2013 16:19

As debates over education reform make their way to the headlines, teachers are pointing fingers at poor classroom design and poor classroom funding. Apparently they've done their homework, because new studies are proving, left and right, that the classroom design itself is in fact a deciding factor in the amount of information a child is able to take in by 25%, according to the journal Building and the Environment. In a full year span, that amounts to a full year's academic progress!

The study was conducted over the 2011-2012 academic year on 751 students in 34 classrooms spread across 7 primary schools in Blackpool, Eangland.

After collecting data on the students performance levels going into the school year, the researchers, comprising faculty from the University of Salford School of the Built Environment in Manchester, England, as well as collaborators from the architecture firm Nightingale Associates, ranked each classroom on a 1 to 5 scale for 10 different design parameters: light, sound, temperature, air quality, choice, flexibility, connection, complexity, color, and texture. Each of these parameters were broken down into a few considerations. Light, for example, included the amount of natural light entering the classroom, as well as the teacher’s ability to manually control the level of lighting; flexibility took into consideration how well a given classroom could accommodate pupils without crowding them, in addition to how easily its furniture could be rearranged for a variety of activities and teaching approaches.

Syria Suffers Bombing: Big Whoop
18 jan 2013 16:13

A rocket attack in Aleppo, fighting at a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus and two car bomb explosions south of the capital. Big deal, right? Well it turns out that these events have marked the conclusion to one of the bloodiest weeks in the Syrian civil war. When will these wars end? Was our survival of the 2012 Apocalypse even real? Can it be leading to something even worse? Seems like if any of these questions answer yes, the insanity in Syria is a warning or the rest of us.

'Dear Abby' Dies at 94: Women Go Bezerk
18 jan 2013 15:32

With no real help to turn to besides your local shrink, this generation is sure going to be a lonely one.

The famous advice columnist behind the much adored "Dead Abby" stories has passed away at age 94.

After 50 years of giving advice to women in distress, we've all gotten used to the idea of leaning on someone. Now that both of the advice twins are up in heaven, what are the rest of us supposed to do? Those other columnists never seem to have anything witty to say or any real usable advice! Looks like we're at a loss now, at east until she get reincarnated (hopefully into something/someone useful).

American Idol Goes Pop All The Way
18 jan 2013 14:48
This just in: Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban, & Mariah Carey are the newest American Idol judges to accompany old timer Randy Jackson. Keith Urban is the show's first country genre judge, which seems appropriate after more than one contenstant and winner have been big fans of the genre. Nicki Minaj is a more surprising pick, but since the show plummeted last season, they are really trying to make up for the loss by adding a "hot on the scene" star. Minaj gives the show an edge they never had before; rap. Mariah Carey is probably just another reason for people who don't even like the show to audition. This means we should expect a lot more gay men to audition, older women, as well as annoying doppelgangers (remember "A ken-leeeeeee!" ?).

Lance Armstrong's Dope Problems

Lance Armstrong confessed to his abuse of the drug, dope, while speaking to a talk show host several days ago. And though people of the tabloids and celeb news seem to be making it a big deal, big wig David Howman, the executive director of the World Anti-Doping Agency, says "so what?" Richard Pound, the founding chairman of WADA and a member of the International Olympic Committee, also said he was unmoved. “If what he’s looking for is some kind of reconstruction of his image instead of providing entertainment with Oprah Winfrey, he’s got a long way to go. He’s certainly going to have to be more forthcoming.”

It's not Easy to be President
18 jan 2013 13:24

After just 4 years in office, but many more in politics, Barack Obama has been displaying all the classic signs of stress: his hair has become grayer than ever, the wrinkles above his brow are prominent, the plumpness of his cheeks has melted and become more like a set of flaps than a smile bump. It's tough tobe Barack, especially with a country as divided as ours about certin key issues regarding foreign policy (as we know not his strongest suit).

What Bane Almost Looked Like in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

One of the behind-the-scenes documentaries included on the discs shows off some behind-the-scenes photos of Tom Hardy as Bane plus some concept art on what Bane almost looked like. Because of his trademark mask, Bane was always going to be a difficult character to adapt into Christopher Nolan’s universe. (Remember how he looked like a Mexican wrestler in ‘Batman and Robin?’) But with all the options they had, it looks like Nolan and crew made the best choice.
