Gene Simmons, Neal Schon + Jonathan Cain: National Anthem Roundup
30 sep 2013 12:42

If you felt an extra burst of patriotism this past weekend, it may have been because of what a few of your favorite classic rockers were up to.As we previously reported, Gene Simmons of Kiss headed to London over the weekend, where he helped kick off a special U.K.-hosted matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings by performing the national anthem. We’ve seen Simmons sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ before — he did it at an Oakland Raiders game in 2012 — but if you’re eager...

Where the Beer is Warm and the Women Cold. Motorcycles OK. Once a staple for Stagehands and Bicycle Messengers, Zeitgeist, is now filled with fedora wearing Marina Kids complete with dock shoes on. The old regulars a once rambunctious punk fun crowd, rarely visit. Burgers are pretty good and even have gotten on the gluten free bun bandwagon, but Bloody Mary's are still fantastic and a classic. It's a fun place to catch a game, but seating is not usually available unless you...

Is 'Grand Theft Auto V' Misogynist?
27 sep 2013 20:38

The Grand Theft Auto series has been criticized, more than once, for its treatment of women. This is a franchise where you used to be able to use hookers for a health boost, and then kill them to get your money back, after all. And Grand Theft Auto V has gotten lambasted for this treatment. But is that valid?First of all, the answer to the question is “Yes, to some degree.” But it’s important to sort what’s received wisdom in the video game industry versus what Rockstar was trying to...

Apple May Be Making A Gold iPad Mini
27 sep 2013 20:36

This news is less than surprising, given our apparently bottomless lack of taste as a species; a gold iPad Mini might be on the way as part of the Mini refresh. And it’ll also have the amusingly useless nipple scanner…errr…Touch ID because why the hell not?The rumor comes courtesy a Chinese site called DoNews, which has a spotty track record when it comes to this stuff, but it’s not like they’re telling us something a large corporation that likes money wouldn’t do. And honestly, it makes...

Everyone’s favorite comedian Louis CK just won a Creative Arts Emmy (Emmy for short) for “Outstanding Writing In A Variety Special” for his HBO special “Oh My God.” The ginger-haired funnyman wasn’t at the award show itself, however. Luc Besson Would Like To Make A 'Fifth Element' Sequel (Plus Cosplay)

There are certain sci-fi movies we can watch every time they're on TV. Among these rewatchable sci-fi flicks is Luc Besson's The Fifth Element (1997). It has everything sci-fi goes great with: the humor, the refusal to take itself too seriously, the realistically incompetent authority figures (some things never change), the cool visuals and wardrobe, or the eclectic cast. Tommy "Tiny" Lister as the President? Yes please.Luc Besson recently gave a long interview about numerous things, like...

Jon Stewart Mocks Cables News Over Syria Coverage On 'Daily Show'
10 sep 2013 10:14

Oh hey that whole WAR WAR WAR with Syria thing is still a thing that’s looming out there. It’s easy to forget about it what with Breaking Bad going HAM and the return of football and the kids twerking and that. But this morning brings a rather interesting development that may actually help to avert America having to invade another Middle Eastern country. Reports CNN: "Facing the threat of a U.S. military strike, the country’s leaders Tuesday reportedly accepted a Russian proposal to turn over its chemical weapons. The development, reported by Syrian state television and Russia’s Interfax news agency, came a day after the idea bubbled up in the wake of what appeared to be an off-the-cuff comment by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry. And while U.S. officials say they remain skeptical, it quickly changed the debate in Washington from solely “Should the U.S. attack?” to “Is there a diplomatic way out of this mess?”"

8 Amazing Callbacks From The Final Season Of Breaking Bad
10 sep 2013 10:06

A great final season of television should be like a great novel: Everything that came before should mean something. All along, Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad has been about great, efficient storytelling. Every element is necessary and irreplaceable. A final season should make use of all of those elements: It should be like an amazing, unpredictable, mind-blowing new song with elements of the rest of the album interwoven into the narrative. That is exactly what the final season of Breaking Bad has been so far. Everything from the previous five seasons informs this sixth season (or season 5B, if you prefer). By calling back to earlier episodes, Vince Gilligan is rewarding his audience for paying attention and, in the process, enriching those earlier episodes, which mean more now that we’re seeing how they inform the final eight episodes. I don’t know how else to say it except that all the callbacks and parallels from the last five episodes has been really f***king NEAT. I have taken the liberty of cataloging 25 of the callbacks and parallels from the first five episodes of the final season (the final season, for our purposes, is only the last eight episodes of the series). There may be more. There will no doubt be more in the final three episodes. People will probably continue to spot them for years to come. Some guy in 2016 watching the entire series for the sixth time may spot something new in “Rabid Dog” that he’s never seen before and his mind may finally explode all over his laptop. In the decades to come, people are going to look at this series as the perfect example of how to make a great, entertaining, compelling, intense and intelligent series that rewards its audience as much as it challenges it. These brilliant callbacks are just one of the many reasons why Breaking Bad will persevere.

A great final season of television should be like a great novel: Everything that came before should mean something.

Oh yeah baby. You KNOW I'll be on that Gaga news.
05 sep 2013 23:26

Lady Gaga will reportedly appear on ‘Saturday Night Live‘ for the third time come this fall, but unlike her past appearances, Mother Monster will be acting as both the host and the musical guest during an episode of the long-running comedy program. This will put Gaga in the same ranks as Justin Timberlake who recently did double duty on the show in one of the better episodes, as well as Justin Bieber, who was reportedly a good sport. A rep for NBC refused to comment on the reported lineup. Gaga has previously acted in small sketches on the show, including a digital short with Timberlake and Andy Samberg and a face off with Madonna as herself. She will also make her acting debut on the big screen next month in the purposeful B-movie ‘Machete Kills.’ She’s not going into this completely blind. Basically, the 39th season of the sketch comedy show is in for an interesting year. Even more so if Lindsay Lohan says yes to hosting for her sixth time.
