Photographer Has Been Taking Terrific Selfies For 12 Years
14 jul 2013 01:28
Here’s some fantastic inspiration to kick start your day. Photographer Jeff Harris has been embarking on a photographic project that has lasted 12 years. Each day he took a new portrait of himself and the world around him – but this isn’t just one giant ego trip. Whilst our social networks are flooded with endless ‘selfies’, Jeff has deliberately pushed himself to experience new environments, situations and emotions to ensure the photograph he took each day, was more interesting than the last. “I would make all these resolutions to keep a diary, but by February they would fizzle out. That’s when I realised I could make 5mins in a day to take a self portrait. I started in 1999 and a lot of the earlier shots were very repetitive and boring, but the longer I did it, the stronger my visual sense became. It’s one of those things the longer you do it, the harder it is to stop.” His unique & creative photographs have been featured in both Cancer Connections: Images of Hope and Courage Across Canada & Auto Focus: The Self-Portrait in Contemporary Photography He’s even put together a warm and genuine video, detailing the highs and lows of his story, his traumatic battle with cancer, how it’s changed him and what his future potentially holds. So next time you’re about to take a selfie, think of Jeff and how he might have taken it.

Filmmaker Captures His Terrifying Polar Bear Attack On Camera
14 jul 2013 01:27
Any documentary filmmaker likes to get up close and personal with their subjects, but Gordon Buchanan pushes the limits more than most. As part of his thrilling documentary The Polar Bear Family and Me he ventured into the arctic landscape, bravely locking himself inside a protective booth so he could capture never-before seen footage of polar bears in the wild. But during the middle of filming, the unthinkable happens. The hungry poplar bear suddenly turns her attention to him and his tiny capsule. What happens next is as chilling as it is extraordinary…

A Startling Look Inside California's Sex Doll Factory
14 jul 2013 01:18
There’s two trains of thought when it comes to sex dolls, they are either consider an unnatural (and some would say disturbing) alternative to a sexual partner, others consider them a source of comfort, companionship and even therapy for some of the societies most maligned individuals. But regardless of which side of the fence you sit on, real sex dolls just like any other commercial product (they cost around $6,000) are mass assembled along a factory line. That in itself, is somewhat of a dichotomy, knowing that an inanimate objected created in such a stark environment can then hold such influence and power within the human psyche. Gifted photographer Zackary Canepari was equally interested in the mystery and appeal of the Real Doll phenomena. That interest took him to Abyss Creations in San Marcos, California where he was allowed he access to the factory where the ‘girls’ themselves are created. His dark and brooding series ‘Love Machines’ uniquely captures a realm far removed from the inevitable suburban environments the dolls will finally call home. Through his lens & vision, he provides an evocative if disconcerting peak into an industry that is much about our most basic desires and needs, as it is about profit, enterprise and innovation. Warning: Some of the following photos may be considered NSFW.

A Series Of Futuristic And Hallucinatory Images Of Tokyo
14 jul 2013 01:16
You might not have realised this but Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is in fact the largest metropolitan area in the world. Within it’s bustling streets and neon skyscrapers you’ll find around 13.2million people living in 2,188 km². That makes Tokyo not only incredible crowded, but a city that has a constant frenetic energy to it. People are either heading home or going out, finishing work or starting their shift – there is no such concept as ‘downtime’ in a city which constantly caters to the routines and whims of its thriving residents. It’s that same sense of continuous movement that Japanese visual artist Makoto Sasaki captures in his series titled ‘Tokyo Layers’. Using long and moving exposures he conjures up these futuristic dream-like images – not dissimilar to something you’d expect to see in Blade Runner. You can experience more of his hallucinatory cityscapes via his official Flickr profile.

Bringing Baby Turtles to Sea
12 jul 2013 02:05
To protect newly hatched sea turtles, a group of volunteers came together and did something incredible. They formed a human wall around the nest; the corridor they created led directly into the ocean. Because baby sea turtles are easy prey for birds and other predators, this ensured their safe hatching and passage into the ocean. Sometimes, people can be so cool.

Spiderman Plays Basketball.... Amazing Spiderman 2
12 jul 2013 00:00

You don’t always need to feel embarrassed when a dude in a Lycra bodysuit schools you at streetball. If the schooling is done by The Professor, it’s totally acceptable to get trounced on the court. This is streetball legend Greyson “The Professor” Boucher, giving out some lessons on how to play b-ball with your entire head wrapped in a Spider-Man mask. Step one seems to be move your feet around a lot, and do it really fast. Step two is maybe something like bounce the ball. Step three is make the ball go into the hoop? We don’t really “do” sports.

The Wolverine Has Bone Claws And The Viper Goes Nihilist In New Videos
11 jul 2013 16:44
Just a day after that funeral fight scene, Fox has released a third clip and several character featurettes from James Mangold’s The Wolverine. The clip is likely the first scene of the film, taking place during Wolverine’s internment in a POW camp during World War II, back when he only had bone claws and mutant healing. The second video below is a featurette on Svetlana Khodchenkova’s Viper character, who calls herself “a chemist, a nihilist, a capitalist, a mutation, a viper.” Nihilists, Donny! Then we have a video about Yukio, played by Rila Fukushima. The final two videos are featurettes on Harada (The Silver Samurai) and Logan. Will Yun Lee plays The Silver Samurai and talks about his character’s use of a bow and arrow and his parkour skills. Because of course there’s a guy with a bow and arrow who does parkour. Fox must have got the same memo about archery and parkour that every studio apparently received.

Watch The 'Skinny Dipping With Sharks' Clip From 'Naked & Afraid'
11 jul 2013 16:44
This is a preview clip from Sunday’s episode of the perfectly named Discovery Channel show Naked & Afraid. The clip is titled “Skinny Dipping With Sharks,” and it features two “primitive survivalists” named Clint and Laura who have been sent to a remote beach in Panama. We really need to talk about it. Let’s get the obvious issue out of the way first: This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard. Skinny dipping in the ocean and swimming with sharks are bad enough ideas on their own, so combining them is just piling dangerous on top of stupid. You have all sorts of orifices and dangly parts that are usually covered up by a bathing suit. You don’t want scary ocean things to happen to them. I mean, this thing lives in the ocean, for God’s sake. That is not something that should have unfettered access to very sensitive areas of your body. And let’s say a shark attacks you and you somehow survive. Do you really want to be in a position where you need to be rescued while naked? No. No you do not. Never do this. Promise me. And in addition to being a terrible idea, this clip is false advertising on a couple levels. First of all, THERE ARE NO SHARKS. Yes, they show some B-roll from Shark Week in the beginning and have someone say “this area is known for sharks” or whatever, but there’s not a single one in sight the whole time they’re out there. Titling this clip “Skinny Dipping With Sharks” is kind of like saying “I went grocery shopping with a murderer” because one guy in your town killed someone a few years ago. The show is already called Naked & Afraid. There’s no need to gild the lily. And speaking of that name, here’s another small issue: One contestant, Laura, is naked but not afraid, and the other contestant, Clint, is afraid but not totally naked. Unless Discovery means the title the way TNT means Franklin & Bash or Rizzoli & Isles (“That’s it, Naked and Afraid! I’m holding you both in contempt!”), this episode doesn’t appear to live up to its promise, at least in this clip. But mostly I wanted to bring this clip to your attention because Clint is my spirit animal. He wants no part of any of this. After making a spear and declaring that he and Laura are going into the ocean to try to find food, he proceeds to say the following things: “I’m not a swimmer and I’m freaked out by everything having to do with the ocean. And there’s definitely sharks in the area, and I’m outta here,” “I’m bailing, Laura. Forget this,” “I’m not in the business of going after big stuff than can hurt me,” and “I wanna get the hell outta here.” And sure enough, he does get the hell outta there and haul ass back to dry land, leaving his female partner to continue setting up lobster traps by herself, butt-naked in supposedly shark-infested waters. I feel you, Clint. I feel you.

LeBron James Rapped! AND It wasn't terrible.
11 jul 2013 16:40
Further establishing himself among the ranks of other NBA players, both great and meaningless, who have turned to rapping as a second or third career, LeBron James posted two short clips of his new rap effort to Instagram video yesterday. And, like any amateur rapper before him, he just borrowed someone else’s beats and laid his own lyrics over it, before Tweeting it out to all of his fans and yes men. I get it, though. He’s the best basketball player in the world, one of the best to ever play the game, and he’s in position to win a third-straight NBA title and yet another MVP award next season, so he can do whatever the hell he wants. But if I could play superstar whisperer for a moment, I’d like to recommend that he try doing whatever he wants that so many people before him haven’t already done and sucked at so spectacularly. Looking at you, Kobe Bryant. This is just another disappointing cliché from the guy who should be anything but. Next up: Space Jam 2: Better Than Michael Jordan In Space Jam.

Charlie Hunnam's Real Life Accent Is Officially A Trainwreck
11 jul 2013 16:38
As someone who watched every single episode of Judd Apatow’s short-lived Undeclared in real time I am consistently fascinated by the acting career of Charlie Hunnam. First it was recognizing him in films like Cold Mountain and Children of Men. Then after multiple first season Sons of Anarchy promos I finally put together it was the same guy portraying what soon would become UPROXX’s favorite love-to-hate bro-walking, nostril-flaring Hamlet of the MC: Jax Teller. And NOW it’s Hunnam’s impending jump to summer blockbuster sci-fi/action star in Pacific Rim that has me fascinated (don’t get me started on the Ron Perlman-FX-Charlie Day connection). Not a bad career arc for the pretty-faced British kid who was billed under Jay Baruchel on a show that everyone forgets about thanks to Freaks and Geeks. But none of this will ever fascinate me as much as the dude’s real life accent. From the few interviews I’ve seen it’s been all over the place for years, but last night on Conan it reached peak convolutedness. Like many British actors before him (see: Bale, Christian) years of living in the States and constantly using American accents in his work has turned his speech pattern into this weird indecipherable amalgam of all influences. In the clip below where he describes going head-to-head with multiple home burglars (lol, wut?) he goes in and out of Jax Teller, Nicholas Nickelby, and west coast dock worker effortlessly. It’s so odd and mesmerizing it’s enough to make you not notice how peculiar an interview it is for a guy promoting his summer blockbuster.
