Retro Propaganda Posters From Russia's Space Program
12 apr 2013 12:14
It’s crazy to think that these days your trusty Smartphone is vastly more technologically advanced and powerful than the equipment was planning to propel Russian astronauts into space back in 1958-1963. But back then, such a feat was considered to be the very peak of human innovation & enterprise – we had worked out how to leave our planet, but now rather paradoxically we have millions of devices that keep us all more connected within it. Below are some retro posters from the Soviet military, designed to drum up public support for the space program, blatant propaganda has rarely looked so stylish – block fonts, powerful imagery and bold colours designed to make the impossible seem possible. It worked too. Over 60 years the Soviet space program was responsible for a number of pioneering accomplishments in space flight, many of which are still referenced and celebrated today. Those include the very first intercontinental ballistic missile (1957), space satellite (Sputnik-1), animal in space (a dog called Laika on Sputnik 2), human in space (the world famous cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on Vostok 1) and obviously first Moon impact (Luna 2). We’ve tried out best to translate their phrases and call to actions, but if we’re way off the mark let us know in the comments below!

This Incredibly Cool Chromatic Typewriter Types Out Art
12 apr 2013 12:12
It’s odd concept to grasp, but imagine being able to physically “type” out an artwork…. Well, it’s not that far from reality, thanks to conceptual artist Tyree Callahan. He’s the ingenious individual behind the Chromatic Typewriter, an artwork that began when decided to pull apart a classic 1937 Underwood Standard typewriter, replacing its trusty letters and well-worn keys with colour palettes. For each letter of the alphabet, he allocated a specific hue – the theory is that by tapping them in various combinations, the ‘writer’ can create some truly vivid and peculiar art. So WOULD it actually be possible to actually type out your own art rather than painting by hand? The truth is, sort of.

Meet NYC's Most Imaginative Barista Turned Coffee Artist
12 apr 2013 12:08
As New York barista Mike Breach demonstrates, there’s more to making a good coffee than the perfect blend of its ingredients. Unlike the majority of his peers, Breach is unique in that he gives his customers not only a sharp caffeine hit, but also a self-destructive piece of art as well. After spending hours practicing when the shop was shut behind closed doors, he’s finally perfected the art of crafting miniature drawings into the coffee foam itself.

The World's Favourite Cities Plunged Into Darkness
12 apr 2013 12:06
Every major capital city suffers from light pollution, even in the depths of the night, total darkness rarely enters the streets – despite the best attempts of Earth Hour. That’s why we’re huge fans of the photographic series ”Villes Eteintes” (translation: Darkened Cities) by French visual artist Thierry Cohen. Through his work, he’s given us all a glimpse at what cities like would look like if plunged into utter darkness. But how did he achieve such feats? It wasn’t easy. He actually noted down the precise latitude and angle of each individual photograph of the city, then set up his camera in an area on the exact same latitude & angle free from light pollution. As the world rotates on its axis, he was able to shoot the night sky, those very same stars and clouds that would have been visible above each city that same evening. By separating the two, he was able to filter out the light from the city itself. These aren’t digitally altered with the intent of forming dream-like landscapes, but pieced together to capture a sleeping city as it truly should be witnessed. All images © Thierry Cohen

Fire-Breathing Dragon Bridge in Vietnam

The coolest bridge ever! On March 29 officials in Da Nang, Vietnam unveiled the Dragon Bridge, a dragon-shaped steel bridge that is complete with a fire-breathing head. The bridge’s 1,864-foot-long continuous steel arch doubles as the body of the dragon, with the tail at one entrance to the bridge and the head at the other. At night, the body is lit by more than 2,500 LED lights, and on special occasions, the fearsome dragon head releases giant plumes of fire or jets of water.

The Russian City Being 'Eaten Alive'.
12 apr 2013 07:05

Citizens of Samara, in south east Russia, live in fear of the ground literally disappearing beneath them after huge sinkholes have started to appear all over their city, leaving devastation in their wake. The sinkholes, some large enough to swallow an entire truck, are believed to have been caused by ground subsidence. It is thought the holes have been caused as ice thaws and melts into the ground, with the excess water causing soil decay underneath Samara's roads.

To create the renderings, Lamm digitally manipulated stock photos using data from sea level rise maps. These so-called 'street entrepreneurs' roaming Times Square are not like the familiar children's characters we've come to love. A string of arrests in the last few months has brought unwelcome attention to the growing number of people who make a living by donning character outfits, and charging tourists a few dollars to pose with them in photos.

Disney GAME OF THRONES - Princess Daenerys

If you’d like a new Disney Princess sooner rather than later, here’s Daenerys Targaryen from ‘Game of Thrones‘ in the role. It’s perfect if you want to like ‘Game of Thrones,’ but can’t stand all the sex, violence and not singing. The video features Evelina Barry as Daenerys and Peter Hollens as Jorah Mormont, although Elizabeth Oldak actually provides the singing voice for Daenerys. Yup — looks like a real C+C Music factory situation is going on here. We think we can forgive them, though. Mostly for that shot of the adorable sea lion just chilling on a rock. Sea lions are clearly the new dragons.

The Best Of The You Had One Job Meme
10 apr 2013 15:35
The reason I love "Go home, you're drunk" so much is because you can regularly work it into your everyday interactions and even if someone is in no way familiar with the meme, it still works, and you find yourself doubly satisfied because that person thinks you're extra clever and you'll never correct them. This option is far superior to when I tell people "Ain't nobody got time for that," and then spend the next five minutes explaining why it's funny and then forcefully make them watch Sweet Brown. It gets awkward. I really need to stop doing this. Enter: You Had One Job. It started gaining traction a little over a year ago thanks to the above credits screengrab showing up on r/funny with the title, "ONE JOB PHIL. YOU HAD ONE JOB." If you need an explanation as to why it's funny you're in the wrong place, as it only adds to Jurassic Park's already impressive internet legacy. So here's a healthy collection of the finest "You had one job!" images the world wide web has to offer so you'll be well versed and prepared the next time one of your relatives/co-workers/cellmates f*cks up even the simplest of tasks.

The Best Of The I Also Like To Live Dangerously Meme
10 apr 2013 15:34
The original Austin Powers is one of those rare super successful '90s comedies that still holds up -- for the most part -- today, and maybe that's why I've enjoyed the recent resurgence of the forever classic "I also like to live dangerously" bit. Yes, boiled down this meme is pretty much just another take on "Some Men Want to Watch the World Burn" and "We've Got A Badass Over Here," and while I love Michael Caine and NdGT, their versions aren't derived from a iconic scene featuring The Soup Nazi as a blackjack dealer. It all started a few months back when one clever Redditor shared their thoughts on watching someone do math with a pen and not long after that the macro got going full steam. The rest is recent internet history. There are now literally a thousand you can sift through. I -- of course -- have gathered a handful of the truly inspired ones here. Best of luck coming up with the work-specific version you'll be interoffice emailing later today.
