Just like photographer Traer Scott and her heartbreaking portraits of shelter dogs, artist Mark Barone is trying to bring some much needed attention to the neglected animals in shelters. After learning that 5,500 shelter dogs are killed every day in the United States, he decided to paint 5,500 portraits of actual shelter dogs with names and the date that they were killed. Now two years into the project, Barone has painted more than 3,500 portraits which, for any dog lover, are incredibly hard to look at.

Though we've seen a lot of dog portraits in our time these might just take the cake as the most creative ever. Ron Schmidt is the person behind the company Loose Leashes, an online shop where he sells funny prints of our furry friends in wonderfully witty scenarios. Dog person or not, you can't help but fall in love with these photos. As he told Dogster, “All the images represent the freedom that a dog would have without someone holding its leash. These are the things dogs would do if no one was around and they had absolute freedom.” Though his past experience is in fashion and celebrity photography, Schmidt found his true calling by accident. After branching out on his own to pursue commercial photography, he found his niche when, one day, he decided to design a creative Christmas card for his family, friends and clients. Featuring his yellow lab Indy, the card didn't just show her pose in a traditional way, he had her carry a tree on her back. "It was a fun, conceptual image that was a big hit with everyone who saw it. Since I love dogs and photography, this worked out really well.”

New York-based photographer Paul Nathan took these at a number of high-profile grooming competitions for a new book.

Duffy is an Irish Terrier who has battled a bevy of health issues–including one, diabetes, that even made him lose his sight. Luckily for Duffy, he was rescued by a loving family that could provide him with the care he needs. After medication helped stabilize his diabetes, the precious pup became eligible to undergo a sight-saving eye surgery.

Records show the dog arrived at the shelter on Aug. 19 after being dropped off by its owner, who Blankenship said was moving and could no longer care for it. The animal was cut and bloody after being struck by a car and a pad on its left rear foot was missing. Blankenship tried to find a rescue home through social media, but no one stepped up to adopt. So the dog's scheduled date with death arrived on Sept. 10.

Bizarre images have emerged of a woman taking a man for a walk on a dog leash across a road in China. The pair were spotted on September 9 in Fuzhou, China's Fujian province. Police had to be called to deal with the issue as the pair were holding up traffic and causing traffic jams.

It’s the most rewarding work a dog lover can do, and they certainly do their best at providing love and care for these animals.

Just like New Year’s, July 4 isn’t exactly a holiday for most pups. In fact, fireworks and other loud noises can even make it a nightmare. And, while our family furballs have the commodity of hiding under the bed, shelter dogs aren’t so lucky. However, one shelter came up with a brilliant idea to help these homeless pups relax through the blasting holiday.

Two dogs have been caught on camera sacrificing their lives to stop a deadly cobra getting into the house while a baby slept. The one-year-old girl called Skye was sleeping in the house in Kidapawan City, the Philippines, when the deadly snake entered the front garden last Friday. Dogs Moxie and Miley immediately launched attack against the venomous cobra.

As sad as it may sound, our canine friends are just temporary visitors in our lives – however, we are usually their whole life. The least we can do during our pets’ last moments is stay with them, making sure that when their time comes, they know they were part of the family. saying goodbye to your dog can be a heartbreaking experience not everyone can handle. That’s just one of the reasons why some old or terminally ill pets get abandoned.

Much like little kids, your pets can get quite curious too – as was the case with these two adorable French bulldogs who snuck into a cupboard and managed to cover themselves head-to-toe in green food coloring, essentially turning themselves into tiny Incredible Hulks.
