Best Of The 80s Don Draper Mad Men Parody Twitter Account
09 may 2013 13:55
Parody Twitter accounts are SO 2010. I’m well aware. Nowadays they pop up after every semi-interesting current event and it takes something of Modern Seinfeld or Florida Man proportions to catch our collective attention. That’s actually a good thing, because when a truly moderately brilliant one comes along we can celebrate it as the exception that proves the rule. So without further ado, I present “80′s Don Draper” by Onion contributor John McNamee. There will be some debate over apostrophe placement (maybe he’s possessed by the ’80s?), but if you’re not immediately won over by the profile imagery alone, I have nothing for you. Oh wait, I do. I have a handful of the best nostalgia-meets-formula tweets the account has shot out in its week of existence. Noid references will never not work on me.

‘Spagging’ Makes Pouty Faces Tolerable and Hilarious
09 may 2013 19:38
The “duck face.” It’s an epidemic across all forms of social media, and why it exists, we haven’t the slightest clue. You know what we’re talking about– that ultra pouty, furrowed brows, I’ve-got-’tude-right-now-and-you-can’t-handle-it sort of expression. And yes, we’ve been guilty of doing it maybe once or twice in 2007. Whatever. But whether you’re a fan or a facial-pouting hater, we think you’ll enjoy the versions we recently discovered. Ladies and gents, say hello to ‘spagging’. A Photoshop genius recently took to Imgur and shared the greatest improvements of said duck face. Basically, the user made everyone look like they’re slurping up a piece of spaghetti. Again, genius. See what we mean below.

Conker's Bad Fur Day: Squirrel Vivisection And Pikachu Beating
10 may 2013 00:38
Conker’s Bad Fur Day is a pretty edgy game — kind of shockingly so considering it was funded by Nintendo and released back in 2001. That said, just because countless dick jokes and a giant singing poop monster made it through to the final product, doesn’t mean a lot of other stuff didn’t hit the cutting room floor. An uncensored beta version of Conker just popped up online, and folks are discovering it contains all sorts of interesting cut content, and it’s not exactly the stuff you might expect (more poop, dick and boob jokes). One of the cut scenes features a rather disturbing vivisection of another non-Conker squirrel. Another (very unpolished) scene involves Pikachu taking a beating from a mobster. Gee, wonder why that idea was shot down?

‘Melinda Brown Duncan Is The New Charles Ramsey,’ Says Idiots
10 may 2013 00:47
Remember Antoine Dodson’s Internet explosion? Of course you do. And then right afterwards we had Sweet Brown and the guy who lost his cheeseburger. Why? Because stations were essentially going out looking for the craziest-looking people they could find and get a million YouTube views as if that’d make me want to tune into the news in Des Moines or wherever. Well, it’s started up again. This journalistic blaxploitation has reared its ugly head now that Charles Ramsey is more famous for his perm than the fact he saved a few lives. The first big video comes out of Detroit where a news station tracked down this woman – Melinda Brown Duncan – and let her rant about whatever the hell she wanted to talk about for a minute. Of course, if this were a pre-YouTube era, the footage would have landed on the cutting-room floor. But in an attempt to get YouTube views, she got her say on the air. And now outlets are calling her the next Ramsey Brown because Black people. Obviously. So get ready for the auto tune videos, laughs and good times. I’ll just kick back, watch Amos N’ Andy and thank goodness we don’t live in those times anymore. Whew.

Watch The Sheen Bros Beat Michael Jordan In A Basketball Challenge
10 may 2013 00:52
If Obama had an emergency meeting with Congress and initiated a Youtube tax today, I wouldn’t object because YouTube is doing God’s work by providing us with videos like this one. The good folks at Grantland dug up this video of Michael Jordan in a basketball challenge against Martin Sheen and his up-and-comer son Charlie. The video is from 1988 and you can tell it’s old by the fact MJ isn’t wearing his JNCO jeans and Charlie isn’t backstroking Scrooge McDuck style in coke and Hep B. In the video, Jordan tries to beat the Sheens in a three-part competition where he sets ridiculous handicaps for himself (free throws with his eyes closed? Two on one to 10 with the Sheens spotted five points?) and actually loses. You just have to imagine His Airness was secretly fuming over the fact he lost. If he didn’t immediately challenge them after cameras stopped rolling, he may still hold a grudge against the Sheens to this day. In fact, Jordan was so angry about losing that he vowed if he ever did any work with one of the Sheens he’d wear a Hitler mustache and make everyone go along with it. You go, MJ. You always win.

Another Harlem Shake Video Ends In Flames
10 may 2013 00:53
Like any good meme, the Harlem Shake was old before it even had a chance to be young, probably because of the fact that the dance being performed in thousands upon thousands of videos was not actually the Harlem Shake. But a little thing like accuracy has never stopped the Internet from creating something and then exploiting and milking it into complete nothingness until it’s nothing but an email that your mom will send to you in eight months. And so we thought that we had seen the end of the Harlem Shake several weeks ago when one attempt at this zany fad resulted in a person falling into a massive campfire. Alas, the memo hasn’t made the full rounds, as we have a new Harlem Shake video on YouTube, and it ends rather similarly to that last one.

The Best Of Veep's Selina Is Not Impressed #MemeMaam Meme

Veep went full internet on Sunday night. And it was glorious. They didn't simply quit with a brief Reddit and Tumblr mention, no. They created their own "Selina Meyer is not impressed" meme and closed the credits with the Tumblr dashboard. FULL INTERNET. I hear CBS is planning do to the same thing with this week's Mike & Molly. HBO's efforts have of course not gone unnoticed on the world wide web. Tumblr has been especially flattered by this exchange:

Grumpy Cat Had An Art Show Once. It Wasn't Awful.
10 may 2013 01:00
Last year Grumpy Cat (AKA Tardar Sauce) won us over with her cuddly curmudgeonliness. This little Ron Swanson in the form of a snowshoe cat became even more popular than we could have imagined, justifying a second meme watch filled with fan art and photoshops. But the fan dedication doesn't end there. Now an arts center put together The Grumpy Cat Art Project to raise money for a children's playground. The Lowe Mill Arts and Entertainment center in Huntsville, Alabama, collected Grumpy Cat art by over 30 artists in residence at Lowe Mill, the largest arts center in the Southeast US. "Art can elevate even the silliest subject," says Dustin Timbrook, one of the event's organizers. Grumpy Cat could use some elevation; have you seen how stumpy her cute little legs are? Well, you can see her legs in this GIF, which was also Grumpy Cat's response to whether or not she'll check out the show's opening on May 31st.

Abercrombie And Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries Reminded He's Ugly By Internet
10 may 2013 14:32
Over the last twenty-four hours or so Abercrombie and Fitch CEO Mike Jeffries has come under fire thanks to new assertions from retail analyst and author Robin Lewis that Jeffries “doesn’t want larger people shopping in his store, he wants thin and beautiful people.” This has led to the internet digging up a less-than-flattering Salon article on Jeffries from 2006, where the sixty-plus year-old CEO of the apparel company seemingly hellbent on giving teenagers body dysmorphia says “dude” a lot and makes multiple rather non-PC statements on personal attractiveness. Oh, and did I mention that Jeffries looks like a sixty year-old guy trying to look like an Abercrombie model? Well, Reddit has certainly taken notice, and in a somewhat misguided (classic Reddit) attempt to right the wrongs perpetrated against less conventionally attractive retail shoppers everywhere, they want to point out to the world just what a weird-looking freak/hypocrite Mike Jeffries is. Here are some of the most popular examples…

David Foster Wallace's 'This Is Water' Speech In The Form Of A Film
10 may 2013 14:40
It’s almost cliche at this point for a person running a blog or a website to post anything related to David Foster Wallace — almost akin to a college English major going around quoting The Cather in the Rye at every turn — but this is too good not to post. If you’re unfamiliar with Wallace’s “This Is Water” speech, it’s one he gave in 2005 at the commencement ceremony at Kenyon College in Ohio. It’s a call on graduates to live a compassionate life and it touched on such things as “the difficulty of empathy,” “the importance of being well adjusted,” and “the essential lonesomeness of adult life.” A brother and sister film-making team who work under the moniker “The Glossary” made the video embedded above because, in their words, Wallace’s speech was “some of the best life advice we’ve ever come across, and perhaps the most simple and elegant explanation of the real value of education.” Enjoy.

The Creator Of QWOP Has Turned Chess Into A Twitch Game
10 may 2013 15:07
Chess is the game of kings, beloved by self-styled smart people and old guys in parks the world over. But it’s also a sedate game. Leave it to Bennett Foddy, the game designer who elevated trolling to an art form with QWOP, to turn it into something so fast you’d need amphetamines to follow it. The rules are simple: Each of the sixteen players takes control of a pawn, and then you play chess. You lose your pawn, you jump into another piece and keep going. It’s… frantic. Here’s the full video explaining the game, or you can just click this link to see the game in action: http://www.foddy.net/

If you’re having a hard time coming up with a nice thing to say to your mom, because you want to say something nice, but you don’t want to sound too sincere because GROSS people shouldn’t share their feelings like that, you should watch this video from Rhett and Link. Actually, let’s just be nice to moms everyday, or are we going to have to make you watch the childbirth video from health class again? Here a couple of their more choice compliments, in our opinion: “Yo mama’s so full of joy and cheer, she put the detergent industry out of business.” “Yo mama’s so intelligent that she makes me feel inferior when I don’t use words good.” “Yo mama’s so enjoyable she like a hug wrapped in laughter wrapped in a magic show wrapped in a delicious chicken burrito.” Awww. This Gigantic Face Represents Women's Rights In Holland

Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada is world renowned for his terrestrial artworks. Recently collaborated with Mama Cash (a feminist foundation based in the Netherlands) to create a giantic portrait of a female face in Zeeburgereiland, Amsterdam. “Using fertile soil to create this piece becomes a metaphor for what can come forth if the vision of these women is respected and allowed to bring about change.” The area itself is slightly larger than two football fields, such was the magnitifue of the work, Jorge enlisted the help of 80 volunteers to help him build and arrange the face. In doing so they powered through 7 metric tons of straw, a staggering 5 miles of rope, over 1,000 wooden poples and 5,300 cubic feet of soil to transform Jorge‘s vision into reality.

Recap! 'Community' Season 4 Finale, 'The Office' GIFs
13 may 2013 01:42
So you watched your favorite shows this weekend. Particularly, You saw the boring new 'Community' and the redundant new episode of 'The Office'. 'Community' is clearly out of ideas. Or, perhaps more accurately, the ideas that it does have left are such fan service that they're offensive. One of season four's biggest problems was its lack of saying anything new about the characters; the same jokes were used over and over again, as were the plots, with "Finality" wanting to please us so badly that I even felt embarrassed for Chevy Chase when he appeared wrapped in an outfit seemingly made of snakeskin and gym mats. It beat us over the head with references to paintball, darkest timelines, and Inspector Spacetimes; we like those things, but we also want more than that. And the "more" in "Finality" made no sense: Jeff dreaming of Evil Abed? The lack of City College after last week's cliffhanger? THE MATRIX PARODIES? For a brief moment, it even made me retroactively hate "Remedial Chaos Theory," my favorite episode of the entire show. Which brings me to the don't: I'm sad that this could be our final memory of one of the most inventive, occasionally brilliant sitcoms ever.

Hear Outerspace Cover Of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity'

Taking the Flight of the Conchords’ premise to its inevitable (and literal) conclusion, Commander Chris Hadfield recorded a cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” aboard the International Space Station and uploaded it to YouTube earlier today. (Which is like seven years ago in space time, I think.) The song, from the Bowie album of the same name, is actually very depressing, with the ill-fated Major Tom cutting off communication from Earth and floating in space. Rest assured, though, that although this is Hadfield’s last transmission aboard the ISS, that’s only because he’s handing the reigns over to Commander Pavel Vinogradov.

First Taste Shows Kids Eating Gross Foods

May 10-12, 2013 will henceforth be known as the weekend we all Charleston’d down to the cineplex: My sources’ latest estimates for the 3D tentpole [The Great Gatsby] are $19.4M for Thursday/Friday, and -6% for $18M Saturday. Hollywood is expecting an overperforming $52M first weekend for the romantic drama co-financed by Village Roadshow and based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 classic novel. (Via) Gatsby: Based on the Novel “Daisy Pouts” by Fitz-G. Vince may not have cared for the film, but a surprising number of people did; that $52 million is far higher than anyone expected it to make, and it’s certainly more successful than 1974′s Gatsby, starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. You know what that movie was missing? Filter songs. The video below, which envisions the old Gatsby as the new Gatz, fixes that problem.
