These Sneakers Have A Built-in Tent
07 aug 2013 12:04
If you can keep a house in your pocket, why not store a tent in your sneakers? The Sibling Collective created a pair of sneakers called Walking Shelter that store a simple tent in mesh netting attached to the back. While the concept is functional, it’s hard to imagine that people would actually wear these things… unless sneakers doubling as storage becomes a new footwear trend. “Oh, you got a tent in your sneakers. That’s cool. I got a blow up yacht in mine.”

Cute Cat-Shaped Kindergarten
07 aug 2013 12:05
This is Kindergarten Wolfartsweier, a school designed by Tomi Ungerer and d’Ayla-Suzan Yöndel in Karlsruhe, Germany. But it isn’t any old stinking school that looks like prison for learning. This school is shaped like a cat. It’s even got a slide as a tail! I bet it’s a real fun place to go. Except when kitty gets a hairball. Yeah, definitely don’t want to be around for that. Math class is hard enough without having to listen to a cat hacking the whole time. And here you thought nails on a chalkboard was bad!

The Passage of Time Shown in Layered Collages by Fong Qi Wei
07 aug 2013 12:44
The beauty of photography, in its essence, is conveyed by capturing a moment in time and freezing it out of its context. Singapore-based photographer Fong Qi Wei, however, uses photography to show the passage of time. In his time lapse series called ‘Time is a Dimension’, Fong doesn’t use a typical long exposure trick. He captures the passing time by layering different photos of the same spot with clear edge lines of each frame. Each collage is digitally cut and created from pictures Fong takes within 2 to to 4 hours. Fong usually works at sunrise or sunset, as the light and color palettes are most varied at those times.

Signs for the Homeless is an art project started by artists Kenji Nakayama and Christopher Hope in an effort to raise awareness about poverty and homelessness around the Boston area. The basic concept behind the ongoing project is that the two artists approach homeless people on the streets who are holding signs and propose an exchange. As their tag line states: "A sign in exchange for donations and a hand painted sign." Essentially, Nakayama and Hope offer $10 and create hand painted signs for each person they come across.

Quirky Illustrations with Funny Messages
07 aug 2013 12:54
Minneapolis-based graphic designer Phil Jones, aka murraymullet, creates playful illustrations of objects and pets that will leave you smiling. The quirky drawings give a voice to inanimate objects like a trash can, transforming the waste receptacle into a refined connoisseur exclaiming, "Everything you bring me is garbage." Even when Jones' characters aren't accompanied with a speech or thought bubble, there's a universal understanding of his funny message. A shocked and teary orange kissing an equally disturbed tube of toothpaste speaks volumes as we all know the wretched taste of their combination after brushing one's teeth.

Here's What Happens When You Mix Soap, Oil & Ink Together
07 aug 2013 12:58
Whilst you use ink in your stationary, oil for your bike and soap to wash yourself everyday, its rare that all three liquids come into contact with one another. What would happen if they did? Would blending ink, soap and oil produce something similar? Or would they just cancel each other out into a soapy sludge? That’s precisely what Russian visual artist Ruslan Khasanov was compelled to find out and so he decided to embark on a series of fun experiments to test his theory. His inspirations came whilst cooking one night, when he noticed the mixture of soy sauce and oil separating out into small black beads in his dish. Taking the same logic, he mixed different quantities of soap, oil and ink together and filmed the results. Amazingly, his unique concoction produced a vivid blend of yellows, magenta, whites and blues – all completely experimental and all mesmerising to look at.

10 Funny Scenes From Serious TV Dramas: Breaking Bad
07 aug 2013 19:42
"OK, so, I've got this idea for a show. Breaking Bad. It's about a man named Walter White. He's a chemistry teacher who has cancer and oh yeah, he's played by the dad from Malcolm in the Middle. Anyway, cancer. His former co-workers offer to pay for his medical bills, but he refuses and instead makes ice-blue meth in New Mexico in an RV with a slacker, drug-addicted student of his. Cancer, chemistry, meth, what am I missing? That's right: Walter becomes more and more evil, killing people who get in his way, and becoming a monster at home to his wife, who's looking out for the well being of their teenage kid with cerebral palsy. But don't worry: it's going to be hilarious." I don't know how Vince Gilligan pitched Breaking Bad to AMC, but thank god he did, and thank Heisenberg they picked it up. Many consider it to be the greatest TV drama of all-time, or at least in the top-three with The Wire and The Sopranos, but that's not giving it nearly enough comedic credit. Breaking Bad is really, really funny, funnier than most actual sitcoms. With the premiere right around the corner (in case you hadn't heard), let's take a look at some of the funniest moments from 10 SERIOUS TV DRAMAS, including Breaking Bad.

TRENDING NEWS! George Takei Wants The 2014 Winter Olympics To Be Moved
07 aug 2013 19:45
George Takei, who is also quite the scribe in matters of gay rights, is now supporting a petition on change.org that has more than 59,000 signatures. Russia “intends to enforce its laws against visiting LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) athletes, trainers and fans, meaning anyone even so much as waving a rainbow flag (and I presume many men enthusiastically watching and dramatically commenting on figure skating) would be arrested, held for weeks and then deported,” he writes in a blog post last week. “Given this position, the (International Olympic Committee) must do the right thing, protect its athletes and the fans, and move the 2014 Winter Olympics out of Russia.” (Via Yahoo! Sports) Takei also addressed one of the major semantic issues involved in the idea of moving something as massive and expansive as the Olympics, and that’s finding a city or cities that have the proper facilities available at such short notice. After all, it’s not like moving your weekly kickball kegger from one backyard to another. Instead of Russia, Takei recommended Vancouver as a repeat destination, as the facilities from the 2010 Winter Olympics are probably still in decent condition. Of course, you’d also have to take into account the travel arrangements of thousands of athletes, coaches, trainers and family members, not to mention all of the fans already planning to go cheer their countries on. But I’m sure that airlines and hotels will accommodate all of the changes. They usually seem pretty reasonable.

Watch This: This 'Horrific Bowling Accident' Isn't Really Horrific
07 aug 2013 19:46
A bowler named Troy Walker competed at the 2013 Luci Bonneau Doubles Charity Bowling Tournament in Houston over the weekend, and according to the very convenient video with announcers from a charity bowling tournament, he was the victim of a “horrific bowling accident!” So was his arm ripped off when he reached into the ball return to get his stuck ball? Did he wave his hand over the air blower only to realize that it was blowing out a flesh-eating bacteria? Did you he insert his fingers into the holes only to realize they were the eye sockets of his twin brother’s skull? No. He went to bowl his 12th-consecutive strike for a perfect game and for some unknown reason the rake arm came down and stopped his ball. Unfortunate? Yes. Horrific? No. Oh, and fake? I’m not sure, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all.

Arizona Man Using Humor To Find Woman Who Stole His Amazon Package
07 aug 2013 19:47
Phoenix resident Tim Lake travels a lot, so he very wisely installed some security cameras around his house to keep an eye on things for him when he’s out and about. The seemingly-paranoid tactic paid off recently, when Lake’s phone received a screen shot of a random woman at his door, and he realized that the bumbling blonde was actually stealing his Amazon package in broad daylight. While a lot of people might be pretty pissed that some woman would just jack their stuff like this, Lake is having a pretty darn good time trying to track down the culprit and humiliating her in the process. In an interview with Phoenix’s KPHO news, Lake pretended to cry over his stolen square ice cube tray, as he compared her appearance in the security footage to Dog the Bounty Hunter, before he read the hilarious flyer that he posted throughout his neighborhood. Oh, and of course he quoted Liam Neeson from Taken, because Tim Lake is awesome.

Tito Ortiz Showed Up On Last Night's Impact Wrestling
07 aug 2013 19:58
If there are two thing TNA Impact Wrestling loves, they’re: 1. Unnecessary mysteries 2. Past-their-expiration-date MMA guys Yesterday it was announced that UFC legend Tito Ortiz would be coming out of retirement to face Quinton “Rampage” Jackson at Bellator’s first pay-per-view event. Bellator’s TV show is “sister shows” with pro wrestling also-ran Impact Wrestling. When Rampage signed with Bellator he was on Impact within the week, so it makes sense that Tito would be announced for a fight and also show up there. Thank goodness Impact had just begun running a story about a mysterious bald man threatening to beat up wrestlers from the shadows! Yes, the August 1 Warnings mystery man who’d been threatening the wrestling organization for weeks turned out to be Tito Ortiz, and if the crowd reaction to Ortiz’s appearance is any indication, it was well worth the money. And by “well worth the money” I mean “thank goodness they fired the pregnant lady and all the injured wrestlers to make cap room for an old MMA guy who hasn’t fought since 2011 and only won one out of his last nine fights.” Awkward and embarrassing all around. Here’s the clip.

A Dead Shark Has Been Found On The New York City Subway

I’m not sure if you guys have heard this or not, but it’s SHARK WEEK. Yes, you heard that right, it’s SHARK WEEK. I know, I know — it’s crazy because no one is talking about the fact that it’s SHARK WEEK, right? Well, maybe they will now, because a dead shark has been found on an NYC subway train and we’re sure this is a total coincidence and has absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that it’s SHARK WEEK. Here’s what a tipster named “Mary M” told Gothamist about the dead shark that was found on a Queens-bound N train… “I board a car that’s not terribly full and as soon as I enter, a stench hits my nose. It’s not the typical urine/trash smell, it’s…fishy? I look down to the end of the car to see a dead shark on the floor. I think I stood there for a good minute just staring, thinking ‘Is this for real?! Oh come ON, NYC!’ One of my fellow passengers remarked ‘I’ve been riding the subway for 15 years, and this is the weirdest thing I’ve seen. And I’ve seen EVERYTHING.’ The train filled as we made our way to Astoria, every new passenger was getting excited about it. Once we got to Queensboro Plaza, an MTA employee made all of us move to another car.” And here’s a photo “Mary M took…

Vegetable Silverware Designs That Look Real Enough to Eat
08 aug 2013 11:57
Boring, white plastic silverware is old news to artist Qiyun Deng. Recently, the innovative product designer developed a collection of environmentally-friendly, but still disposable, silverware and serving bowl concepts that look just like everyday plants and vegetables. The series, entitled Graft, features objects constructed out of bioplastic PLA, a material pulled from renewable sources like vegetable fats and oils. Graft was produced as part of Deng's diploma project at the École cantonale d’art de Lausanne in Switzerland and it is strongly inspired by nature. The artist crafted forks, spoons, and knives that blend nature together with manmade objects that we use everyday. Although the shapes mimic vegetables, they are designed to properly function as utensils. The handle of the fork looks just like a stalk of celery and the handle of the spoon looks just like a carrot. Deng asks, "By waking both visual and haptic sensation it brings along a question: Will you throw them away easily?"

So THIS Is What Wi-Fi Actually Looks Like...
09 aug 2013 18:15
These days we take Wi-Fi for granted, this invisible energy field that keeps us all constantly connected wherever we are in the world. But do you know how it was initially created? It was actually the by-product of a fail research project conducted by one John O’Sullivan an Australian radioastronomer. At the time he was trying to detect exploding mini black holes the size of an atomic particle, but instead found a solution that made wireless LAN fast and reliable. Not a bad days work in the office I’m sure you’ll agree. But if we could see it, what would Wi-Fi actually look like? Thankfully Dr. Vogel a professor and former NASA employee teamed up with visual artist Nickolay Lamm to answer just that question. Dr. Vogel adds: Wi-Fi is an energy field that is transmitted as waves. The waves have a certain height, distance between them and travel at a certain speed. The distance between Wi-fFi waves is shorter than that of radio waves and longer than that of microwaves, giving wifi a unique transmission band that can’t be interrupted by other signals. Wi-Fi waves are about 3 to 5 inches from crest to crest. Below is the result of their unique collaboration, was it what you were expecting?

Unfortunate & Stupid Chinese Tattoos That Make No Sense
09 aug 2013 18:15
One of the key considerations in getting a tattoo, besides your motive and its symbolism is how it looks on your body. Both Arabic and more importantly Chinese characters are beautiful examples of typography, so it’s not that surprisingly that millions of people around the world choose to ink themselves with sequences of each. The trouble comes when you start using words in the wrong context. If you’re Russian and you get “BAG OF CHIPS” tattooed on your arm, simply because you like the way it looks, you can be sure that anyone who reads English will laugh at you incessantly and constantly ask you “Were you drunk when you got that?” Which brings us nicely onto the following collection of Chinese character tattoos. As aesthetically pleasing as they may be, to anyone who is able to read Chinese they are completely and utterly non-sensical. Take a walk around your local Chinatown and you can expect a serious case of WTF. So our advice, next time you’re thinking of getting a tattoo, go beyond the surface and make an effort to find out the context of what it means. If not, you could end up like these unfortunate souls….

A Powerful Photographic Account Of Life As A Gypsy
09 aug 2013 18:19
The English term ‘Gypsy’ encompasses a number of ethnic groups, in Europe they are predominantly known as the ‘Romani’ people, in India the Banjara, in Armenia the ‘Lom’ people and across Germany, Switzerland and France these nomadic families are sometimes called the ‘Yeniche’ people. Interestingly enough the term ‘Gypsy’ was originally spelt gypcian, short for Egipcien, many believe its roots lie somewhere amongst the rubbles of Middle English, French and Latin. Regardless of country or even origin, the one trait that binds this ethnic group together is their steadfast refusal to identify themselves with a particular territory or country. They have few traditions and no place to literally call home – a result of their ancestors also being nomadic. Their history is one of constant movement and change, tempered with a fierce belief in being free from any country and indeed its institutions. In America they are used as cheap entertainment in shows such as ‘My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding’ whereby the very worst elements of their culture have been provoked, exaggerated, edited and broadcast onto reality TV – but to stereotype the actions of a few, as representative of a much wider community would be incredibly narrow-minded.

Domino's Apologizes After Customer Compliments Their Pizza
09 aug 2013 18:22
Does Domino’s suffer from low self-esteem? It would seem so, if the Facebook posting below that has been going around the Web is any indication. It seems that a customer who actually purchased and enjoyed one of Domino’s lukewarm bread and cheese creations decided to, as everyone does once they’ve consumed foodstuffs nowadays, register their enjoyment on Facebook. The customer in question posted a missive about her love for Domino’s pan pizza on the company’s Facebook page which, if the kneejerk apology above is any indication, seems to be used solely to field consumer complaints. Does Domino’s have a spambot ready to reply to any messages, tags or likes with a swift apology for the gastrointestinal distress their product no doubt caused? After years of people calling their pizza “hot circles of garbage,” are they like an abused child who responds to anything — be it a compliment or a criticism — with beaten down remorse? That said, we don’t feel sorry for Domino’s. If anything, this is a good start. The fast food chain has done a few other things over the years that they should apologize for. Here are five things we’d like the Dominos ApologyBot5000 to answer for. 1. Recycling the same dough and cheese they use for pizza for everything from Cheesy Bread to those volcano shaped mounds of noodles and goo they call Pasta Bowls. 2. Releasing those ads a while back where they admitted their pizza is terrible and needed to be changed. You were fine serving slop for decades and we were fine with guiltily devouring it in college when we were hungover and couldn’t be bothered to walk down to the cafeteria for a bagel. That was the agreement, Domino’s.
