New 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' Blooper Reel (VIDEO AND GIFS)
31 jul 2013 13:00

Awhile back we posted a Star Trek bloopers compilation. Unfortunately that video was pulled, and we only have the GIFs below to remember them by. But on the bright side, Paramount has released a new blooper reel to promote the first Blu-ray release of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s fourth season. The Blu-ray is out tomorrow if you want to mount your furniture Riker-style and re-watch it. We get to peek at a few scenes going off the rails, and it’s great to see Patrick Stewart, Michael Dorn and company having a little fun back in the day. Considering how melodramatic the show could get at times, these clips are all the more surreal. [Blastr via The Mary Sue] Stay tuned all the way to the end to see our favorite part, Jonathan Frakes getting the church giggles

'Cop Selfies' Confirms The Sad Fact That Even Cops Take Selfies
30 jul 2013 17:27
Selfies. People who are not teenage girls do actually take them, sadly. Would John Wayne, the iconic American male, strike a pose in a mirror, whip out a smart phone and snap a photo of himself to send to someone? You know damn well he wouldn't! Which is what I find Cop Selfies -- a Tumblr devoted to, well, cop selfies -- a little heartbreaking. Cops aren't supposed to take selfies, dangit! Back in my day, the cops just did things like pop you for speeding in a school zone and help you unlock your car when you accidentally locked the keys inside. Now they're taking selfies? America is OVER! And here is some of the evidence...

The Earth breathes, and it is beautiful

Using NASA's latest high-resolution satellite imagery of Earth, datavisualization expert John Nelson has created a pair of captivating animations that track seasonal transformations on the blue marble we call home. "I downloaded the 12 cloud-free satellite imagery mosaics of Earth at each month of the year," he explains, "wrapped them into some fun projections, then stitched them together into a couple animated gifs." The end result is a pulsing visualization he calls "A Breathing Earth":

'Simpsons' Comic Book Guy Guide To Being Worst. Nerd. Ever.
24 jul 2013 18:02
Now that San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone for another year, it's time for us to look back and say: the hell was that? Comic-Con isn't without its charms — the TV and movie panels can occasionally be illuminating and funny, the costumes are a pleasant distraction, and there's, y'know, all those actual, honest-to-Jebus comics — but it's also maddening and smothering and comically over the top, without any sense of irony. And then there's the comic book guys, whom are the meaty sweaty arm pits of the Nerd world. Essentially, Nerd culture is made up of these people. We love them. But at the same time...they're really gross. A demonstration? Scroll down.

VIDEO: Patton Oswalt's First Acting Gig In A Student Loan Infomercial
24 jul 2013 18:00

A former comedian turned counselor JC Shakespeare uploaded a video to YouTube this weekend. In it, he and three other performers — including a 19-year-old Patton Oswalt — do stand-up as part of an infomercial on student loans in 1990. Shakespeare says, “This was my first paid gig as an actor, and perhaps it was for Patton as well. Patton had the tenacity and persistence to work his butt off (I didn’t), and I have immense respect for how far his talent and hard work have taken him.” Oswalt quickly confirmed what we could already tell: it was him. In a snazzy sweater vest, no less. He adds that it was his first acting gig, for which he was paid $300.

'47 Ronin' Is Basically 'Lord Of The Rings', But Japanese
24 jul 2013 17:54
Imagine, if you will, a movie about the Alamo that features a Bollywood actor with a steampunk missile launcher killing Mexican cyborg assassins, led by a ninja who’s really an alien. That’s pretty much what 47 Ronin is doing to a Japanese national legend, much to the amusement of the Japanese. It’s kind of a shame, actually, because this looks pretty good for what it is: A big-budget version of a high-fantasy wuxia movie, only with all the pretentious trappings Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made mandatory dumped in favor of CGI. OK, so it doesn’t look like a classic, but that said…

Jennifer Lawrence Fangirls Over Jeff Bridges: It’s AWESOME
24 jul 2013 16:56
Despite winning an Oscar earlier this year, Jennifer Lawrence still freaks out around other celebrities — this time when she ran into actor Jeff Bridges at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday (July 20). At around the 2:25 mark in the video, a nervous and breathless J-Law is pushed toward Bridges — who’s giving an on-camera interview — and runs away because she doesn’t want to intrude. But then Jeff sees her and wants to say hello, so the reporter invites her to ask the actor a question. (Way to think on your feet, reporter dude!) Lawrence obliges, but not without stumbling — verbally, not physically this time — and then goes all fangirl on the ‘Big Lebowski’ star. It’s nothing short of adorable.

What Happens When You Fire a Gun Underwater (in Slow Motion)
24 jul 2013 16:44
We’ve never actually wondered what would happen if you fired a gun underwater, but now that we can see it, obviously we’d really like to find out. Here the Slow Mo guys have set up their swimming pool to film firing a gun underwater at 27,000 frames per second. To give you an idea of how slowed down that is, the standard rate of frames per second in film is 24. So this is more than 1,000 times slower. Pretty cool, although we don’t recommend firing off a few rounds in your own pool.

More Incredible 3D Latte Art by Kazuki Yamamoto
24 jul 2013 13:45
Japanese artist Kazuki Yamamoto has got the Internet buzzing about his 3D latte art again – this time he’s back with a very impressive Salvador Dali-inspired foam sculpture. The latte foam in the cup is shaped as a melting clock in Dali’s The Persistence of Memory. The clock, however, is not the only new 3D latte artwork by Kazuki since the last time we featured him on our site. He has a very active twitter account with more than 110K visitors where he tweets his latest latte art creations. Kazuki serves this kind of coffee for the visitors of the Cafe10g in Osaka, Japan. 26-year-old artist became an Internet sensation after the world discovered his 3d coffee foam sculptures: besides rising up in their own cup, some of them even reach out for others. Before he developed this technique, Kazuki used to create some incredibly detailed flat artworks on the coffee foam, with his subjects varying from portraits of famous people to cartoon characters. The artist dreams of opening his own cafe in Tokyo one day – gotta admit, this business definitely sounds like his cup of tea… erm, coffee!

NEW! ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ Trailer
22 jul 2013 15:25
If Peeta and Katniss (given the hilarious mashup name Peeniss by fans) are your thing, there will be plenty of angst in the upcoming ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ film. But since there will also be a lip lock between Katniss and Gale (aka Kale), that should make the other half of the fandom happy. If you’re in that latter group, the brand new theatrical trailer has some Jennifer Lawrence on Liam Hemsworth action just for you. While at San Diego Comic-Con promoting the upcoming film on Saturday, July 20, Lawrence talked about a gross kiss between her and co-star Josh Hutcherson (warning: it contains some pretty unsexy bodily fluids) and discussed the wild parties the cast held while filming in Hawaii. “[They] were so weird,” Lawrence admitted. “Woody Harrelson in a cropped top was my favorite. He got really hot and wanted to borrow a shirt of mine because he wore a thermal and the only thing he could fit in was a baggy crop top.” “And the best part is nobody mentioned it! The whole party, like nobody said anything. They’re just like, ‘Yeah, Woody’s in a crop top.’ That was great.” Can you say “favorite new mental image”?

French illustrator Grégoire Guillemin has taken his love of superheros and added a bold new twist to the art form. His illustrative series titled ‘Secret Life of Heroes’literally pops out of the screen at you, not only because of his bold colour set but also because of the illustrations themselves… Batman and Robin get it on, Snow White kicks back with a cigarette, Wonder Woman seductively sucks on a banana and all whilst Catwoman indulges on some girl on girl action with Poison Ivy. Creative Celebrity Pizza Portraits by Domenico Crolla
09 jul 2013 12:30
Glasgow-based Italian chef Domenico Crolla both runs his restaurant Bella Napoli and creates celebrity pizza portraits. The restauranteur/artist uses nothing more than your basic pizza ingredients—dough as his canvas, tomato sauce and cheese to "paint" and play with negative space—to produce each of his well-crafted portraits. He puts his skilled hands to use to recreate the image of musicians, actors, and international fashion icons. Crolla's growing collection of portraits already feature classic icons like Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra as well as current pop stars like Rihanna and Beyoncé. Other well-known faces include fashion icons Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, and Karl Lagerfeld. Crolla has even thrown TV personality and chef Gordon Ramsey into the mix. The face that began the ongoing artistic adventure in the kitchen, though, is that of the late martial arts and action film superstar Bruce Lee. Following this pie, Crolla received a "thank you" note from Lee's daughter Shannon which encouraged him to pursue his artisan craft. He continues to do so today, especially after receiving countless messages of recognition and gratitude from many other celebrities.

World’s Best Father: Dave Engledow with Daughter Alice Bee
02 jul 2013 11:48
Remember Jason Lee and the crazy pictures of his beautiful daughters? Well, it seems that he’s got some serious competition fighting for the World’s Best Father award. Dave Engledow is creating probably the wackiest scrapbook ever showing himself and his daughter Alice Bee in highly precarious situations. The first picture of him holding Alice Bee like a football and pouring her milk into his coffee was never intended to turn into a series, but the fans on the Internet demanded otherwise after seeing it. The key item in the shot became the “World’s Best Father” mug, bought just last minute before taking the picture. Later the same mug was featured in nearly every shot and gave the name to the series. When he realized that the pictures were becoming increasingly popular on the Internet, Dave decided to publish a small-run 2012 calender. After it was swept from the stores, he is now set to release a larger run for 2013. His ultimate wish, however, is for his daughter to have something to treasure as years go by.

Light Up Your Party with Star Wars Alcohol!
28 jun 2013 11:20

In the 21st century, we have seen tremendous advances in the fields of science, mathematics, physics, astronomy, and social sciences. Just like Shakespeare is still releavant after decades of literature, Star wars has now become just as important. That's right, I said it! In order to function normally in society nowadays, it is impossible to go on with your life not having watched Star Wars. Why? Because in litereally every corner that you turn, there will always be a Star Wars reference. Because Star Wars is a metaphore for life. Because Star Wars represents Justice, Liberty, Happiness, Freedom, and thr triumph of good versus evil. That being said, you can also play various different drinking games while watching all six movies and get thoroughly wasted, and guess what? The best way to get wasted is with Star Wars alcohol.

Tiny Mechanical Insects Made of Watch Parts
28 jun 2013 11:18
Chicago-based artist Justin Gershenson-Gates, aka A Mechanical Mind, creates tiny steampunk insects by carefully soldering together gears, springs, and other watch parts. The mechanical bugs, many of which Gershenson-Gates can balance on just his pinky finger, are miniature, multi-legged creatures that each take the artist several hours to complete. Like a robotic army of creepy crawlers, the metallic mites invoke a sense of mechanical technology come to life. There's something altogether exciting, intriguing, and frightening about the collection that screams "science fiction horror film." You can hear their metallic little legs feverishly clicking as though they're scurrying across a room just by looking at them.
