2013 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest
11 jul 2013 14:02

In this cute video, made by comedian Kevin Maher, little kids attempt to undertake a Nathan’s-style hot dog eating contest in Coney Island. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), things don’t go so well. Unlike what happens when we let our nephew eat as many hot dogs as he could, none of these children ate eight hot dogs and then threw up. One of them does run away though. If you like the idea of hot dog eating contests, but the actual practice of eating sixty franks makes you question whether or not the human race even deserves to still be on planet Earth, this is the video for you.

Mr. Darcy from Pride and Prejudice
11 jul 2013 13:43

A sopping wet Colin Firth might be attractive to some, but an ENORMOUS, fiberglass sopping wet Colin Firth is attractive to nobody. In fact, some people are calling the giant statue of Firth as Mr. Darcy from ‘Pride and Prejudice’ “unsettling” and “kind of creepy.” The statue has been put in Serpentine lake in London’s Hyde Park to promote the launch of UKTV’s new Drama channel, which will air high-profile dramas from the UK, such as the 1995 adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ which inspired the statue. That’s right — the statue is inspired by the TV version of the book, since the scene itself wasn’t actually in Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice.’ Adding one more level of absurdity to the statue — Colin Firth emerging soaking wet from the lake wasn’t even in the scene that wasn’t in the book. It’s a vision that exists solely in the imaginations of the types of people who like to imagine Colin Firth emerging soaking wet from a lake. Here’s the scene in question, just to confirm how strange this statue is, before it takes off on a tour of the UK (yes, really).

Awesome VHS Covers Remind Us Why Netflix loses to the Video Store
11 jul 2013 13:17

Ever since Netflix entered our lives, the internet movie business has pretty much put all other movie businnesses to shame. Literally. They've gone bankrupt. However, those of us old enough to remember the good old days of VHS rentals at the local Blockbuster remember what a fun adventure it was to troll around the horror section of the movie rental store. Those of us with awesome childhoods actually spent time watching these with out parent consent sometimes! These terribly bad horror movie VHS covers are a reminder of how awesome movie experiences can be. Something Netflix will never be able to accomplish with their aesthetic, digital media and they're little red envelopes in the mail. Let's take a trip to memory lane.

Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' Gets The Sesame Street Mashup Treatment
10 jul 2013 17:20
Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (feat. Pharrell Williams) is the song of the summer, and mashups involving Sesame Street set to good music are delightful. Now Adam Schleichkorn of the aptly titled Is This How You Go Viral and of Mylo the Cat fame has created a mashup of “Get Lucky” and footage from Sesame Street. And sure, it may seem weird for Grover to sing about getting some and staying up for good fun, but is that any less uncomfortable than seeing the POTUS sing it? These monsters just want the same things we do: eating cookies, finding the monster at the end of the book, and getting lucky. Enjoy.

In 'Nicer Than It Sounds' News: Dad Lets Son Kill Himself In Mario 64
10 jul 2013 17:14
We’ve seen quite a few examples lately of cool dads hacking old video games to make them more fun for their kids — for instance there was the dad who swapped Mario for Pauline in the original Donkey Kong, so his daughter could play as a girl. Awww. Well, the hack we’re about to tell you is a little bit…different. A Redditor by the name of Pourmeanother77 edited Super Mario 64 so that all the goombas have his son’s face. So yes, this guy’s kid can now spend his days brutally stomping his own visage. To be fair, I totally would have loved doing that as a kid. Scroll down for graphic pictures of a child’s face being squashed!

In Praise Of The Burger King Croissan'Wich
10 jul 2013 17:07
Croissants are all the rage these days. People are going apesh*t for the Cronut — a croissant/donut hybrid — and Kanye West’s Yeezus gives a shout-out to the delicious French pastry. And then this afternoon I ran across this: the “Croger,” a cheeseburger that uses a croissant as its bun. Now, I guess you can say that the croissant is having its moment — one that is all too well-deserved, because croissants are freaking delicious. But let’s give credit where credit’s due: Burger King was waaaayyyy ahead of the curve on this croissant trend. Like, 30 years ahead of the curve. Remember, Burger King rolled out the Croissan’Wich in 1983. Prior to the introduction of the Croissan’Wich, the dominant fast food breakfast sandwich was the McDonald’s Egg McMuffin, which was and is disgusting for a number of reasons, not the least of which being that they’re served on English muffins, and biting into an English muffin is akin to biting into an old shoe covered in sand. I have never eaten an Egg McMuffin in my life, nor do I ever plan to. But I’ll eat the sh*t out of a Croissan’Wich! Additionally, for many people who grew up in rural areas with limited access to the outside world — people like myself — the Croissan’Wich was our first introduction to the croissant. It was goddamn cultural phenomenon!

Hipster Dinosaurs Are Making A Greatest Hits Comeback
10 jul 2013 17:01
Ah, the halcyon hipster-ribbing days of 2010. Many of you are too young to remember, but back then you could mockingly use phrases like "mainstream" and "before they were cool" with reckless abandon and everyone in on the joke nodded and smiled. Then larger media outlets started churning out hipster exposes and you heard your mom use the term once and it was all over. And the best sitcom take on the phenomenon isn't even a sitcom anymore. We have to go back! Well, thanks to the internet's mandatory recycling program, Molly Lewis's brilliant "Hipster Dinosaurs" are making a comeback on Tumblr, Twitter, and various other places in a holy-sh*t-remember-how-funny-hipster-jokes-were-I-never-saw-this-inspired-coloring-book-before-check-it-out sort of way. And it's really hard to deny they're still pretty wonderful. First timers, sit back and enjoy. Return appreciators of the finest in web culture, sit back and re-enjoy in the most meta of fashions.

Floating Umbrellas Once Again Cover The Streets in Portugal
10 jul 2013 13:06
Do you remember the colorful Floating Umbrellas installation in the streets of Agueda, Portugal we posted last year? This year, Sextafeira Produções has once again hung up hundreds of colorful umbrellas, transforming your shopping experience or the afternoon walk into a Mary-Poppins type of adventure! The colorful sight was captured by photographers Patricia Almeida and Pedro Nascimento, and the pictures went viral on the Internet in no time. Just like the last year, Patricia was one first ones to post them on flickr giving everyone a chance to take a virtual walk in the most colorful street of Portugal. “I felt like a kid, amazed by all that color!” says Patricia about how she felt under the umbrellas. The best part, besides looking awesome, is that the installation also protects everyone from rain and sun. The project is part of the local Agitagueda art festival, and will be up throughout July, so make sure you stop by if you’re traveling nearby!

Fake Latte Art With Kitty Marshmallows
10 jul 2013 12:52
Because 3D latte art requires talent and let’s face it: you don’t have any, here are some adorable marshmallows so you can fake it till you make it the latte art craze runs its course. The kitty-themed confections are handmade and sold by Yawahada, a Japanese marshmallow specialty shop. Which is a thing, apparently. Then again, why am I surprised that a marshmallow specialty shop exists? Just the other day I drove by a place called Seats R Us. That’s a store whose specialty is seats. But you wouldn’t think so based on the sign featured a big-ass drawing of a table. That’s bad business folks. Plus looks like total shit. Sorry not sorry!

Using Wonder Bread as her medium, the Oakland-based artist draws from iconic pop-culture, art, literature, and historic figures to inspire each detailed face. She uses slices of classic white Wonder Bread and a steady hand to shape the tiny balls into something unique and unexpected.

Controversial & Private Lives Of Superheroes Exposed
10 jul 2013 12:00

French illustrator Grégoire Guillemin has taken his love of superheros and added a bold new twist to the art form. Rather than showcasing them in the midst of battle or fusing supervillains with their modern-day equivalents or even perhaps incorporating them into historical artworks, he’s simply decided to reveal their intimate and private lives. His illustrative series titled ‘Secret Life of Heroes’literally pops out of the screen at you, not only because of his bold colour set but also because of the illustrations themselves… Batman and Robin get it on, Snow White kicks back with a cigarette, Wonder Woman seductively sucks on a banana and all whilst Catwoman indulges on some girl on girl action with Poison Ivy. It’s a vivid blast of colourful, sexy and irreverent fun – best of all, you can get your hands on these artworks (and many more) for under $30 via Greg’s Society6 page. Trust us, your walls will thank you for it.

12 Creative Restaurant Signs
10 jul 2013 11:26
The restaurant biz is super competitive, which is why standing out from every other place is a key compenent to success. Of course a good restaurant should have great food, but first impressions (aka the kind that happen before you even walk into an establishment) are often overlooked. This is where creative signs come into play. Those sidewalk sketches do way more than list the day’s specials. If you look close enough, some of ‘em are pretty darn clever. Maybe a Bruce Springsteen drawing helps to advertise a Corn in the USA dish, or perhaps an awful poem draws in the crowds. Regardless, we’re huge fans of these 12 creative restaurant signs.

New AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Set Photos: Rhino and Spider-Man
10 jul 2013 11:08
I don’t want to get all mushy or anything, but I thoroughly enjoyed Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man. So much so that it has worked itself into my regular Blu-Ray rotation. Needless to say, I am excited for the sequel. I am a little less excited that there are going to be multiple villains in the movie, but I will save my opinion on that for a later post. Some more set images from the movie have made their way onto the interwebs, and I have to say that I am a little more intrigued than I was before. It shows some action shots of Andrew Garfield as Spider-man, but it also gives a little peek into how Paul Giamatti will look as Rhino. I know that it doesn’t show much other than insane facial expressions. It will be interesting to see what this Rhino armor he's wearing will look like.

Infographic: Rappers Say They're Worth Vs. How Much Actually Worth

I bet you can't find one day, when you turn on the radio and don't hear a rap song about how 'they be gettin' all dat dough'. As it turns out, inflating your literal worth is a time-honored tradition in music, and Business Week took a look at the worst offenders. They put together an infographic that compares “specific lyrics with data from Forbes’s annual ‘Cash Kings of Hip Hop’ report from the same year the given artist’s net worth-related rap song was released.” Basically, Pitbull and Nicki Minaj are goddamn liars.

Godzilla GIFs Are Here To Trash Your Tuesday

We're seeing a new wave of interest in giant monster movies, in light of the arrival of Pacific Rim in theaters this Friday. But, of course, none of this would be possible without the one true big scaly lizard, Godzilla, who we're celebrating today in GIF form. Godzilla has been around for twenty-eight movies, one terrible remake, and a lot of licensing and merchandising. Even though the dignity and attempt at larger social commentary in the first film was quickly discarded in favor of giant monsters performing wrestling moves on each other, Godzilla is and remains the most beloved giant monster of them all. Also, he is a rich source of ridiculous GIFs, such as...

The 'Grand Theft Auto V' Gameplay Video Is Here!
09 jul 2013 15:29
Rockstar Games has released a gameplay trailer for Grand Theft Auto V, which is coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17th. And for anyone worried it might not come to PC (there still isn’t a Red Dead Redemption for PC), there’s promising news. Rockstar posted a job listing online for “a talented graphics programmer to help bring our latest titles to the PC platform.” Please let those “latest titles” be Red Dead and Grand Theft Auto V. Check out the gameplay trailer below. As with the three-in-one trailer, this video gives little indication of how cool the sandbox aspects of the game may be. Like I said before, I play sandbox games for the sandbox and the potential hilarious mods, not for pixel boobs and cutscenes. Just give me a jet pack and a rocket launcher and I’m happy (both in life and in game).

Watch: A Life-Size Dexter Birthday Cake Isn't Creepy At All
09 jul 2013 14:25
We were busy celebrating America on the 4th of July, so we missed Michael C. Hall’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel to discuss the Dexter Final season. Hall was charming, as usual, in talking about how getting mistaken for his Dexter character is not so bad when he’s waiting in line at a grocery store. He also mentioned that he had a friend who had once promised him that, if Hall changed his name to “The Force,” that friend would give him half of his earnings for THE REST OF HIS LIFE. Fun Fact: Because there’s already a Michael Hall in the Screen Actor’s Guild, not only does Michael C. Hall have to use his middle initial, but the same guy was responsible for the addition of Anthony to Anthony Michael Hall’s name. Anyway, the best part comes in part II of the videos below, where Jimmy Kimmel shows Michael C. Hall pictures of a life-sized birthday cake made in the image of Dexter, which is awesome if you like the idea of slicing up Dexter. I’ve also included several pictures of the cake, which are not creepy at all, compliments of Miss Cakehead. The details are impressive.

See: 'King Of The Hill' Animation Style Guide
09 jul 2013 14:19
Thanks to non-stop repeats on Adult Swim, King of the Hill is finally getting the recognition it didn’t receive when the series was first on. For 13 seasons, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ animated look at small-town life in Texas quietly hummed along; it was never as showy as its “Animation Domination” counterparts like Family Guy, Futurama, and The PJs, obviously, and was often delayed by NFL games running late, but with the exception of The Simpsons, no Sunday night comedy, on Fox or otherwise, stayed as dependably solid for as long as King of the Hill did. That’s probably because the animators knew never to give Peggy Hill gigantic cans. So recently we just passed along a King of the Hill animation style guide that’s an interesting look at the do’s and don’t's of designing Boomhower (no smiling, ever), Dale (never flip his shades up), and Bobby (always acting deadpan). It even details the correct way numbers should be drawn on clocks, cash registers, and calculators. One question left unanswered, though: what’s the best to animate POCKET SAND?

Chris Evans Brought An Axe To New 'Snowpiercer' Trailer And Videos
09 jul 2013 14:14
Bong Joon-ho’s English debut Snowpiercer still doesn’t have a US release date set, but this high-concept sci fi will still be chugga-chugging its way into South Korean theaters on August 1st. In addition to the first footage and international trailer, we now have a shorter trailer and several videos about the film. Snowpiercer is based on French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, in which an experiment aimed to stop global warming triggers an ice age instead. All remaining humans live on a train (the Snowpiercer) with 1001 carriages and a perpetual motion engine. The social class system is based on how close your carriage is to the engine, and a revolution starts at the poor end of the train. Considering we were just in the longest recession since the Great Depression, The Weinstein Company might want to consider releasing this in America. Just saying, a lot of people can relate. Also, Captain America has an axe, so it’s got that going for it, which is nice.

9 Series To Binge-Read On Marvel Unlimited
09 jul 2013 14:02

The Marvel Unlimited app seems perfect. Ten bucks a month and you get most of the Marvel Comics catalogue from the beginning of time all the way to six months ago. Unfortunately, bugs and glitches relegated it to being an exercise in annoyance until its newest update about a month ago finally made things more functional. When you finally get to the app, the unending selection may seem overwhelming (even with a pretty nifty search engine), so I'm here to help you grab nine series to binge read. Every series run here runs at least about 30 issues deep so you can occupy your summer of sh*tty TV shows and *gulp* baseball with some quality comic reading. These are also good jumping-on series to get your friend or girlfriend who's not into comics yet introduced. So there you go.
