Scarlett Johansson Is Marrying Not You
05 sep 2013 10:33
Unless, of course, you’re ScarJo’s future husband Romain Dauriac, in which case: hi, I hate you. Anyway, according to every celebrity website ever, Dauriac, a French journalist who looks comically small in this photo, recently put a ring on it, “it” being Scarlett Johansson’s finger, “Scarlett Johansson” being not my future wife. People spoke to an anonymous source who revealed, “I can confirm that Scarlett and Romain are engaged. They haven’t chosen a date for the wedding.” (At least we know the informant isn’t Ryan Reynolds.) In related news, here is an important collection of important Scarlett Johansson GIFs, which is the best we normal people are going to get for now, except for Dauriac, who gets to spend the rest of his life with a living GIF.

The Video For Empire Of The Sun's 'DNA' Is Delightful And Wacky
05 sep 2013 10:32
Empire of the Sun > Daft Punk. There, I said it. DEAL WITH IT. F*ck Daft Punk, those Colbert dissing mofos! So yes, as you can probably tell, when it comes to electronic music I’m an Empire of the Sun fanboy. And I absolutely love this song, “DNA.” In the video for it embedded above, they ride bikes and buses around LA at night, crash a late night pool party and get arrested by LAPD. It’s awesome, and, like the song, it makes me happy. So EAT IT, DAFT PUNK!

Watch Bill Hader's Impression Of James Franco At His Roast
05 sep 2013 10:31
Bill Hader sat down with Jimmy Kimmel last night and pretty much never got up, doing an extended interview and then playing sidekick during a Richard Simmons visit. It was all great and if you’re the Hader fans we are you should watch every second. There’s getting stranded in Martha’s Vineyard at Seth Meyers’s wedding, people having sex during He Got Game, and geeking out on famous directors during “Laser Cats.” But most importantly and hilariously of all there’s Hader describing the scene at James Franco’s Comedy Central Roast and how he goes way back with James. That starts at the 1:45 mark above in Part 3 of the interview but gets top billing because it’s perfect.

Fun Photos of Personality-Filled Frogs
04 sep 2013 14:03
Is that tiny frog holding a leaf like an umbrella, to shield himself from the rain? Yes, and it's just one of several amazing shots by photographers who feature the tailless amphibians in their photos. Photographer Penkdix Paime shot the tiny tree frog in his neighbor's backyard in Jember, East Java, Indonesia. The clever frog used the leaf as his umbrella for more than 30 minutes as the rain pitter-pattered all around him. After showing you some fantastic photos of some very expressive owls, I thought it was time to turn our attention to the often neglected green friend that's found mostly in the rainforest. Incredibly, there are approximately 4,800 recorded species of frogs, making it one of the most diverse group of vertebrates around. Now, please enjoy our top 14 photos of personality-filled frogs.

Stills from the Lion King vs A Real Life Safari
04 sep 2013 13:58
Redditor and fellow Canadian Brandon Heuser recently took the trip of a lifetime to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. After returning to his hometown of Vancouver, he decided to rewatch Disney’s The Lion King. Throughout the film he caught himself saying, “hey I have a photo like that!”. Feeling inspired, he decided to take stills from the movie and compare them to photos he had taken on his trip. The results were shared last month on Reddit. The accompanying 24-picture album on Imgur has been viewed over 350,000 times since. While not every shot is ‘identical’ (e.g., Rafiki is a mandrill not a baboon) the similarities are quite astounding.

China’s Cliffside Plank Path Will Give you Goose Bumps
04 sep 2013 13:49

Hua Shan is a mountain located near the city of Huayin in Shaanxi province, about 120 kilometres (75 mi) east of Xi’an. It is one of China’s Five Great Mountains and has a long history of religious significance. Hua Shan is classified as having five main peaks, of which the highest is the South Peak at 2,154.9 meters (7,070 ft). It is on South Peak where you will find the famous Cliffside Plank Path. The exhilarating mountain hike is not for the faint of heart. There is a cost of approximately 30 yuan (just under $5 usd) and you are given two straps to hook onto wires on the path. The plank path includes steel rod ladders, footholds carved out of the cliff and narrow wooden plank walks. All of this is located thousands of feet above ground (check out the video at the bottom for a first-person POV).

Heartbreaking Paintings of Deceased Shelter Dogs
04 sep 2013 13:44
Just like photographer Traer Scott and her heartbreaking portraits of shelter dogs, artist Mark Barone is trying to bring some much needed attention to the neglected animals in shelters. After learning that 5,500 shelter dogs are killed every day in the United States, he decided to paint 5,500 portraits of actual shelter dogs with names and the date that they were killed. Now two years into the project, Barone has painted more than 3,500 portraits which, for any dog lover, are incredibly hard to look at.

Old Relics Create a Visual History of Our Past
04 sep 2013 13:43
As the digital age continues to dominate our world, from smart phones to 3D TVs to everything in between, the days of typewriters and rotary dial phones are moving further and further into the past. In honor of a more simple time, artist Robert Moran created this series entitled Relics. For each image, he isolated old fashioned objects and documented them as a type of visual record. The Maine-based photographer created the project to preserve the memory of inventions that have provided a foundation for today's high-speed technology. The centrally placed antiques are illuminated with strong lighting, which produces dramatic shadows that fall onto the wall behind. In each photograph, Moran provides his viewers with a peaceful moment to ponder the original function of each vintage machine, to investigate the scratches, cracks, and wear and tear, and to consider how the items have affected our everyday world.

Incredibly Expressive Owl Photography
04 sep 2013 13:41
Is that little owl yawning or singing? Belgian-based photographer Yves Adams has the answer as he's the one behind the adorable shot. "Little owls are CUTE!," he states. "They make you laugh with whatever they do! But when they start to yawn, my heart melts! This picture has been taken in Spain, with the help of Steve West. This is probably the male, who was clearly bored, while the female was in the nest on her eggs." Today, we bring you over a dozen photos that show you just how expressive owls can be. Whether it's the way they tilt their heads or walk with attitude, you have to agree, they're one photogenic bunch. "There's nothing like observing local burrowing owls over a period of weeks, even months," states wildlife photographer Debbie Tubridy. Whether they're first peeking out of their burrow, beginning to run outside of the burrow, testing their wings, learning to play, or in this case, exploring the world around them and perfecting lifelong skills that will help them survive on their own, they're always fascinating to watch and photograph."

What 12 of The World’s Biggest Websites Looked Like at the Beginning
04 sep 2013 13:19
Even the greatest among us had humble beginnings. This is just as true for websites, however, as it is for people. Even online giants like Amazon, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter were once itty-bitty websites with monochrome homepages, poorly-thought-out logos and boring or stark turn-of-the-century designs. Mashable, which collected the old homepages from the Wayback Machine, even included their own site on the list. Check out these images to see how the internet greats looked in their infancy.

Experience The 1920′s In 3D Via Stereoscopic Photography
04 sep 2013 13:00
Rewind to the 1920′s when film and photography were still in their infancy, where artists were still grappling with the limitations of the technology itself and it’s here you’ll find the interesting tale of a photographer named J. Dearden Holmes. One of his clients whom he produced photographic work for was called Cavenders Ltd. Their primary business was selling cigarettes and to make them all the more enticing, they would include stereoscopic cards within each packet. Two images slightly offset, one for your right eye, one for your left eye, that when combined would create the illusion of 3D depth. Holmes was commissioned to shoot a series titled ‘Peeps Into Many lands, A Series of Real Photographs’ long-winded yes, but for its time – his stereoscopic photographs were a close as you could get to actually setting foot in those distant lands. His photography journey took him all over the world, including Egypt, London, Canada, Delhi where he photographed the likes of The Sphinx, London’s Zoo, Kutb Minar and even the Rocky Mountains, before converting them into stereoscopic packs. Today those images have been converted into the trust animated GIF to give you the same effect he created all those years ago.

Hidden 19th Century Fore-Edge Paintings Found on the Pages of a Book
03 sep 2013 10:17
While most of us know that some of the greatest treasures can be found in books, turns out that sometimes they also appear on the fore-edges of the pages. Recently Colleen Theisen shared a gif she made, showing an amazing example of fore-edge painting on the side of the book from 1873. The painting was found on the edge of Robert Mudie’s book Autumn at the Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Iowa. Fore-edge painting dates back to 1650′s, and is a technique when a picture is drawn on the edge of the book pages. Sometimes the image can be seen when the book is closed, sometimes the pages have to be slightly fanned out.

Twitter Hero Pays To Promote Tweet Trashing British Airways
03 sep 2013 09:41
Is there anyone on Twitter who hasn’t used the service to bitch about airlines and/or air travel in general? I think not! Everyone does it. It’s what Twitter was invented for. That said, some do it better than others. Take Hasan Syed, for instance, who tweets under the handle, @HVSVN. Rather than use an average, run-of-the-mill tweet to voice his disgust with British Airways’ customer service after they’d lost his father’s luggage, Syed paid to promote a tweet that did so.
