27 feb 2013 14:17
Pope Benedict XVI appeared at his final weekly general audience today at St. Peter’s Square in front of an estimated 150,000 people recalling moments of "joy and light’’ as well as difficulty during his eight years as pontiff. Benedict, 85, said he decided to retire after realizing he didn’t have the "strength of mind or body" to carry on. Benedict meets tomorrow with cardinals for a final time before traveling to his retirement residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

Underground Mackelmore has blown up in mainstream. Selling out yet?
27 feb 2013 14:14
With Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ rapid ascent into the mainstream spotlight, there has been a lot of criticism thrown in their direction. Most recently, it stems from their song “Wings” being licensed for use by the NBA All Star Game. To further complicate things, the song’s lyrics were edited to fit with the NBA/TNT brand and to tone down the song’s central message of the problems with consumerism.

Kanye West Delivers Another Rant, Says He’s Not a Fan of “Suit & Tie”
27 feb 2013 14:01
Oh, Kanye. Your crazy antics never cease to entertain us, but you might want to ease off on the rants. In his latest rant, Kanye West went on about the Grammys, Obama, capitalism, his YOLO way of living, and – gasp – how he “ain’t fuckin’ with that ‘Suit & Tie’” (amongst many, many other things) at the first of two shows in London last night. Anyone else wondering why this jab at Jay-Z‘s latest venture was necessary at all? Maybe this means that, hopefully, he’ll be releasing part two to “Big Brother.” Watch the video below.

The RIAA is Not Satisfied With Google’s Anti-Piracy Efforts
27 feb 2013 13:58
Last year, Google announced that it would make efforts to reduce the visibility of copyright infringing sites by taking legitimate violation notices into account when ranking search results. This was especially relevant to the anti-piracy efforts of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), but they aren’t happy with the outcome so far. The RIAA issued a statement on their official website explaining why: “Six months later, we have found no evidence that Google’s policy has had a demonstrable impact on demoting sites with large amounts of piracy. These sites consistently appear at the top of Google’s search results for popular songs or artists.”

Mumford & Sons Want to Make Hip-Hop
27 feb 2013 13:55
There are many variations on the theme of “Mo Money Mo Problems,” and one of the best examples is with indie bands who make it big and then start getting hated on. While Mumford & Sons have stayed pretty faithful to the style that made them one of indie’s most talked about bands in the last few years, they’ve also received their fair share of criticism for a somewhat predictable sound. Well, their next move isn’t a predictable one, but there’s a good chance they’ll be getting some more criticism. Unless Mumford was joking with Rolling Stone, the band’s next move could be into hip-hop.

Bad News for People who Illegally Download Music!
27 feb 2013 13:53
Today, the Center for Copyright Information (CCI) launched the controversial Copyright Alert System. The CCI calls the system a “groundbreaking and collaborative effort to curb online piracy and promote the lawful use of digital music, movies and TV shows.” The idea is that content owners (major labels, Hollywood) will monitor file sharing sites for infringement, and when they catch it they’ll notify your internet service provider, who will send you an alert. After a series of warnings, your service provide can slow down your connection or block your service completely. AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon are all on board with the system. Watch a video on the Copyright Alert System above.

Dog shoots owner in the leg
27 feb 2013 13:22
Gregory Dale Lanier was driving his car with his dog when something unusual happened. The Dog (Unnamed at this point) Happened to kick a gun which Lanier had thought was Unloaded. It Wasn't. The Gun went off shooting Lanier in the leg. In Case Your wondering the dog was not arrested by the Police and Lanier is doing just fine. For Such a strange story this isn't the first time this happened. There have been several dog owner shootings in the past couple years. Just last year in fact while on a hunting trip a dog got excited and jumped up on his owner with a gun in his hand the dogs paw hit the trigger and the mans hand had to be amputated. Its amazing how often these stories occur. Maybe next time you should leave the gun or dog at home, together they can make for a dangerous combo.

Relive Being In An Actual Riot With This 8-Bit Game
27 feb 2013 11:40

We’re pretty big fans of the whole ’8-bit’ genre / style here (as you can probably tell) but we’ve yet to feature a game / app designed deliberately with that very look and feel. Say hello to RIOT, a forthcoming iOS, Android, Mac, and PC game that is currently seeking support on funding site IndieGoGo. You can pick your side, a mild manner mob who has become enraged and delieriously out of control, or local law enforcement – armed to the teeth with guns, bulletproof vests and shields. Either way, it looks like there’s some serious fun to be had.

Ingenious Portraits Made From Rolled Up Bank Notes
27 feb 2013 11:37
French photographer & origami wizard Philippe Pétremant is the creative individual behind these rolled up bank notes that create a collage of some of the most recognized political figures in modern times. Using bank notes from around the world, he’s twisted, contorted & folded them together adding in a paper clip to keep them in place. The end result is a series of amusing portraits title Les Sept Mercenaires, that are as unique as they are ingenious. Although playful and subversive, we think Pétremant‘s true gift is being able to blur the lines between what is credible and what clearly isn’t….

A Shocking Look At Hong Kong's Claustrophobic Apartments
27 feb 2013 11:35
The world’s population is living longer and as a result space is getting smaller. That leads to expensive housing & cost of living, but due to the discrepancy in income across many parts of the developed world, it’s often the poor who live in the most restrictive and confined of spaces. That’s never been more apparent in capital cities like Hong Kong in China, choking under the weight of 7M people living in a space of 426 sq miles. But stats don’t really put those kind of conditions into perspective, that’s why the Chinese Society for Community Organization have released these shocking photographs to help raise the public’s understanding and appreciation of the lives of those less fortunate. Spaces so small that every millimetre of space is used to stack, store, house or hide something and yet for the people living in those conditions, they are simply grateful to have a roof over their heads at all. What does it say about a nation, when the most disadvantage members of that society are forced to live in claustrophobic conditions similar to those of caged animals in a zoo? For many in Hong Kong’s urban jungle – that’s their reality every day.

A Collection Of Surreal & Decomposed 35mm Film Clippings
27 feb 2013 11:34
These days the world of cinema is all digitized, backed up and edited on countless blinking severs. But in cinema’s formative years (1897 -1915), such devices were a thing of pure fantasy, creating and indeed editing a film was an incredibly manual process. Much of the magic and techniques of those times have been lost…..but not entirely. Noted and late Italian film historian Davide Turconi managed to keep some prized artifacts from the world of film, collecting an astounding 23,491 film clippings during his lifetime. But time has sadly not been kind, with many of these 35mm nitrate film clippings damaged, degraded, warped and in state severe of decomposition. They’ve now been released to the public by Joshua Yumibe, who is charged with looking after with the Turconi Project.

Creepy Close-Up Portraits Of Retired Ventriloquist Dummies
27 feb 2013 11:30
To say Matthew Rolston is a seriously talented photographer is understating things somewhat. The celebrity photographer can list the likes of Beyonce, Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and even Oprah Winfrey in his portfolio. But his most recent photo shoot didn’t involve any celebrities or humans at all. That’s because he traveled to the Vent Haven Museum in Forth Mitchell, Kentucky – home of the infamous ‘Puppet House’. It was there that he found a wealth of retired & abandoned ventriloquist dummies – characters that were once animated sidekicks, now discarded objects staring blankly into space. His vivid and powerful work genuinely brings out the personalities in each figurine, looking at each you have a sense of what they might sound like and even how they might act. He’s collated all the images from the unique shoot in a beautiful new book titled Talking Heads: The Vent Haven Portraits. In the meantime, here’s a few samples from the book and shoot itself – creepy, fun or odd? You decide.

Religious Institutions Built Out Of Ammunition & Guns
27 feb 2013 11:29
Religion and war are sadly inextricably intertwined and linked together. The Muslim conquests, the Crusades, the Reconquista, and the French Wars of Religion are frequently cited historical examples least we forget the past decade of troubles in the Middle East and the never-ending saga between Jerusalem and Palestine. Where one exists, so too does the other and yet for many people, religious houses of worship are places of quiet contemplation, love, celebration or solace. Immensely talented sculptur Al Farrow explores this theme in his latest series titled Reliquaries – where the very houses of God have been built from gun, ammunition, weapons and arms all designed to dominate, destroy or end life. It’s provocative, controversial and a bold statement that for many around the world – religion and war will always be inseparable, no matter which book or building you or those around you subscribe to.
