Curiosity Stars Taking Samples of Soil
30 oct 2012 03:40

Scooping up a handful of dirt may seem simple, but for a robot operating on another planet, it’s a major operation. NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover is making itself ready to collect its first soil sample at an area called “Rocknest.” The preparations involve testing the nuclear-powered rover’s motorized scoop and cleaning out its Chemistry and Mineralogy (ChemMin) and Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) laboratories of any terrestrial contaminants before receiving soil samples

Foreigners in Soviet Odessa of 70-80s
30 oct 2012 03:38

These photographs were taken in Odessa of the 1970-80s by foreign photographers Ian Berry and Peter Marlow. In fact only one photo belongs to the second. Some of the shots seem to be gloomy, could it be because foreign photographers wanted to see the USSR as the “Evil Empire”?

What do you do when you're trying to assemble six lead actors for a poster shoot? Well after months of mismatched schedules you despair, give up and decide that you can manage without them. Result: you really can't. This frightening collection of heads and bodies amounts to one of the shoddiest examples of recent years and will hopefully make stars think again when turning down an hour's worth of posing.

Cool Vending Machines
29 oct 2012 21:38

In the US we don't always have the coolest vending machines. But we have the internet and the knowledge of some of these cool vending machines. Here are some examples of what people find important or at least practical. You be the judge, but tell me that a live lobster vending machine wouldn't be awesome at 3 in the morning.

Britain From Above...
29 oct 2012 18:34
...All taken on a phone... While we've shown some love to America from above recently, we thought it only fair to salute the brilliance of Great Britain from a great height as well. While we're undoubtedly amazed by what's on offer here from aerial photographer Jason Hawkes, we're probably more amazed that he took all of the pictures with a mobile phone. A Nokia N8 to be specific. Hawkes took to the sky and snapped views of Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and London for us to gawp at. This now gives us zero excuse not to take better photos with our phone. Oh, hang on, we don't have the helicopter he travelled in. See, yeah there's our excuse.

Brilliant New Bizarre Photography
29 oct 2012 18:32
It's not often that we here at Shortlist.com make grand statements (we usually prefer somewhat medium) but we're going to come right out and say that Adrian Samson is our new favourite photographer. The Hungarian genius, who now lives in London and works freelance with Getty Images, has provided us with a variety of images to stare lovingly at. The pics are deceptively glossy but succeed in subverting our expectations. Hang on, what's that giant plastic bumblebee doing by that lamppost? Wait, why does that elderly woman have an AC/DC tattoo on her neck? Originally aiming to be a fashion photographer, the unconventional Samson found his style to be "too quirky" so focused on advertising instead.

Attending Public Dissections
29 oct 2012 18:15
Thanks to advances in science and the relaxing of church and government laws, the dissection of human corpses came back into vogue in the 1300s. At first these dissections were performed in small rooms or houses for the benefit of a handful for medical students. Then, almost overnight, a bored and apparently pretty morbid public started clamoring to attend them as well.Specially designed “anatomy theatres” were purpose-built in many of the major European cities; most could seat well over...

A Marvel of Ants
29 oct 2012 18:13
Photographer: Bence MátéCountry of Residence: HungaryWhen Bence first tried to photograph leaf-cutter ants in action, he thought it was going to be easy. It wasn’t, but relishing the challenge, he found out as much as he could about their complex society and spent hours watching and following them in the Costa Rican rainforest. ‘They proved to be wonderful subjects,’ says Bence, who discovered that they were most active at night. He would follow a column as it fanned out into the forest....

21st Century Totem Poles
29 oct 2012 18:02
The iconic Native American totem poles have come back around for the age of the 21st century. After a particularly greedy weekend, we might take a look at the bin and feel a little bit awful. Not just because of our ever-expanding waistline or ever-decreasing bank balance but because of the whole environment and all that. Photographer David Welch creates totem poles from a variety of items that sum up our consumptive habits. His images aim to create discussion around how much we use and take for granted. While they certainly do that, they also leave us feeling even guiltier, as that pile of burgers is making us absurdly hungry. We may have missed the point on that one.

Crypt, Rome
29 oct 2012 15:47
An elaborate homage to the dead—and a reminder of mortality to the living—adorns a crypt under Santa Maria della Concezione church in Rome. These macabre ornamentations, constructed from the bones of 4,000 deceased Capuchin friars, "make the people who stacked the bones in Paris's catacombs look like amateurs," according to one observer.
