Portishead Is Upset At Weeknd Song Sample Without Permission
15 jul 2013 23:48

The news here should be “yay for new Weeknd”; instead, it’s “yay for new Weeknd…except for the part where he sampled a song without another artist’s permission.” After Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. the Weeknd, revealed another sensual, bruised track from his sophomore album, Kiss Land, Portishead guitarist Geoff Barrow tweeted: When someone asks to sample you and you refuse they should have the respect as a fellow artist to not use it. This is unfortunate if true, though I understand Tesfaye’s temptation; every song should sample Portishead’s ice-cold trip-hop, with consent, of course. Still, I guess the rumors are true: Tesfaye thinks Loverboy is singing about him when they say, “Everybody’s working for the weekend.”

Beyoncé Tells Concertgoer To 'Put That Damn Camera Down'
15 jul 2013 23:51

But in a good way, not a bad that-tall-guy-with-the-glasses-is-saving-a-mental-picture-of-Beyoncé’s-ass way. During a concert on Friday, Bey invited the audience to sing along with her to “Irreplaceable,” but she noticed someone who was having none of the follow-the-bouncing-butt fun: he was too busy filming the show. And I quote, in a wise tone not unlike the YYYs’, “See, you can’t even sing because you’re too busy taping. I’m right in your face, baby. You gotta seize this moment baby! Put that damn camera down!” Good on you, Beyoncé, for throwing down the gauntlet (even if it’s for shady reasons) — now do something about the backpackers.

'Mad Max' Does Donuts With Some Brutal Gameplay Footage
15 jul 2013 23:55

We don’t know much about Mad Max, the video game based off of the film series from Avalanche, except that you’ll have a car and a huge open post-apocalyptic world to drive it in. Now they’ve rolled out some in-engine footage that gives us more of an idea, and it looks like a cross between Twisted Metal and The Last Of Us. Of course, we knew brutality was going to be a key part of the proceedings. But it looks like Avalanche is going to have you breaking necks and snapping wrists when you’re not smashing cars to pieces:

5 Kinds Of Games You Need To Play This Summer
15 jul 2013 23:56

I’ve never really understood the bad rap summer has with gamers. Okay, sure, not a lot of games are released during the summer months, but in my opinion it’s the best time to actually play games. You have more free time, and come on, it’s not like you’re going to spend most of it outside. There’re bugs and heat and annoying people who might try to foist a game of Frisbee on you out there! In fact, I think there are certain kinds of games that should ideally only be played during the summer months whist covered in a glistening layer of sweat. Such as…

'X-Force' Is Headed To The Big Screen, We Handicap The Roster
15 jul 2013 23:57

Bust out your pouch vests and your gigantic pulse weapons: Fox is bringing X-Force to the big screen. The question is, though, which version of X-Force? For those unfamiliar, X-Force is essentially the X-Men's black ops unit. Whatever situations the X-Men can't touch, or might require a show of force the team is unwilling to make, X-Force deals with. At least in theory; this being Marvel that concept is a bit more fluid than one might think. Here's what we know about the movie; according to Rob Liefeld, this has been in the works since March:

Oh, Capcom: 'Ultra Street Fighter IV' Is Coming Early 2014
15 jul 2013 23:57

EVO 2013, the world’s highest profile fighting game tournament (and celebration of fighting games in general) went down this weekend, and during the event Capcom revealed that there’s yet another new version of Street Fighter IV on the way. Because, come on, of course they did! Ultra Street Fighter IV will feature a range of gameplay tweaks, a number of new arenas, and most importantly, five “new” fighters. So far Hugo, Poison, Elena and Rolento have been announced (giving this latest version of Street Fighter IV a very Street Fighter III-ish flavor). The good news? This latest iteration of SFIV will be available as a $15 DLC pack for those who already own Super Street Fighter IV. Exceptionally generous by Capcom’s standards! Hit the jump for a trailer…

'Deus Ex: The Fall' Is A Great Game On The Wrong Platform
15 jul 2013 23:57

One of the problems console developers have had with the boom in tablet gaming is that they all look at tablets, with the wealth of possibilities a touchscreen offers for innovative control schemes, and decide “We should try and make this a controller!” It never works. And Deus Ex: The Fall is a superb example of that, alas. The game itself is great in almost every respect. It’s a bit like the PS2 predecessor Deus Ex: Human Revolution never had: It’s got sidequests, multiple weapons, plenty of augments, a beefy-for-mobile running time of six to seven hours, and branching story options that give it replay value. It’s not as rich and complex as the game it’s based on, but it’s richer and more complex than most mobile games, or console games for that matter, bother with. It is also a fairly linear game compared to its console counterpart, but it’s a game you’ll play twice for seven bucks.

Dave Matthews Hitched A Ride To His Own Concert
15 jul 2013 23:59

Unwashed hair, scraggly beard, acoustic guitar, that glazed look in their eyes that could either mean they’re having a particularly good high or might eat your face off at any second. That description could fit every hitchhiker ever, or Dave Matthews of…what’s his band name? Oh yeah, that’s right: The This “All Along the Watchtower” Cover Is How Long? Band. Over the weekend, they were one in the same, as Matthews hitched a ride to his own show. The musician had gone out for a pre-show ride Saturday when the back tire of his bike popped. “I did not have a cell phone on the bicycle. So I thought, ‘Sh*t,” he recalled that night at his show at Hersheypark Stadium [in Pennsylvania]. “And then a nice lady named Emily rode up in a red car with a bicycle rack on it and gave me a ride on to the gig.” Kraus said she and her boyfriend were running late. But, as she told CNN affiliate WHP, everything happens for a reason. Along the way, they chatted about how the tour was going and his daughter’s summer camp schedules. “We didn’t know how to make conversation with him,” she laughed. Things could have gone so wrong so easily. “Please, Mr. Matthews, you can have whatever you want. My car, my wallet, my The Very Best of Supertramp CD. Anything, as long as you don’t sing ‘When the World Ends.’”

Weather Website Thinks 'Sharknado' Needed To Be Debunked
15 jul 2013 23:59

Erin Cassidy of Accuweather has seen fit to publish an article titled, “Sharknado Debunked: Ridiculous Plotpoints Exposed”. Yes, exposed. Because it was a secret that Sharknado wasn’t 100% scientifically accurate. Thank Sharktopus they cleared that up. The article debunks three “myths” posited by Sharknado, and Cassidy went so far as to consult meteorologist Kristina Baker and get a statement from Greg Skomal, a shark specialist at the Massachusetts Marine Fisheries. She called two experts. About Sharknado. It’s a great time to be alive. You can read the article over at Accuweather if you’re ready to face the possibility that Sharknado wasn’t a documentary. I’ll level with you. This was all just a flimsy excuse to post the picture above of Sharknado in LEGO. Its blocky vengeance is nigh.

22 year old Alexandra Collins took her new boyfriend home to meet her parents but it went less smoothly than she planned… When she arrived home and sat on the garden bench, her 304 lbs (138.6kg) weight caused the bench to splinter and break. She was so embarrassed by the fall that she started eating healthily and exercising almost the very next day. She has now slimmed down to 166 lbs (75.6 kg) in only 18 months and looks better than ever! (She does have a new boyfriend now though as her old boyfriend preferred her as a fat girl!)

16 jul 2013 13:08
Candice Sedighan and her golden retriever Champ is what you can call a real dream team! 20-year-old photographer needs no other model when her dog has enough patience to sit still and pose even with a live butterfly on his nose. Candice got Champ from her dad back when she was 9, but it wasn’t until the age of 13, when she got her first digital camera, that the retriever had a chance to unveil just how photogenic it really was. “I really like to capture the true essence with dogs, which is that they’re always so happy,” she says. “The time Champ and I spend together, he’s just always beaming with happiness and you can really see that through my photos,” says Candice. And yes, every single picture radiates happiness and joy, and by seeing how enthusiastic Champ is, you can practically see the happiness on Candice’s face as well. Candice has already won several photography contests with the joyous pictures of Champ, some of the images were also released as greeting cards. 3D Pencil Drawings by Alessandro Diddi
16 jul 2013 13:14
Italian illustrator Alessandro Diddi erases the line between fiction and reality and makes his 3D drawings leap out of the sheet of paper. Besides light and shadow effects, Alessandro also uses various props, his own hands and even the very pencil he draws with to make his anamorphic drawings come alive when viewed from a certain angle. “I want my drawings to put across the message that the eye can trick the mind and make you believe that there are dimensions that are not really there,” says Alessandro. The artist also stresses that it isn’t ”necessary to consume a large amount of resources to achieve something interesting. All you need is a pencil and something to draw on, and you can create something really magical.” And his work certainly proves his words!

Fine art photos of hairless cats
16 jul 2013 13:22
Pet photographer Serena Hodson gravitates in her work toward the strange and humorous, so it is unsurprising that she would create a series focused on the Sphynx, a hairless breed of cat. The animals carry with them, because of their unusual nakedness, an inherent and undeniable sense of the bizarre, but that is not all that Hodson wanted to focus on.

Jimmy Fallon Conducts Surprise Interview With ‘Michael Jordan’
16 jul 2013 16:01
It’s not often that Michael Jordan does late night, and even less often that he makes an unscheduled appearance. Jimmy Fallon handles the shock of suddenly getting to meet a sports legend like the consummate professional that he is. We were surprised by how candid MJ was — willing to recount old sports stories, even some less than flattering ones. He even brought an autographed gift for Jimmy. Michael Jordan, truly a class act. Wait, hold up. That’s not Michael Jordan. Oh, Kristen Wiig. You truly are a master of impersonations.

Deep Thoughts By Jack Handey Are More than Inspirational
16 jul 2013 16:05
They're hilarious too! The NY Times has an excellent profile of Jack Handey, the former ‘SNL‘ writer who created the absurdly hilarious ‘Deep Thoughts’ series. Anyone who watched ‘SNL’ during the ’90s will remember these brief non-sequiturs that aired between sketches. Unlike most of what’s on ‘SNL,’ ‘Deep Thoughts’ didn’t rely on topical references and therefore doesn’t feel dated decades later. The lack of a face attached to the words, and the fact that his name sounds made up to begin with, led many to believe that Jack Handey was a character created by the ‘SNL’ writing staff. The truth is Handey is a real person who wrote for ‘SNL’ from 1985 to 2002. (He had previously written for Lorne Michaels’ short-lived sketch show ‘The New Show’ and for pal Steve Martin’s TV specials.) During his time at ‘SNL,’ Handey also created such memorable sketches as ‘Toones, the Cat Who Could Drive a Car‘ and the brilliant ‘Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer’ played by Phil Hartman. (The latter is a perfect example of Handey’s knack for mixing the absurd with the mundane.) He’s also an author, having penned several ‘Deep Thoughts’ collections and the new novel ‘The Stench of Honolulu.’ While the ‘Deep Thoughts’ books are a bit tough to track down these days, we thankfully have Hulu to remind us of Handey’s genius. The site has compiled a playlist of 50 ‘Deep Thoughts’ along with a few of Handey’s lesser known ‘Fuzzy Memories.’ Watching ‘Deep Thoughts’ today, it’s interesting how Handey’s offbeat one-liners predicted everything from Twitter to the bizarre anti-humor of Adult Swim. It’s not hard to imagine a joke like “If God dwells inside us, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that’s what He’s getting!” being retweeted multiple times. Some of the best minds on Twitter, like Boobs Radley and Megan Amram, carry on Handey’s tradition of creating perfectly crafted, often absurdist one-liners. It’s too bad Handey (who is 64 for any children of the ’90s who want to feel old) isn’t Tweeting out new ‘Deep Thoughts’ for a generation who thinks quick, random humor on ‘SNL’ begins and ends with the digital shorts.

News Reporter’s Bear Attack Piece Is Completely Ridiculous
16 jul 2013 16:07
You might watch this whole video wondering out loud if it is, in fact, real, or if the internet is playing a joke on you. That is how ridiculous this “what to do if you encounter a bear” news segment is. The segment, which was meant to be helpful, aired on a Providence, Rhode Island, NBC news affiliate, and features a reporter backing slowly into some bushes, screaming and throwing her shoes at the camera. All jokes aside, we now know what to do if we ever encounter a bear, because they are apparently terrified of flip flops. Thanks, NBC!

Paula Deen Is Now a Comic Book Villain, er, Hero We Guess?
16 jul 2013 16:09
Feast your eyes on this! This slightly disturbing drawing is the cover of the forthcoming Paula Deen biography from Bluewater Comics. Bluewater specializes in unauthorized bios of celebrities, and now seems as good a time as any (just kidding, it’s actually the best time) to do an unauthorized biography comic of Paula Deen. We don’t know what the story will be (presumably it depicts her rise to America’s premiere pusher of lard), but hopefully the entire thing will be at least as off-putting as this image of Deen’s disembodied head popping out of a tub of butter. Those eyes. Those terrifying, vacant eyes.

‘Pacific Rim’ Star Charlie Day Is Adorably Nerdy
16 jul 2013 16:12
‘Pacific Rim‘ hit the theaters already, guys, and even if you aren’t into the idea of giant mech fighting huge monsters (and why not?!), you can certainly be on board with the eight tons of man candy in this movie, including Charlie Day. In ‘Pacific Rim,’ Charlie Day plays scientist Newton “Newt” Geiszler, a guy who’s pretty obsessed with the giant alien monsters that are coming out of the ocean to destroy humanity. But he might also be the key to saving us all! You’ll have to watch and find out, and trust me, you want to see this movie on the biggest screen possible. You might also recognize Charlie Day from the hit FX series ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,’ in which he plays a maniacal, wacky guy who’s obsessed with a waitress. (Day happens to be married to the woman who plays the waitress in real life, Mary Elizabeth Ellis.) Day has also starred in ‘Horrible Bosses’ with Jason Sudeikis, Jason Bateman, and Jennifer Aniston, and will reunite with the cast for the upcoming sequel. Some people find Day shrill and annoying so they don’t like him, but we think those people are, you know, idiots. He’s hilarious, energetic, and always a joy to watch on screen because he seems so unpredictable. Also, it doesn’t hurt that he’s super cute.

Actor Michael B. Jordan Makes Us Do a Double-Take
16 jul 2013 16:13
Michael B. Jordan, star of the upcoming drama film ‘Fruitvale Station,’ is so hot that we’re actually doing double-takes on purpose just to look at him a little more. You might remember Jordan from the TV show ‘Friday Night Lights’ (Texas forever!), in which he played a high school football player from the wrong side of the tracks who finds redemption through his passion for sports and a good coach. Or you might have seen him on the HBO series ‘The Wire,’ where he played Wallace (tip: don’t ever ask where Wallace is), a teen forced into being a thug by circumstance and environment. But now Michael has his sights set on the big screen. He starred in the “found footage” sci-fi flick ‘Chronicle,’ and next he stars in the drama ‘Fruitvale Station,’ based on the true story of Oscar Grant — a young man who had a very unfortunate encounter with law enforcement early one morning in Los Angeles. Those of you familiar with the story know you should probably bring some tissues to the theater for this one. Jordan is also going to star in the upcoming ‘Fantastic Four‘ reboot as Johnny Storm — so not only is he hot and talented, but now we get to see him as a sexy superhero? Damn, we say. Damn.

19 Atrocious Photos That Prove Engagement Pics Are Always a Bad Idea
16 jul 2013 16:21
My philosophy with wedding planning is simple — just let the woman have what she wants as long as it doesn’t involve future shame. Engagement photos are future shame. Even if the engagement photo is normal, twenty years from now, it will look ridiculous. Won’t the horribly comical wedding photos be enough? Do we really need a photo to remind the world there is more awful photos to come? People still take awful and awkward engagement photos and there is nothing I can do to stop them…so…I’ll just make fun of them and hope it prevents future photos.

Meet Liam, the Other Sexy Hemsworth
16 jul 2013 16:23
Yeah, Chris Hemsworth from ‘Thor‘ is sexy and all, but did you know he has a super hot kid brother named Liam? He was in a little movie called ‘The Hunger Games.’ Maybe you’ve heard of it. The Australian native has starred in films like ‘Knowing,’ ‘The Last Song,’ and ‘The Hunger Games.’ In ‘The Hunger Games’ series of films, Hemsworth plays Gale Hawthorne, a dude from Katniss’ home district who has a bit of a thing for our heroine. But, you know, she hooked up with that baker’s son named Peeta, so we’re sure there’s going to be some drama in the second movie. (As much as Peeta is adorable and all, we’d totally pick Gale.) Hemsworth co-starred with Miley Cyrus in ‘The Last Song,’ and the two struck up a tabloid-friendly relationship. They’re engaged but have been on and off so many times that no one’s ever quite sure what’s going on with them. That said, she’s still wearing her ring (as of this writing, anyway) so he’s officially off the market for now. Tabloids aside, you can next see sexy Liam Hemsworth in the films ‘Empire State’ and ‘Paranoia.’ And, of course, in the shots below.

Actor Scoot McNairy Makes Us Want to Inch a Little Closer
16 jul 2013 16:26
As if having a name like Scoot isn’t adorable enough, actor Scoot McNairy has the looks to match the name — and the talent, too. He was born and raised in Texas, and started his acting career in the early ’00s with small roles in films like ‘Wonderland’ and ‘Art School Confidential.’ After guest-starring on episodes of ‘Bones’ and ‘The Shield,’ Scoot broke out with the lead role in the 2010 indie sci-fi film ‘Monsters,’ in which he co-starred with his wife, Whitney Able, and showed off his tramp stamp. (A dude with a tramp stamp has to be totally confident in his masculinity, so we support it.) Ever since then, Scoot’s career has been taking off — he’s starred with Brad Pitt in ‘Killing Them Softly,’ with Ben Affleck in ‘Argo’ (which Affleck also directed), and in ‘Promised Land’ with Matt Damon. Those are some heavy-hitting, swoon-worthy gentlemen to work with right there. Scoot can be seen next in the films ’12 Years a Slave’ and ‘Touchy Feely.’

Remarkable Shapes Animated Along Tokyo's Darkened Streets

Japanese visual artist Tao Tajima, has created a rapid fire array of animated geometric shapes that he’s then sent floating along the darkened streets of Tokyo. He’s called the work Night Stroll, but exactly how did he do it? They do say that magicians never reveal their trade secrets, so we can only guess that it’s a combination of 3D projection mapping, camera tracking and a serious amount of patience, skill and countless hours in front of the editing screen. Was it all worth it though? You be the judge and if you can, let us know how you think he was able to create such an awesome array of illusions….

Stalin's Favorite Sculptor Created A Pornographic Alphabet Book [NSFW]
16 jul 2013 16:28
During the course of his lifetime (1881-1952) Sergey Dmitrievich Merkurov became known as THE master of the monumentalist sculptor during the Soviet era. It certainly helped that Joseph Stalin was his biggest supporter, Merkurov produced three of the largest monuments of the dictator, the biggest stood a staggering 160ft tall in Erevan. Along with creating propaganda for the government, he was give the title of ‘People’s Artist of the USSR’ and was even made director at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. But like many artists, he was multi-disciplined and multi-faceted, away from chipping away at marble and stone – he found the time to produce a rather unorthodox alphabet book composed entirely of pornographic images. That’s right, a porno alphabet. Complete with Satan having an orgy. Why? Who knows? And whilst the subject matter is certainly puzzling, the watercolour illustrations themselves masterfully painted and carefully illustrated. The books existence is unique exposé of a man best known for his hammer and chisel, than his brush, inks and devious sexual appetite. We reckon Stalin would have approved though, don’t you?

This Is What Beauty Treatments Looked Like In The 1900's

These days its rare to find a celebrity who hasn’t undergone some form of plastic surgery, from tummy tuck, breast implants, facelift, nose jobs and eyebrow lifts are part and parcel of our ongoing question to remain youthful. It isn’t exactly reassuring that the Viper takes off the same glove twice in the last clip. As for the other clips, they show the meeting of Wolverine and Harada (The Silver Samurai), the meeting of Wolverine and Yukio (dude loves to meet new and interesting people), and what we assume is a nightmare sequence involving Jean Grey. Am I supposed to laugh at that Jean Grey clip? Were they trying to make it not seem cheesy? To quote Jean Grey, it’s too late.
