Another Harlem Shake Video Ends In Flames
10 may 2013 00:53
Like any good meme, the Harlem Shake was old before it even had a chance to be young, probably because of the fact that the dance being performed in thousands upon thousands of videos was not actually the Harlem Shake. But a little thing like accuracy has never stopped the Internet from creating something and then exploiting and milking it into complete nothingness until it’s nothing but an email that your mom will send to you in eight months. And so we thought that we had seen the end of the Harlem Shake several weeks ago when one attempt at this zany fad resulted in a person falling into a massive campfire. Alas, the memo hasn’t made the full rounds, as we have a new Harlem Shake video on YouTube, and it ends rather similarly to that last one.

Watch The Sheen Bros Beat Michael Jordan In A Basketball Challenge
10 may 2013 00:52
If Obama had an emergency meeting with Congress and initiated a Youtube tax today, I wouldn’t object because YouTube is doing God’s work by providing us with videos like this one. The good folks at Grantland dug up this video of Michael Jordan in a basketball challenge against Martin Sheen and his up-and-comer son Charlie. The video is from 1988 and you can tell it’s old by the fact MJ isn’t wearing his JNCO jeans and Charlie isn’t backstroking Scrooge McDuck style in coke and Hep B. In the video, Jordan tries to beat the Sheens in a three-part competition where he sets ridiculous handicaps for himself (free throws with his eyes closed? Two on one to 10 with the Sheens spotted five points?) and actually loses. You just have to imagine His Airness was secretly fuming over the fact he lost. If he didn’t immediately challenge them after cameras stopped rolling, he may still hold a grudge against the Sheens to this day. In fact, Jordan was so angry about losing that he vowed if he ever did any work with one of the Sheens he’d wear a Hitler mustache and make everyone go along with it. You go, MJ. You always win.

‘Melinda Brown Duncan Is The New Charles Ramsey,’ Says Idiots
10 may 2013 00:47
Remember Antoine Dodson’s Internet explosion? Of course you do. And then right afterwards we had Sweet Brown and the guy who lost his cheeseburger. Why? Because stations were essentially going out looking for the craziest-looking people they could find and get a million YouTube views as if that’d make me want to tune into the news in Des Moines or wherever. Well, it’s started up again. This journalistic blaxploitation has reared its ugly head now that Charles Ramsey is more famous for his perm than the fact he saved a few lives. The first big video comes out of Detroit where a news station tracked down this woman – Melinda Brown Duncan – and let her rant about whatever the hell she wanted to talk about for a minute. Of course, if this were a pre-YouTube era, the footage would have landed on the cutting-room floor. But in an attempt to get YouTube views, she got her say on the air. And now outlets are calling her the next Ramsey Brown because Black people. Obviously. So get ready for the auto tune videos, laughs and good times. I’ll just kick back, watch Amos N’ Andy and thank goodness we don’t live in those times anymore. Whew.

Couple Breaks Up in Epic Kiss Cam Dispute
08 may 2013 15:43
Real or not real, this is officially the best part of going to a Grizzlies game — watching people break up on the Kiss Cam. Unless, of course, you’re the guy who got dumped, in which case this is probably the worst part of going to a Grizzlies game. Let this be a lesson to all of you who disrespect the Kiss Cam — you could wind up walking out alone with a soaking wet shirt. Just hang up the cell phone and kiss the girl. Or she could be walking out with a mascot on her arm, which is kind of creepy and gross, now that we think about it.

What drugs did they forget and what video games would be their equivalent? Let us know in the comments.

Text Trolling is the Best Invention in the World!
08 may 2013 14:23
Due to the rise of online classifieds like Craigslist, people routinely leave their personal phone numbers up in the hopes that someone will inquire about their services. And when you throw in someone like the owner of the Tumblr, Textastrophe, are often great. The owner has had text conversations with movers, clowns, football coaches, computer repairmen and pet sitters (to name a few), just to build their hopes up and slowly, and hilariously, knock them down.

Jennie Lamere Invents Twivo, A Program Preventing Twitter TV Spoilers
09 may 2013 13:45
For all of you, myself included, who often have to avoid Twitter on nights when your favorite TV shows are airing and you can’t watch them live as they air for fear of having them spoiled by the people you follow, well, a 17 year-old girl may have just changed your life. Yes, last month Jennie Lamere invented Twivo, a program that allows Twitter users to censor tweets containing mentions of TV show names and/or the names of characters from those shows. Lamere presented Twivo at a national coding competition — the TVnext Hack event in Boston that was held on April 27 — and she beat out roughly 80 other competitors, all of whom were male, to win the grand prize. You go girl! Good work!

The Formosan termites flew across the New Orleans area in their tens of thousands last night
27 may 2013 10:58

New Orleans was struck by tens of thousands of swarming Formosan termites on Wednesday night causing hundreds of thousands of people's skin to crawl. Resembling something out of a creepy disaster movie, the termites made for any car headlights, streetlights or lit homes they could find in residential or commercial areas. Usually the termites swarm like clockwork at the beginning of May, but with cooler temperatures in the New Orleans area combined with drier air the termite outbreak was delayed until last night's warmer conditions.

'Iron Man 3' Opening Title Credits Are Awesome
09 may 2013 13:49
Apparently the only people who didn’t see Iron Man 3 this weekend are me and the Geico caveman family, and even they sneaked into a screening of the film after watching The Iceman. "The third Tony Stark movie from Marvel Studios enjoyed the second-best opening in box-office history, grossing an estimated $175.3 million in its debut weekend, Disney said Sunday. That debut could help start to reverse a very slow year in local theaters, where revenues are down about 12% from 2012." according to the LA Times. The only film with a higher opening: The Avengers. (Will Shane Black’s next movie be a modern retelling of Titus Andronicus?) Anyway, “Rongxin” uploaded the “unused original title credits for Iron Man 3“ to Reddit earlier today, and while I have no idea what the actual credits look like, I can’t imagine they were better than this. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/cotown/la-fi-ct-box-office-iron-man-3-rockets-to-secondbest-opening-ever-20130505,0,1748545.story

Game Of Thrones Season 3 Alignment Chart
28 may 2013 14:52
Back in the heady infographic days of 2010, Dungeons & Dragons parody alignment charts were all the rage, with every show and cult film getting their own variation to the amusement of plenty of people who swore to had never heard of an alignment chart before. Game of Thrones season one was the recipient of this very accurate version, and now with the internet not knowing what to do with itself the week following a GOT break, r/GameOfThrones came up with the below new variation to pass the time. Nothing groundbreaking, but if you’re into that sort thing, by all means take a look. Something tells me book readers may have some commentary.

'Historically Inaccurate' Tale Of How KISS Wrote 'Beth'
08 may 2013 13:55
Despite being one of the world’s most recognizable bands, if for reasons that have nothing to do with the quality of their music (which IS quality), KISS only has two top-ten hits in the U.S.: “Forever” and “Beth,” their mopey power ballad from 1976′s Destroyer. It’s KISS’s “Angie,” except with more references to meatloaf. Or at least according to “anonymous content,” who made a short film about the song that “chronicles the completely fictitious story of [its] inspiration. The Peter Criss character’s dialogue stays true to the song’s lyrics.” They should make a video for “Love Gun” next. No idea what that song’s about.

'As I Lay Dying' Frontman Tried to Hire Someone to Kill His Wife
08 may 2013 13:28
Apparently hit men are cheaper than divorces, because singer Tim Lambesis from thrash metal band As I Lay Dying allegedly opted for a contract kill instead of just splitting from his wife. Lambesis was arrested for commissioning the murder of his wife from an undercover cop. (Bro, don’t you know they’re always cops?) Christian — yes, seriously — metal vocalist Lambesis, 32, was supposedly determined to off his wife Meggan, who’s also the mother of his three adopted kids. The New York Daily News reports that Lambesis was arrested for commissioning to commit a murder yesterday (May 7) in Oceanside, Calif. in a sting operation. Meggan had served him with divorce papers in September 2012. Anyone who doubted her decision is probably now eating several heaping helpings of crow. “The information came to us late last week,” Jan Caldwell of the San Diego Police Department said of the murder plot. “We acted quickly on it. I believe we averted a great tragedy.” Lambesis will appear in court for his arraignment in the next couple days. Perhaps when he’s behind bars he’ll have time to learn that life is not a Tarantino movie full of secretive hit men. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/tim-lambesis-whack-wife-authorities-article-1.1337968

7 Facts You Might Not Know About The Cast Of 'Mad Men'
08 may 2013 13:10
We are six seasons into Mad Men, and by this time, if you follow the series and its actors closely, there’s probably very little you don’t already know about them (hence, the “Might Not Know” in the headline). But there’s probably still a few nuggets about the cast you don’t know, and if you’re new to the series, many of the facts here may be new to you. In the process of putting together this post, I actually found out a few things myself (number one blew my mind, as did the entries on the guy who plays Abe and the guy who plays Bert Cooper). Otherwise, consider it something of a compendium of Mad Men fun facts, which you can use to impress your mother, who just got into Mad Men on Netflix.

A Brief History Of Zooey Deschanel's Musical Moments
07 may 2013 17:11
For a good year or two, Zooey Deschanel was one of the most polarizing names in pop culture. She can still induce a good argument or two (Zooey > Emily), but now it's more of a battle than an all-out war. That's what starring in one of TV's best sitcoms, New Girl, will do for you. The Fox sitcom airs its season finale next week, but Zooey's also making the publicity rounds this week for another project, She & Him, her band with M. Ward. Today, She & Him released their third album, Volume 3, and it's by far their best. It's catchy and wistful, seductive and innocent, if ultimately lightweight. Zooey's voice isn't a stunner, as anyone who's seen ANY of her movies (minus The Happening, which damn) already knows, but there's enough charisma and genuine emotion in it to disregard the imperfections. Having the technically impressive M. Ward, who provides Volume 3's eyes-wide-open pop-folk sound, around helps, too. It's the billowing vintage dress of albums. In honor of Volume 3, let's take a look at Zooey's long musical history, be it in movies, TV, or albums.

'Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger' Gets A 'Borderlands'-Esque Trailer
07 may 2013 17:08
Call of Juarez is going back to its Western roots with the digital release of Gunslinger, and essentially it looks like what would happen if Gearbox made Red Dead Revolver. Note that this is not a complaint. It’s pretty violent, and it takes more than a few cues from spaghetti Westerns, including what appears to be the obligatory Ku Klux Klan hunt (those would be the guys in the red masks). Interestingly, the trailer doesn’t offer much in the way of gameplay info, but there’s plenty of that to be found on the game’s website. Apparently you’ll be able to level up in different firearms disciplines, unleash combos, and be able to dodge bullets. Also, you’ll kill real outlaws of the Old West, which raises a question of why nobody’s ever heard of this guy, but anyway. This is arriving on 360, PS3, and PC at the end of the month. We’ll be curious to see at what price point and just how long the game itself is. Although we’ve got to admit, twenty bucks to kill racist d-bags is kind of a no-brainer. Check out the trailer in all its gory, er, glory:

Famous Rap Lyrics Quoted On NYC Street Corners

He’s taken references from songs by the likes of Mos Def, Nas, Redman, Busta Rhymes and even the mighty Jay-Z and situated them around all the various boroughs and street corners of the city. He’s called the project Rap Quotes, just how long they will remain before the local council pulls them down is up for debate. Personally we think they should stay, taken in or out of context, they are a tribute to the area and serve as an acknowledgment of New York City’s impact on musical culture. http://www.rapquote.com/

This Hospital Has A Wonderful Secret Lullaby Factory

Going to hospital, either as a patient or visitor can often be a strange and stressful time. Stark waiting rooms, fluorescent lighting and a fear of the unknown come together to often create an atmosphere that is at best slightly unnerving. That’s why a this fantastic & imaginative project by visual artists Maria Smith and Je Ahn of Studio Weave is such a welcome idea – it changes the entire dynamic. Located directly across from the famous Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London is the ‘Lullaby Factory’, a series of pipes, tubes and speakers that rise 10 stories high and spread out around 105ft. Echoing within them is a series of soothing and cheerful sounds composed by Jessica Curry, not totally dissimilar to wind chimes. In order to hear them, you have to put your ear up to the speakers themselves – a surprise and secret melody for those who care to explore.

9 Sloths Who Are Working for the Weekend

We love sloths. There’s no question. But we can’t spend all day looking at them online– sometimes we have to take a break to order food from Seamless or run a damp sponge over our body. Worse, sometimes we actually have to leave the apartment. To combat this, we’ve taken sloths and given them everyday jobs, so we can imagine the people we have to talk to are sloths while we’re talking to them. That’s normal, right? Plus, it gives the sloth community a better reputation. They aren’t sloth-ful, they’re work-ful. (Yes, that’s not a word. Look, sloths in people clothes!)

Behind the scenes Only God Forgives footage, with Ryan Gosling

If you’re anything like everyone I know, you’re probably already semi-tumescent or pre-ovulating for Only God Forgives, director Nicolas Winding Refn’s follow up to Drive, once again starring everyone’s favorite sweet-smelling Canadian, Ryan Gosling (if not, educate yourself with the trailers below). The Only God Forgives Facebook page recently posted a new behind-the-scenes video, and, well… let me see if I can explain what’s so great about it: Basically, it’s a whole minute of a weirdo Danish guy in a kilt/sarong, earnestly philosophizing about the nature of violence and sex, while an amused Baby Goose makes cute faces at the camera like Jim from The Office while a team of loyal Thai crewmembers scurry around doing their jobs happily like Keebler Elves. There’s just something magical about it. The movie looks great, but I could watch just these two hanging out together for hours.
