Historic Church Transformed with Graffiti Art by Hense
21 jan 2013 11:04
Amazing things happen when architecture and art meet halfway! Atlanta-based artist Hense chose a historic church from this area as his canvas and painted it in vibrant flashy colors. The church became a multi-angled mural of abstract figures and dynamic shades. The church’s walls were covered in graffiti like concrete buildings that you pass by almost everyday. The only difference here is that Hence’s project has absolutely no issues with the law. The exterior of the church changed completely, every surface and every little corner got a new bold look. Hense says that “Taking an existing object like the church and painting the entire thing re-contextualizes it and makes it a sculptural object. With projects like this one, we really try to use the existing architecture as inspiration for the direction of the painting.” Looks like this time the art/architecture collision in a form of the street art embodies a fine art work.

Defrosting a Frozen Building
21 jan 2013 11:03
This cold storage facility in Chicago may not draw your attention from the outside, but had you entered the building a few months ago, you’d be surprised to see what was inside. After nine decades of cold storage and lack of proper maintenance, the whole interior was full of cave-like stalagmites and stalactites. Once the Fulton Market Cold Storage Company, which was renting the premises, decided to move out, it was sold to a bike component manufacturer SRAM. However, in order to use their new space, SRAM had to defrost the building first. Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture were hired do the work, however, such sight couldn’t go unarchived. This is why photographer Gary Jensen was asked to photograph this indoor ice age phenomena. The video at the end of the article shows the defrosting process, where you see the team using propane heaters to dissolve the ice crystals.

Frighteningly Realistic Animal Chairs by Maximo Riera
21 jan 2013 11:02
Are you looking for a new set of chairs? Then take a look at this almost alive Animal Chair collection by Máximo Riera. The collection constitutes a diverse range of species, including octopus, walrus and rhino. Each chair retains the animal’s natural vitality whilst being totally biologically accurate in their appearance. It is homage to these animals and the whole animal kingdom which inhabits our planet, as an attempt to reflect and capture the beauty of nature in each living thing. The main reason Maximo Riera chose to create a chair is because it is an everyday object, something taken as common and banal in our lives. “Whilst considering the chair’s basic functionality, I also wanted to bring it alive, make it more present and create a stronger link between the spectator, the piece and the surrounding space,” says the artist.

Sunny Photographs

Alexa Singer is a fashion, lifestyle and beauty photographer, based in Cape Town, where she has family and dogs, and commutes all over for work. Her work is diverse as she loves imagery in general. She has recently gone into moving imagery with the help of the 5d, which has made movie making affordable for everyone. She tries to bring some sort of realness and emotion to what she does, and although she greatly admires the wonderful world of post, prefers images in their truer form. When she travels, she takes reportage shots for pleasure.

Dizzying Building by Stefano Skarselli
21 jan 2013 10:12
Italian photographer Stefano Scarselli, a. k. a. Nespyxel, has captured lots of amazing things during his career. Most of all he liked houses with courtyards (like the famous Batlló built by Antonio Gaudi for the Spanish magnate Josep Batlló y Casanovas) and unusual staircases. Only a couple of dozen of pictures by this photographer can be attributed to the subject, because of the rarity of objects.

Ancient Roman Coins with Sex Scenes
21 jan 2013 10:10
This is a spintria. They were used in ancient Rome to request and pay for different “services” in brothels and from prostitutes on the street. Since there were a lot of foreigners coming to the city that did not speak the language and most of the prostitutes were slaves captured from other places the coins made the transactions easy and efficient. One side of these coins showed what the buyer wanted and the other showed the amount of money to be paid for the act.

Travel Destination, Ukraine

In a bay on the northern shores of the Black Sea, the Soviet army maintained an elaborate submarine base throughout much of the Cold War.  Now a museum, this abandoned submarine base in the town of Balaklava, Ukraine is often explored by locals and tourists alike.  During the war, Soviet submarines were constructed elsewhere, transported to this base by rail, then deployed into the Black Sea and beyond for covert underwater operations.  The tunnels of the submarine base reached far and deep into the mountain above, providing enough room for many submarines and their crew up through the end of the Cold War.

Photoshop? Nope, in 1963 People Had to Really Get Creative
18 jan 2013 15:19

This 1963 fashion series by Melvin Sokolsky for Harper's Bazaar magazine is one for the books. To create the iconic "Bubble" images, model Simone d'Aillencourt had to climb into a plexiglass ball that was actually suspended in the air by a cable and crane.

The bubble in the series is made of Plastivew and is composed of two hemispheres with a 1/8-inch crack to allow for breathing room. Then the bubble was hung from a very thin, but strong cable. (It could have also held up a Cadillac!) This was probably one of the easiest shoots I’ve ever done in my life because there were no hair or makeup interruptions. No one could touch her in the bubble—so it was just her and I creating the images.” — Melvin Sokolosky

Burning Man Amazing Sculptures
18 jan 2013 08:00

Burning Man is a week-long annual event held in the Black Rock Desert in the United States. The event begins on the last Monday in August, and ends on the first Monday in September, which coincides with the American Labor Day holiday. The 2012 Burning Man Festival took place between August 27 and September 3. It takes its name from the ritual burning of a large wooden effigy on Saturday evening. The event is described by many participants as an experiment in community, art, radical self-expression, and radicalself-reliance.[1][2][3][4] Burning Man is organized by Black Rock City, LLC. In 2010, 51,515 people attended Burning Man.[5] 2011 attendance was capped at 50,000 participants and the event sold out[6] on July 24. In April 2011, Larry Harvey announced that the organization had begun the process of transitioning management of the festival over to a new non-profit called the "Burning Man Project".

Screw democracy, right? ;)

Everyday Habits That Might Be Killing You
18 jan 2013 09:23
It seems that most habits these days aren’t good for you. Once upon a moonbeam, cigars and opium and casual racism were perfectly acceptable staples of Western society. Not any more. They have joined a long list of human behaviour that is at best frowned upon and at worst downright dangerous. Perhaps sunscreen, breathing indoors and smiling will one day join that list too.

Captivating Hyperrealistic Pencil Drawings of Glistening Eyes
18 jan 2013 09:06
What is it about eyes that are so fascinating? Regardless of the medium they're depicted in, whether it be a drawing, painting, or photo, these tiny orbs that give us the gift of sight also, ironically, provide a feast for the eyes. When executed properly, eyes in art can evoke emotions and provide inspiration. It is especially stimulating to see the works of brilliant artists like Jasper Branse and Brian Schmalzriedt who are able to produce such captivating, hyperrealistic renditions of these supposed windows to the soul with a few simple tools—pencils, erasers, tissues, charcoal, and a lot of skill.

Sweet Sluggo Chalk Art by David Zinn
18 jan 2013 09:04
If you happen to live in Ann Arbor, you may already be familiar with a sweet little resident there that seems to randomly pop up on the streets. His name is Sluggo and he's the work of David Zinn, an artist that just so happens to love placing Sluggo in some highly imaginative scenes. The happy green fellow has appeared on sidewalks, walls and ledges since 2008, "originally as a chalk drawing of a child that took a strange turn," Zinn writes on Behance. "He has since developed a widespread reputation as a semi-subterranean jack of few trades with flexible personal architecture and a fondness for flying pigs." Sluggo even has own Tumblr blog called Sluggo on the Street. I think I just fell in love.

Voodoo Festival
18 jan 2013 06:18
The deified residents of the Temple of Pythons, when released to find food, sometimes slither across the road into a Catholic church that once hosted Pope Benedict XVI. The local priest, the snake handlers say, is always good enough to call or bring the gorging reptiles back to their own spiritual home. This is life in Ouidah, a mecca of spirits and gods worshipped by practitioners of Voodoo, a recognized religion in this former French colony in West Africa that is home to 9 million people. The religion has its own pope -- or two, depending on who you ask -- whose reign dates back to the 1400s and can be seen about town in his SUV. This past Thursday, local banks and the post office closed as the town celebrated its annual Voodoo Festival, an event increasingly drawing curious foreigners. With its mix of beliefs and traditions, the Voodoo practiced here shows both a clash of cultures and the ability for ancient traditional beliefs to adapt to modern life. Jean Zossoujbo, a guide at the Temple of Pythons, shows a python to a visitor to the temple in Ouidah, Benin, on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013.
