In the Tree Magic Folk Art Etsy store, wooden Mexican folk art sculptures of stylized animals come to life with vibrant colors and whimsical features. The sculptures are created by residents of Oaxaca, decorated with elements characteristic of folk art from the state —designs made of brightly colored dots and animals with exaggerated ears, tails and facial features. The artists carve the figures from copal wood and decorate them with acrylic paint. Most of the figures sell for between $100...

Austin, Connor and Trevor Bartz, three brothers living in New Brighton, Minnesota, love to create snow sculptures in their front yard every winter, but these aren’t your run-of-the-mill snowmen – this year, they created a detailed 12-foot-tall sea turtle! The boys begin their work by piling up snow into a crude pile, which they then carefully sculpt into their desired form over the course of several weeks. They’re quite devoted workers – this year’s sea turtle sculpture took them 300 hours!

From a distance, these simply look like bird statues, with jewel-like colors and curious expressions. Up close, though, the cute birds turn into breathtaking works of detailed mosaic art. Each one is "feathered" in a series of intricately arranged glass pieces, crystals, and metal. The eyes and beaks are also formed from larger glass pieces, and the mosaics are patterned to mimic the natural patterns of feathers.

My name is Tomas Vitanovsky and I was born in the Czech Republic around 45 years ago. From an early age I’ve loved cars and motorbikes, and this passion has carried throughout my life. As an occasional motorbike racer and full-time motorbike mechanic, I started to love working with steel. One day, I was throwing out some used engine parts of a motorbike I had finished when I got hit by an idea – I could weld them together! That was when bearings, gears, chains and outlets started to be...

When artist Igor Verniy sees scrap metal, he sees not junk, but a world of possibility. Once a student of mechanical engineering, Verniy took his knowledge of machinery and fabrication and turned it into an artistic trade, creating charming, unique animals and fantasy creatures from old bike chains, silverware and all kinds of scrap metal. Not only are the results charming in a steampunk sort of way, they're also impressive feats of engineering; all are fully articulated and can be...

This time, the artist tried his hand with a different kind of material, stainless steel. It was his first time using stainless steel and it was also the biggest monument he had ever created. From...

Gardener John Brooker has spent the past ten years meticulously shaping a 100-foot-long, 10-foot-tall hedge into the shape of a giant dragon. The enormous beast has slowly emerged over time and has since become quite a notable landmark on the grounds of Frizzleton Farm near King’s Lynn.

Most people would consider hubcaps to be junk. The side of the road and numerous junkyards are littered with them. One man, however, found a brilliant way to use this “junk” and transform it into incredible works of art.
He goes by Hubcap Creatures on Deviant Art, but he also has a website and Facebook page. The most incredible thing about his sculptures is that once they are finished, you can barely tell what materials he used to make the metallic, intricate creations. Just have a look for...

Belgian artist Wim Delvoye creates large-scale sculptures of vehicles typically found on construction sites, using an intricate lattice design. Inspired by Gothic architecture, the massive laser-cut Corten steel structures break the boundaries between constructing tools and resulting art. They appear to be one and the same, each truck mimicking a sort of mobile cathedral.

Statues are by definition boring. Since, you know, they basically just stand there. However, things can get interesting when their flesh and blood counterparts get creative…

If (like many) you found Singapore’s Frightening Theme Park Dedicated To Chinese Mythology a little too confronting, but still want to seek out the unusual and strange, you could always pay a visit to the “Magic Forest” in Imatra, Finland.
Whether by choice or just bad design, it’s a forest littered with unsettling stone mannequins whose’s expressions are almost as creepy as the scenarios they’re placed in. How about a moustached made in a sharp blue seat, handcuffing a teenager to a tree and beating him with a cane? Or maybe you’d be more interested in a tall lanky local flasher?

Like a scene from a fantasy movie, a dilapidated room that appears to have been literally ripped out of a building remains suspended in mid air above Nantes, France. Its walls were torn apart, revealing bricks below the plaster, and wood floors reveal the joists inside. The floating room is accessible via a ladder. The gravity defying surreal installation is the work of Argentinean artist Leandro Erlich. The large-scale piece, called “Monte-meubles – L’ultime déménagement” (literally - The Furniture Lift – The Ultimate Moving Out), was created for the biannual Le Voyage a Nantes, an art festival which turns the entire French city into an art gallery.
