Sooo Ironic: Hipster Superheroines
17 jul 2013 13:31
Jk jk there’s nothing ironic about this. Not even by the Alanis Morissette definiton which, I think we can all agree, is very loose. Ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife isn’t ironic so much as it is just bad luck. Amrite? Imrite. Artist Elizabeth Beals illustrated this series of DC Comic superheroines as hipsters. There’s Wonderwoman, Catwoman, Supergirl, and more! So many more. Okay, more like 4 more. The ladies are all dressed up in the typical hipster garb aka cheap thrift shop finds paired with overpriced shit you can buy at Urban Outfitters. All these hipster-heroines are missing is a pack of American Spirits, a 12-pack of PBR, and a fixie. Oh, plus a dose of pretension and slightly inflated ego.

Giant Dragon Skull Appears on Charmouth Beach
17 jul 2013 13:18
On an ordinary day in Dorset, on Charmouth beach, visitors were surprisingly met with an enormous skeletal remain of what appears to be… a dragon? The Jurassic skull, said to be the size of a London bus, seems to have appeared out of nowhere. Now, the beach, which is "famous for its treasure trove of dinosaur fossils," certainly has an easy find for fossil hunting archeologists, though they may be dismayed to find that the "artifact" is, in fact, a sculpture.

The 8 Most Recognizable Guitar Riffs Of The 2000s
16 jul 2013 16:55
There's a difference between "good" and "recognizable." Not that the two can't be mutually exclusive, but, well, let's put it this way: you'd probably notice Kim Kardashian in a crowd before you would Vince Gilligan, not because you think she's somehow "better" than him, but because she's Kim Kardashian, magazine star/The Soup punching bag, and he's Vince Gilligan, the humble, pasty showrunner. Kim is the "recognizable" -- Vince is the "good." Today, in taking a look at some of the most immediately discernible guitar riffs of the 2000s, I want to stress that just because Metallica or Mastodon aren't on this list doesn't mean they can't still write the crunchiest of motherf*cking riffs (they can); it's because nothing, for instance, Metallica has released this century is as rapidly perceptible to the general listening public as what Muse put to the tape back in 2001. Though the Muse riff is great.

You Can't Hide From 'The Wolverine' Videos
16 jul 2013 16:47
The Wolverine opens in fewer than two weeks, but we feel as though we’ve seen it already after the many trailers, clips, and featurettes released so far. Now Fox has released four more clips for us to nervously watch while muttering, “please don’t suck, please don’t suck“. It isn’t exactly reassuring that the Viper takes off the same glove twice in the last clip. As for the other clips, they show the meeting of Wolverine and Harada (The Silver Samurai), the meeting of Wolverine and Yukio (dude loves to meet new and interesting people), and what we assume is a nightmare sequence involving Jean Grey. Am I supposed to laugh at that Jean Grey clip? Were they trying to make it not seem cheesy? To quote Jean Grey, it’s too late.

This Is What Beauty Treatments Looked Like In The 1900's
16 jul 2013 16:34
These days its rare to find a celebrity who hasn’t undergone some form of plastic surgery, from tummy tuck, breast implants, facelift, nose jobs and eyebrow lifts are part and parcel of our ongoing question to remain youthful. But back at the beginning of the 20th century, whilst the desire for everlasting youth and enduring beauty were a constant, it certainly took a vastly different form. During the 1900′s-1920′s, individuals continued to be heavily influenced by Victorian societies belief that it was simply your ‘duty’ as a woman to look beautiful. It wasn’t a choice, it was a lifestyle, one which had an entire industry of tools, devices and machines designed to help you keep up with others expectations. And it was those ‘beauty treatments’ that continued to be peddled and pushed to whole new generation of consumers at the beginning of the 20th century. And whilst these days women might dabble in facial scrubs, cucumber eye patches and the occasional Botox injection – their predecessors had to endure all manner of wacky devices with the sole aim of conforming to the superficial and transient whims of their peers. It’s a peculiar look into our past and our enduring obsession with perfection.

Stalin's Favorite Sculptor Created A Pornographic Alphabet Book [NSFW]
16 jul 2013 16:28
During the course of his lifetime (1881-1952) Sergey Dmitrievich Merkurov became known as THE master of the monumentalist sculptor during the Soviet era. It certainly helped that Joseph Stalin was his biggest supporter, Merkurov produced three of the largest monuments of the dictator, the biggest stood a staggering 160ft tall in Erevan. Along with creating propaganda for the government, he was give the title of ‘People’s Artist of the USSR’ and was even made director at the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. But like many artists, he was multi-disciplined and multi-faceted, away from chipping away at marble and stone – he found the time to produce a rather unorthodox alphabet book composed entirely of pornographic images. That’s right, a porno alphabet. Complete with Satan having an orgy. Why? Who knows? And whilst the subject matter is certainly puzzling, the watercolour illustrations themselves masterfully painted and carefully illustrated. The books existence is unique exposé of a man best known for his hammer and chisel, than his brush, inks and devious sexual appetite. We reckon Stalin would have approved though, don’t you?

If there is one thing we love more than girls, it’s ‘Star Wars.’ Our friends over at Nerdist put together an amusing little video featuring the one and only Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian singing his heart out at the Cantina on Tatooine. Jason Schwartzman, Patton Oswalt, Carrie Keagan, Chris Hardwick and Mike Phirman make cameos because famous nerds all live in the same apartment building and hang out to do stuff like this, like, all the time.

Paula Deen Is Now a Comic Book Villain, er, Hero We Guess?
16 jul 2013 16:09
Feast your eyes on this! This slightly disturbing drawing is the cover of the forthcoming Paula Deen biography from Bluewater Comics. Bluewater specializes in unauthorized bios of celebrities, and now seems as good a time as any (just kidding, it’s actually the best time) to do an unauthorized biography comic of Paula Deen. We don’t know what the story will be (presumably it depicts her rise to America’s premiere pusher of lard), but hopefully the entire thing will be at least as off-putting as this image of Deen’s disembodied head popping out of a tub of butter. Those eyes. Those terrifying, vacant eyes.

Deep Thoughts By Jack Handey Are More than Inspirational
16 jul 2013 16:05
They're hilarious too! The NY Times has an excellent profile of Jack Handey, the former ‘SNL‘ writer who created the absurdly hilarious ‘Deep Thoughts’ series. Anyone who watched ‘SNL’ during the ’90s will remember these brief non-sequiturs that aired between sketches. Unlike most of what’s on ‘SNL,’ ‘Deep Thoughts’ didn’t rely on topical references and therefore doesn’t feel dated decades later. The lack of a face attached to the words, and the fact that his name sounds made up to begin with, led many to believe that Jack Handey was a character created by the ‘SNL’ writing staff. The truth is Handey is a real person who wrote for ‘SNL’ from 1985 to 2002. (He had previously written for Lorne Michaels’ short-lived sketch show ‘The New Show’ and for pal Steve Martin’s TV specials.) During his time at ‘SNL,’ Handey also created such memorable sketches as ‘Toones, the Cat Who Could Drive a Car‘ and the brilliant ‘Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer’ played by Phil Hartman. (The latter is a perfect example of Handey’s knack for mixing the absurd with the mundane.) He’s also an author, having penned several ‘Deep Thoughts’ collections and the new novel ‘The Stench of Honolulu.’ While the ‘Deep Thoughts’ books are a bit tough to track down these days, we thankfully have Hulu to remind us of Handey’s genius. The site has compiled a playlist of 50 ‘Deep Thoughts’ along with a few of Handey’s lesser known ‘Fuzzy Memories.’ Watching ‘Deep Thoughts’ today, it’s interesting how Handey’s offbeat one-liners predicted everything from Twitter to the bizarre anti-humor of Adult Swim. It’s not hard to imagine a joke like “If God dwells inside us, I sure hope He likes enchiladas, because that’s what He’s getting!” being retweeted multiple times. Some of the best minds on Twitter, like Boobs Radley and Megan Amram, carry on Handey’s tradition of creating perfectly crafted, often absurdist one-liners. It’s too bad Handey (who is 64 for any children of the ’90s who want to feel old) isn’t Tweeting out new ‘Deep Thoughts’ for a generation who thinks quick, random humor on ‘SNL’ begins and ends with the digital shorts.

3D Pencil Drawings by Alessandro Diddi
16 jul 2013 13:14
Italian illustrator Alessandro Diddi erases the line between fiction and reality and makes his 3D drawings leap out of the sheet of paper. Besides light and shadow effects, Alessandro also uses various props, his own hands and even the very pencil he draws with to make his anamorphic drawings come alive when viewed from a certain angle. “I want my drawings to put across the message that the eye can trick the mind and make you believe that there are dimensions that are not really there,” says Alessandro. The artist also stresses that it isn’t ”necessary to consume a large amount of resources to achieve something interesting. All you need is a pencil and something to draw on, and you can create something really magical.” And his work certainly proves his words!

'Deus Ex: The Fall' Is A Great Game On The Wrong Platform
15 jul 2013 23:57

One of the problems console developers have had with the boom in tablet gaming is that they all look at tablets, with the wealth of possibilities a touchscreen offers for innovative control schemes, and decide “We should try and make this a controller!” It never works. And Deus Ex: The Fall is a superb example of that, alas. The game itself is great in almost every respect. It’s a bit like the PS2 predecessor Deus Ex: Human Revolution never had: It’s got sidequests, multiple weapons, plenty of augments, a beefy-for-mobile running time of six to seven hours, and branching story options that give it replay value. It’s not as rich and complex as the game it’s based on, but it’s richer and more complex than most mobile games, or console games for that matter, bother with. It is also a fairly linear game compared to its console counterpart, but it’s a game you’ll play twice for seven bucks.

'X-Force' Is Headed To The Big Screen, We Handicap The Roster

Bust out your pouch vests and your gigantic pulse weapons: Fox is bringing X-Force to the big screen. The question is, though, which version of X-Force? For those unfamiliar, X-Force is essentially the X-Men's black ops unit. Whatever situations the X-Men can't touch, or might require a show of force the team is unwilling to make, X-Force deals with. At least in theory; this being Marvel that concept is a bit more fluid than one might think. Here's what we know about the movie; according to Rob Liefeld, this has been in the works since March:

But it looks like Avalanche is going to have you breaking necks and snapping wrists when you’re not smashing cars to pieces:

Beyoncé Tells Concertgoer To 'Put That Damn Camera Down'

But in a good way, not a bad that-tall-guy-with-the-glasses-is-saving-a-mental-picture-of-Beyoncé’s-ass way. During a concert on Friday, Bey invited the audience to sing along with her to “Irreplaceable,” but she noticed someone who was having none of the follow-the-bouncing-butt fun: he was too busy filming the show. And I quote, in a wise tone not unlike the YYYs’, “See, you can’t even sing because you’re too busy taping. I’m right in your face, baby. You gotta seize this moment baby! Put that damn camera down!” Good on you, Beyoncé, for throwing down the gauntlet (even if it’s for shady reasons) — now do something about the backpackers.

Portishead Is Upset At Weeknd Song Sample Without Permission
15 jul 2013 23:48

The news here should be “yay for new Weeknd”; instead, it’s “yay for new Weeknd…except for the part where he sampled a song without another artist’s permission.” After Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. the Weeknd, revealed another sensual, bruised track from his sophomore album, Kiss Land, Portishead guitarist Geoff Barrow tweeted: When someone asks to sample you and you refuse they should have the respect as a fellow artist to not use it. This is unfortunate if true, though I understand Tesfaye’s temptation; every song should sample Portishead’s ice-cold trip-hop, with consent, of course. Still, I guess the rumors are true: Tesfaye thinks Loverboy is singing about him when they say, “Everybody’s working for the weekend.”

Five Comic Book Movies Let's All Just Agree Don't Exist
15 jul 2013 23:48

On the heels of our X-Force discussion came a valuable and intelligent idea: Just erasing the concept of certain comic book movies from existence. This is an idea we can get behind, not least because, let's face it, there are some painful, painful comic book movies out there. And they kinda need to go. So, as a humble method of discussion, we present these five, with reasons why. We'll include YouTube clips for those who might have forgotten, and we'll limit it to movies that saw wide theatrical release. And we'll suggest some replacements.

5 Reasons 'Pacific Rim' Fails As A Kaiju Movie
15 jul 2013 23:47

Like a lot of geeks who came up during the 90s, I was briefly pretty into Japanese giant monsters (known as kaiju in their homeland). The (ultimately disappointing) Hollywood version of Godzilla was on the way, so all the classic Toho giant monster movies were re-issued on video and available at Blockbuster, and I watched every one of them I could get my hands on. Yes, they were cheesy as hell for the most part, but there was also something undeniably appealing about them. So, needless to say, I was intrigued by the prospect of Pacific Rim — a tribute to classic kaiju movies from the guy who totally nailed Blade and Hellboy? I’m there! Unfortunately, while Pacific Rim is by no means a terrible film, it wasn’t much of a kaiju movie. Certainly not the labor-of-love tribute to giant rubber monsters I was hoping it would be. How did Pacific Rim miss the mark? Well (SPOILERS AHEAD!)…

Anti-slavery alphabet

While the fight against slavery in the United States waged on, more than a decade before culminating with the Emancipation Proclamation, abolitionist sisters Hannah and Mary Townsend decided to take their efforts in a new direction. Instead of only aiming their anti-slavery rhetoric at the offending adults, they opted to reach out to the next generation through basic education. The result was a pamphlet entitled “The Anti-slavery Alphabet,” published in 1846 and preserved now by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History…

Photographer Has Been Taking Terrific Selfies For 12 Years

Here’s some fantastic inspiration to kick start your day. Photographer Jeff Harris has been embarking on a photographic project that has lasted 12 years. Each day he took a new portrait of himself and the world around him – but this isn’t just one giant ego trip. Whilst our social networks are flooded with endless ‘selfies’, Jeff has deliberately pushed himself to experience new environments, situations and emotions to ensure the photograph he took each day, was more interesting than the last. “I would make all these resolutions to keep a diary, but by February they would fizzle out. That’s when I realised I could make 5mins in a day to take a self portrait. I started in 1999 and a lot of the earlier shots were very repetitive and boring, but the longer I did it, the stronger my visual sense became. It’s one of those things the longer you do it, the harder it is to stop.” His unique & creative photographs have been featured in both Cancer Connections: Images of Hope and Courage Across Canada & Auto Focus: The Self-Portrait in Contemporary Photography He’s even put together a warm and genuine video, detailing the highs and lows of his story, his traumatic battle with cancer, how it’s changed him and what his future potentially holds. So next time you’re about to take a selfie, think of Jeff and how he might have taken it.
