Adorable Series of Babies Sucking on Lemons for the Very First Time
14 aug 2013 12:39
Starting to make its way around the web is this incredibly adorable series called Pucker of babies sucking on lemons for the very first time. Photographer David Wile captured the babies' priceless expressions which will make you do everything from purse your own lips to laugh out loud. Wearing just a bib on top and set against a blue background, the babies really show all of their emotions. Of course, it's safe to say that no babies were harmed in this production. In fact, some even seemed to enjoy the sensory shocking experience! If you'll remember, David Wile is the same photographer who was behind Splash, the fun photo series documenting the hilarious expressions of people and animals who got a bucket of water poured on their heads. My guess is that he loves seeing authentic reactions.

The Cutest Little Kitten Turns into a Mini-Lion
14 aug 2013 12:43
The long-haired Persian (seen left) is now one and half years old and she's undergone a dramatic change. Despite daily brushings, Daisy's fur would get lots of clumps that were too close to her skin to properly cut off. On the advice of his vet, Torode decided that Daisy needed a haircut. Not just any haircut, of course, but one that had tons of personality!

21 aug 2013 11:07
Outside of Lady Gaga’s hotel on Sunday a reportedly homeless man was waiting in line with other fans to give Gaga an engagement ring. According to Gaga fans passing the photos around, Gaga graciously accepted the ring. And when she went to pose with the man for photos, he told her, “But I smell.” To which she replied, “Don’t worry, I smell too.” She gave the man a rose, some money, and posed for a series of pictures with him.

New York City is constantly evolving and growing, making it difficult to document every change that has occurred, but NYC Grid is taking a stab at it. Run by Paul Sahner the ambitious website seeks to map the entire city "street by street and block by block" through photos. In addition to simply capturing present-day neighborhoods, though, the site also gives a peek of what specific areas looked like in the past, comparing the two in its "Before & After" section.

Spectacular Shots of This Year's Perseid Meteor Shower
29 aug 2013 13:35

A spectacular light show is put on at night for stargazers every year as Perseid meteors streak through the sky. For a few nights, the annual event is captured by photographers from around the world, resulting in a stunning collection of images of our atmosphere being lit up by showering meteors. Yahoo! News has curated a number of shots from this year's event into a dazzling Flickr gallery. Each image offers a scenic view of the naturally occurring cosmic show as Earth passes through debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet (causing said comet's dust to enter through our atmosphere at approximately 132,000 mph). It's said that there can be up to 100 meteors per hour in these few days with the promise of "fireball" meteors that can be as bright as Venus.

Spectacular Shots of Japan's Summertime Fireworks Festivals
29 aug 2013 13:39

While many of us have to wait for special holidays like New Years or the 4th of July to see a spectacular fireworks show, those living in Japan get to enjoy them almost every weekend throughout the summer (though most are held in July and August). The signature summer event in Japan is called Hanabi, which means "flowers of fire" in Japanese. It's easy to see why as these incredible fireworks shows involves fireworks that appear like blooming flower arrangements. As Japan Monthly Web Magazine states, "The creation of fireworks is to arrange flowers, so to speak. The timing in which they are launched displays the craftsmanship behind them, making the fire flowers bloom in perfect intervals." Hundreds of thousands of spectators come out to see some of the main fireworks shows where experts bring out the most advanced pyrotechnics and synchronize them in stunning fashion. Here are ten of our favorite shots that show just how breathtaking it can get.

Magical Underwater Photos of Freely Flowing Figures
29 aug 2013 14:23
Finnish photographer Susanna Majuri presents a dreamy escape where the human form flows freely. The fine art photographer's portfolio boasts a number of imaginative scenes, all taking place underwater. There's a painterly quality about her work that makes the viewer question whether they're actually looking at a photograph or an oil painting. Despite having to hold their breath while being submerged in water, the characters in each frame seem unaffected by their confinement. They float through the translucent density with an ease in their motion as they bathe in their surroundings. The artistic photographer even manages to present her subjects in surreal scenes, each with their own magical narratives.

Playfully Surreal Scenes Blend Illusions with Reality
30 aug 2013 13:56
Photographer Oleksandr Hnatenko brings his imagination to life with this extensive collection of surreal scenes. His series, entitled S. Real, captures a strong contrast between shadows and lights to produce the visually dynamic moments. In each photograph, the Austria-based artist invites his viewers into a bizarre world filled with unique perspectives, optical illusions, and confusing spaces. By naturally blending the concrete with the conceptual, Hnatenko creates playfully contrived realities in which his subjects hide behind fish eyes and top hats, bodies magically disappear into the floor, and normal expectations are completely defied. He says, "In the search for reality, you come across many things, some that are simple, some old, some new, some that are eye-catching, in color or in monochrome, visible things and some hidden from view, some things with sense and some without…Surreal moments are born out of this."

Hyperrealistic Turbulent Skies Reveal the Power of Nature
30 aug 2013 14:18
The Kingdom is a visually stunning series by world-renowned graphic designer, photographer, and producer Seb Janiak. The images focus on massive accumulations of clouds in the sky, visually portraying the power of nature as it swirls overhead. In each composition, viewers will quickly get lost in the lively, dramatic clouds that lead directly to a bright central point. The French artist created "digital matte painting," a technique in which several images are layered together to produce one hyperrealistic photograph. In each of these compositions, he draws on that technique to create a fantasy world displayed in the turbulent skies. He focuses on nature and its mysterious forces to create each breathtaking scene. The transforming clouds reveal the changing light throughout a full day, moving from bright daylight to the shadows of moonlight that reveal twinkling clusters of stars.

Old Relics Create a Visual History of Our Past
04 sep 2013 13:43
As the digital age continues to dominate our world, from smart phones to 3D TVs to everything in between, the days of typewriters and rotary dial phones are moving further and further into the past. In honor of a more simple time, artist Robert Moran created this series entitled Relics. For each image, he isolated old fashioned objects and documented them as a type of visual record. The Maine-based photographer created the project to preserve the memory of inventions that have provided a foundation for today's high-speed technology. The centrally placed antiques are illuminated with strong lighting, which produces dramatic shadows that fall onto the wall behind. In each photograph, Moran provides his viewers with a peaceful moment to ponder the original function of each vintage machine, to investigate the scratches, cracks, and wear and tear, and to consider how the items have affected our everyday world.

Stills from the Lion King vs A Real Life Safari
04 sep 2013 13:58
Redditor and fellow Canadian Brandon Heuser recently took the trip of a lifetime to the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. After returning to his hometown of Vancouver, he decided to rewatch Disney’s The Lion King. Throughout the film he caught himself saying, “hey I have a photo like that!”. Feeling inspired, he decided to take stills from the movie and compare them to photos he had taken on his trip. The results were shared last month on Reddit. The accompanying 24-picture album on Imgur has been viewed over 350,000 times since. While not every shot is ‘identical’ (e.g., Rafiki is a mandrill not a baboon) the similarities are quite astounding.

Surreally Absurd GIFs by Bill Domonkos
05 sep 2013 12:57
Visual artist and experimental filmmaker Bill Domonkos manipulates archive photos and old film footage into surreally absurd gifs. The multifaceted artist's otherworldly creations reflect his fascination with repurposing and combining moving images of yesteryear. Each gif is wackier than the next, presenting a wild scene clearly accomplished with digital editing and special effects. Domonkos' affinity for working with vintage, black and white images adds to the curious nature of his work. His altered take on the past is like one big sci-fi experiment, reminiscent of early avant-garde cinema. Instead of a simple portrait of a woman's profile, the artist adds his creative touch to simulate a kinetic mechanism running endlessly on a her headgear. In Domonkos' world, it is almost fitting that a projection of a jockey riding his race horse plays on a loop in a sink bowl.
