9 Facts About ‘Tropic Thunder’ That Will Change How You Watch it
14 jun 2013 15:06
‘Tropic Thunder’ pulled off something few movies have — it was both a hilarious satire on the movie industry and a legitimate action flick. It’s hard to mix both and find success (many movies have tried) but the screenplay written by Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen did both. The film was a success, retaining the number one position at the box office for three straight weeks, and earned $180 million during its theater run. We’d pay to watch it again just to see Tom Cruise. Here are nine odd facts about ‘Tropic Thunder’ that will change the way you watch the movie.

10 Scary Amusement Park Rides Described: All are Terrifying!
14 jun 2013 14:54
“Rides are safe,” they said. “Calm down and eat your cotton candy,” they said. Then my coaster slid backwards down a steep hill, mid-climb and it was all over. I wish I could go back in time to before my ride in the Hypersonic XLC at King’s Dominion in Virginia. Right before the ride malfunctioned. Not because anything happened, but because it ruined me, and now I’m scared of rides. Whether you love them or hate them, let’s all get a little panicky together with this list of 10 scary amusement park rides, as described by me, a person terrified by every single one of them.

This New International Trailer For 'The Wolverine' Is Pretty Okay
14 jun 2013 14:46
An international trailer for The Wolverine is out, and it includes plenty of new footage of Viper (Svetlana Khodchenkova) doing her creepy Viper thing with the acidy spit and the molting skin with the ripping off of her own face and there goes my appetite. As for the picture up top, we were inspired to alter this tweeted photo and add Grumpy Cat. Which one is Grumpy Cat and which one is Wolverine? Who knows, but they’ll both cut a fool.

Movie Trailer: Magic Magic, starring Michael Cera
14 jun 2013 14:44
Few people I write about inspire as much passionate hatred as Michael Cera, which sort of bums me out because I truly believe that there aren’t many comedy actors out there who can pull off the kinds of scenes he can. I assume most of the hate comes from him playing a lot of similar characters (a complaint no one makes about Jack Nicholson), but as if to throw the haters a bone, here’s Cera playing a weird, fruity, drunken ex-pat in Chile who becomes some kind of fatal attraction for Juno Temple in director Sebastián Silva’s Magic Magic, which played at Sundance and hits DVD August 6th. At least it’s a departure, right? And don’t tell me Michael Cera isn’t totally pulling off creepy here. Incidentally, “Hey, you wanna come pull off creepy?” is one of my favorite pick-up lines.

8 Narcissistic Lines From Kanye West's NY Times Interview
14 jun 2013 14:43
With Yeezus coming out in less than a week, we’re going to be hearing a lot about Kanye West, which is exactly how Kanye West likes it. Because he’s Kanye West. Right, Kanye West? Right, Kanye West. This morning, the New York Times published a fascinating, must-read interview between West and Jon Caramanica, who spoke to the rapper/icon/mogul/Cleveland Show guest star about, well, everything. The new album, the Taylor Swift incident, the Jay-Z, the Kardashian — it’s West’s first interview in years, and Caramanica covered as much as he could. Naturally, West was at his most brilliant, boastful self. Here are but a few of his most narcissist NUGGETS.

Nobody wants to see my drawings of Norman Borlaug and Irena Sendler as Captain Planet and Power Girl. As for Billy, he drew superhero versions of Morrissey, Ian Curtis, Siouxsie, Mark Motherbaugh of DEVO, John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), Billy Idol, and Robert Smith of The Cure. Pop Culture Characters On Their Day Off (Art By Kiersten Essenpreis)
14 jun 2013 14:10
With so much lively up-beat, fresh pop art coming out these days, it's hard to keep up. Today, I am glad I found the work of Kiersten Essenpreis, who reminds us of the irony in art, especially in this latest collection. I also appreciate her for creating the best Halloween costume based on 1988's They Live. Now Kiersten Essenpreis is showing a series at Gallery 1988 East in which she illustrates what her favorite movie and TV characters are doing on their days off. Check out some of our favorites below to find out what actually happened to the cat in Alien and to see who's been carving all of those bear sculptures into tree stumps. The rest of the works are available at Essenpreis' website. Originals and prints may still be for sale at Gallery 1988 (until May 25th) or at her Etsy store. http://www.etsy.com/shop/KierstenEssenpreis

James Franco's This Is The End Mural Is Not Flattering To Jonah Hill
14 jun 2013 14:00
Ironic modern day renaissance man and professional dicknoser James Franco recently painted a mural in Williamsburg (because of course he did) depicting himself and all his co-stars in his new apocolyptic buddy comedy, “This Is The End” (opens today, possibly excellent). But Franco apparently didn’t run any of the likenesses by his co-stars, as Jonah Hill — who seems a bit temperamental — is a little bummed out about being depicted as a morphine addict from Picasso’s blue period, as he explained to Conan last night after telling stories of being owned in a dark theater and making the mistake of asking Ice Cube who the greatest rapper of all-time is. Mural stuff starts around the 3:30 mark.

Corona Light Explores The Intense World Of Animal On Animal Hunting
14 jun 2013 13:53
We prefer our online beer commercials succinct, bizarre, and heavy on talking animals ironically participating in human activities. Enter Corona Light’s new “Ditch the Herd” spot that hits on all points. Not to give the whole thing away, but a deer hunting sheep is a conflicted sheep. Pretty sure the full backstory is an epic Donnie Brasco meets Babe sort of tale that deserves a prequel.

News Bloopers: A Compilation Of Animals Attacking Reporters
14 jun 2013 13:51
Hoo boy, do I love news bloopers where animals attack reporters on live television. I love them so much. Every time I see an animal in the shot, my brain immediately kicks into overdrive. “Freak out. Do it. Do it. DO IT,” I think to myself as I stare lasers at the screen in an attempt to will the animal into losing its mind that very moment. I can’t get enough. Maybe I just love the chaos. Maybe I secretly hate reporters. Who knows? The important thing here is that if a reporter is holding a cat and that cat doesn’t start screeching, clawing, or biting at some point during the segment, my entire day is ruined. That’s why this compilation is so great. It is almost eight uninterrupted minutes of animals ruining live television, with no filler or fakeouts. All your favorite hits are there: Snake Bites Guy, Cat Screeches At Lady, Ostrich Unties Dude’s Bow Tie, Goat Headbutts Woman In The Crotch, etc. My only complaint here is that this video isn’t three days long. I wouldn’t even get up to eat.

8 Classic Rock Songs That Shouldn't Be On Radio
14 jun 2013 13:34
I have learned three things while listening to the radio during my drive from New York to Bonnaroo: 1. The radio is terrible. 2. I can save HOW much money by switching my insurance to Geico?!? 3. The radio is really, really terrible. But seriously, the radio is REALLY terrible. My rental car doesn't have an iPod outlet, and I sadly forget to bring my CD binders that I haven't touched in five years along with me, so for the 13-hour drive, I'm left to rely on the Crazy Ira and the Douches of the FM world. It's maddening, especially because the same damn songs are played after time after time (including "Time After Time"). There's something reassuring, I suppose, in 99.5 The River in Albany, New York, playing "In Your Eyes" at the same time as 103.4 The Skunk in Salem, West Virgina, but actually, no, there's not. As someone who grew up listening to classic rock radio (i.e. songs recorded between the 1960s and 1980s), here are eight songs that should be taken out of the rotation...forever. *toilet flush*

Beautiful, realistic dog portraits made by scraping ink off of clay
14 jun 2013 13:11
Scratchboard is an artistic medium in which an etching tool such as an X-Acto knife is used to scrape through a layer of ink into a foundational layer of clay underneath. In the case of these images from Cristina Penescu, coatings of black ink have been punctiliously poked and scraped thousands of times each so that in the contrast between the ink that is left on the board and white clay beneath it, we see the stunning images of wolves and other dogs…

Literary Slip
14 jun 2013 11:36

London-based artist Jonathan Wolstenholme's love of literature has inspired him to create a number of whimsical watercolor paintings depicting books with their own set of arms and hands. Rather than simply lying in a bookshelf, waiting to be picked out from a row of similarly shaped novels and read, Wostenholme's surreal characters are given the ability to scoop up or even write their own books. The personified volumes of printed words can be seen engaging in the sorts of activities you'd imagine the scholarly type from classic fiction to be doing like writing with a glass of wine in one hand or smoking a pipe while playing a round of dominos with a fellow bookish intellectual. Wolstenholme even whimsically titles each of his paintings with a clever play on words. In this series, a "literary slip" is a humanized book actually slipping on an ill-placed banana peel.

Lightscapes is an experimental work by London-based designer Troy Hyde that takes satellite images of some of the most lively cities in the world and transforms them into flickering animated images. The series takes an extremely zoomed out look at these landscapes at night that are spectacularly lined and illuminated by lights. Much like someone on earth looking up at the night sky to admire the twinkling stars, this collection reverses the perspective of the viewer as though they are in the sky looking down at the sparkling dance of manmade lights on our planet. Each flicker seems to signify a sense of life and movement.

Cute Miniature Crocheted Animals by Su Ami
14 jun 2013 10:45
A family-run crocheting manufacture from Vietnam proves that size doesn’t matter! Their miniature crocheted animals are so small that they fit on a finger tip, and some of them hardly reach 1/4 of an inch. The idea for the business was inspired by the youngest (10-year-old) member of the family, who’s greatly fond of various movie characters and loves animals. Her nickname even ended up being the name of the company.

Dad Guesses Game Of Thrones Character Names With Hilarious Results
13 jun 2013 19:01
With a stroke of brilliance that deserves to be chronicled in some sort of pop culture digest, one Game of Thrones fan decided to quiz his father — who regularly watches the show with him — thirty minutes after the season three finale ended with pictures of all the different characters to see how many his dad could name. He then of course made images and shared the fun with his buddies on r/GameOfThrones. The results are — of course — glorious, and vary from nailing Jon Snow and Gilly to re-christening Bran Stark as James Stark and somehow offering up incorrect two syllable non-words for Hodor. Seriously, he missed Hodor. Twice! The whole thing is just the perfect combination of zeitgeist meets massive confusing ensemble meets dad brain meets internet good times. The question marks are a nice touch as well. I thought.

A GIF Of A Russian Kid Dancing Set To Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky'
13 jun 2013 19:00
Here’s what happened… Last week Cajun Boy posted a video of a sunglasses-wearing kid dancing his heart out inside a Russian disco. Then I stumbled across a GIF of it. Then I watched the GIF for five straight minutes. Then I closed the tab. Then I opened the tab back up. Then I watched it for another 10 minutes. Then I opened up my video editing software and copied and pasted it a million times, and laid the whole thing over the song “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk. (Similar to the GIF loop videos I’ve made before.) Then I uploaded the video to YouTube, and I watched it 200 times over the next few days. And now I’m sharing it with you. Not to toot my own horn here, but I really think this video is a more powerful anti-depressant than anything Big Pharma will ever cook up in a lab, maybe even more powerful than dogs riding in cars. You are very welcome.

Does The Rock have an Under Armour sponsorship?
13 jun 2013 18:54
The Rock's reality show, The Hero, has its second episode tonight on TNT, and I thought this was as good time a time as any to put out to you the reader a question that's been on our minds for some time now: has The Rock run out of actual shirts? Because, as you can see on the following pages, he appears to be wearing the same Under Armour rash guard in at least two separate movies, and in his TV show. Now, I know it's tempting to just think "Haha, The Rock wears nothing but spandex baby tees so no one forgets that he's buff, lol!" and then dismiss it and go on about your day. But before the lollercopter lands I want you to think about the historical precedent here. Has there been an actor before The Rock who could dictate his own wardrobe? And not in an "is it cool if I wear this jacket" kind of way, but in a "my contract specifies that my character has to wear this sponsor-approved athletic apparel" kind of way. Nike revolutionized the shoe business by sponsoring individual athletes in the 80s. Is Under Armour revolutionizing the spandex rashguard industry by sponsoring actor/wrestlers in the 21st century? Mark my words, friends, at this rate, one day a wrestler will be elected president, and companies will scramble for the right to put their logo on his do-rag.

PETA Teams Up With MMA Fighters For Online Game, 'Cage Fight'
13 jun 2013 18:53
The controversial animal rights group launched an online video game this week that allows you to play as UFC Middleweight Jake Shields (who is fighting Tyron Woodley at UFC 161 this weekend), former UFC middleweight and welterweight Aaron Simpson (currently in the World Series of Fighting) or Tachi Palace Fights Featherweight Champion Georgi Karakhanyan as you take on “a secret underground animal testing ring”. If there are three things that I love, they are MMA fights, helping defenseless animals (without acting like a-holes and defeating the purpose of your efforts) and wasting a ton of time by playing an 8-bit video game. So on this occasion, I am happy to say, “Well done, PETA”. Now grab yourself a bowl of Doritos and a giant Mountain Dew, and get ready for hours of gaming.

Roy Nelson Still Confident About His Contract Ahead Of UFC 161
13 jun 2013 18:50
We’re just two days away from the UFC 161 Pay-Per-View event, live from Winnipeg, Manitoba, as the struggling UFC Bantamweight division has left us without a title fight, and instead with a co-main event that features Rashad Evans taking on Dan Henderson and “Big Country” Roy Nelson facing “Michael” Stipe Miocic. the biggest news involving UFC 161 is the contract situation of Nelson, as he wants to be paid significantly more than the $24,000 base amount that he currently receives just for showing up. Big Country’s contract is up after this fight, and the popular assumption is that UFC President Dana White stuck the No. 5-ranked heavyweight in this meaningless match because he refused to sign the extension that the UFC offered. That, of course, led to White dubbing Nelson “the smartest guy on Earth” and a “f*cking genius”, which Nelson took as a compliment. Yesterday, Nelson also admitted that he thinks Dana White doesn’t like him for an equally flattering reason. “I think he’s star-struck,” Nelson (19-7 MMA, 6-3 UFC), who has been criticized by White for everything from his ragged, everyman appearance to his negotiating tactics, told USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). “Some people get flustered when a bigger star is in the room.”

Man-O-War Are Natures Artists!
13 jun 2013 17:44

Aaron Ansarov is a retired military photographer who has recently turned his attention to a very interesting creature called the Portuguese man-o-war. This animal resembles a jellyfish but actually consists of individual organisms called zooids. Scientists don't know much about it's life because it's impossible to connect tracking devices to this gelatinous marine animal. Aaron started collecting them on the shores of Florida and found that when he puts the men-o-war on his light table and slides them over the surface, they produce magnificent patterns and colors. After that he photoshops the image to have a mirror reflection of the first half making it a complete and proportional piece of art. What a creative and unique collection. If you look closely you can spot different things, such as animal faces, or even people...

Donald Trump And A 'Modern Family' Writer Engage In Epic Twitter Feud

The topic is China. The angle: Trump’s hypocrisy. TO THE TWEETS:

11 GIFs That Prove Parkour Is a Really Bad Idea

If you’ve never heard of parkour, it’s basically when someone jumps and swings and flips on things like brick walls, cement steps and metal railings. Crazy, right? And people only use their superhuman skills to pull off these stunts; no equipment is allowed. So let’s think about this– if you’re rolling down cement steps or trying to leap over a car, things can’t always go smoothly, right? Naw, man! Fails are everywhere in the parkour game, and we have some cringe-worthy GIFs to prove it. This is basically a warning to stay far away from parkour, although these brave efforts are super impressive. Ouch.

‘Convos With My 2-Year-Old’ Returns, And This Time It’s About Cookies

We must say, we admire this dad’s ability to keep his daughter from emitting that very special high-pitched war shriek specific to two-year-olds who are insisting on having another cookie. A skill we have yet to master. Apparently confusing them with big words and then just giving them the cookie seems to do the trick.
