Hello Gas Man. Please. Come in!
28 aug 2013 18:53

If you are like most of the population in America, then you probably have to get your water heater fixed every once in a while. And like other people in America, you probably are home when strange people come into your house to do some repairs. Well, turns out that some people go the extra mile to make gas men... feel special I suppose? I don't even know to be honest. Here, just, take a look at this:

Fox News Reports On Own Rap Music Story
28 aug 2013 18:41

On Monday, the always delightful Juan Williams, who lost his job at NPR after telling Bill O’Reilly he gets “nervous” when he’s on airplanes with Muslims, vomited out some words in the Wall Street Journal about the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. Or more specifically, about the dangers of The Rap Music.

Nick Jonas Posted A Shirtless Selfie To Instagram
28 aug 2013 18:37

As if it wasn’t bad enough for us guys that Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt was out there, bragging about how shredded he looks for his leading role in Guardians of the Galaxy, now we’ve got former teen heart throb and current 20-year old heart throb, Nick Jonas, posting his own shirtless selfie on Instagram, all in the name of “fitness.” The youngest Jonas Brother prefaced his photo with the caveat, “I never do this but…” to which Huma Abedin rolled her eyes and said, “Heard that one before.” But Nick is actually an inspiring idol, as he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 13-years old, and he has done a great deal of work to raise awareness for the disease, both through his own Change for the Children Foundation and with a variety of other organizations. Maybe next he can start a foundation for insecure bloggers who swim in their t-shirts. For other people, I mean. Not me. I’m ripped, too. Shut up.

'Selfies At Serious Places' Shames Photographers
28 aug 2013 18:35

In the near future, all photos will be selfies. It's best to accept this inevitability now. The front page of the New York Times. A picture of Barack Obama taking a selfie with Karolos Papoulias? Sports photojournalists will be obsolete, having been replaced by athletes whipping out their cellphones and snapping a quick shot while running for a touchdown. It's sad, but it's true, and already, the negative effects of the selfie are being chronicled on "Selfies at Serious Places," which aims to shame the kind of people who, well, see above. THUMBS UP FOR GENOCIDE.

The Incredible Monsters & Machines Of The Isle Of Nantes
28 aug 2013 18:27

When it comes to tourism, many countries highlight their unique landmarks (Sydney Opera House in Australia, The Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy) or cultural celebrations (or the Rio Carnival in Brazil & Running Of The Bulls in Spain) as a reason to visit. But Nantes, the 6th largest city in France has an entirely different proposition to lure tourists to their region. Tucked inside several warehouses that were formerly used as shipyards, sits an exhibition titled ‘Machines of the Isle‘ (or if you’re a local Les Machines de l’Île de Nantes) that will genuinely blow your mind. Since it’s inception in 2007 it has captured the imagination of thousands of tourists visiting the area. But what is it exactly? It’s the creation of two artists François Delarozière & Pierre Orefice, their vision is based upon “Visualising a travel-through-time world at the crossroads of the “imaginary worlds” of Jules Verne and the mechanical universe of Leonardo da Vinci.” and if that sounds as ambitious as it does exciting you’d be right. Over the past 6 years, together they’ve built 3 major machines, ‘The Great Elephant’ back in 2007, ‘The Marine Worlds Carrousel’ in 2012 and ‘The Heron Tree’ which will be available to the public in 2014. Of the three, most famous is ‘The Great Elephant’ and it’s not hard to see why. Standing 12M high and stretching 8M wide it’s a structure built from a staggering 45 tons of timber and steel. But what is truly remarkable about the machine, is that was it was designed to actually move and carry members of the public. 49 to be exact and it can do so easily without any issues for around 45min. But it doesn’t end there, Delarozière & Orefice have brought other creatures to life, giant spiders, deadly venus fly traps, pterodactylus and even fish that could swallow you whole all make an appearance as you wind your away around their world. So next time you’re in Europe and what to experience something different away from the hordes and cramped cobble streets of Europe’s tourist traps – why not head over to Nantes? It’s a place where the past and future truly do collide.

Fantastic Manipulations Performed Before The Golden Age Of Photoshop
28 aug 2013 18:26

You’ll rarely see a photo today that hasn’t been manipulated, generously enhanced or overlayed with dozens of filters, but in truth this has been happening since the dawn of photography itself – its just that the process of manipulation has evolved. In the early 1800s and even through to the 1900s, if you wanted to alter your photo to create an illusion it was an incredibly labor intensive process. There was combination printing, photomontages and even overpainting – all took time and all had significant drawbacks. Which makes the following collection of fun and somewhat illusory photographs all the more impressive. They were created during an era where you genuinely had to be measured and considered in how you were adapting the film negative itself. There was no magical ‘undo’ button, just lots of trial and error and trying to adapt the technology as best you could. But its safe to say, thanks to the creativity of those involved, all of these images bear little resemblance to their original photographs – it’s amazing what a little magic can do isn’t it?

15 Cartoons Better at Twerking Than Miley
28 aug 2013 18:24

If Miley Cyrus’ performance at the VMA has turned you off of twerking, or if you just find cartoon butts bouncing around hilarious, this is for you. Or, you could look at it this way — we went through the trouble of parsing through all the twerking GIFs and selecting only the ones that don’t require a NSFW tag. Frankly, it doesn’t matter how you look at it, as long as you look at it, because cartoon butts bouncing up and down ARE hilarious. End of story.

Fake Dinosaur Helps Pull Off Greatest Prank Ever
28 aug 2013 18:24

As far as pranks go, this one is a tyrannosaurus-sized success. In this Japanese video, a man is heading into his office for what appears to be another ho-hum day when, all of the sudden, he sees his co-workers fleeing from what looks like a dinosaur. The frightened man tries to hightail it out of there, not realizing the dinosaur is actually a puppet (note the human feet commandeering the costume). It’s hilarious and kind of makes us wish the countless hidden camera pranks on YouTube make a dedicated effort to up their game. C’mon, USA!

See Miley Cyrus on Classic Hip-Hop Album Covers
28 aug 2013 18:22

Miley Cyrus is apparently ratchet now, and her attempts at twerking seem to suggest she is really trying to mean it. As we sit back and watch her try to ingratiate herself with the hip-hop community, let’s take a moment to think about what could’ve been if Miley had been around during the ’90s and early ’00s and discovered rap when some classic albums were released. Here are some beloved hip-hop albums with Miley on the cover courtesy of TheDrop.fm. As unfortunate as her VMA performance was, it could be way, way worse.

The 'Dreams Are Real' Music Video Is So Very Internet

Stoned Patrick Stewart Explains 'Quadruple Take'
28 aug 2013 18:14

Sir Patrick Stewart, the only knighted actor to ever give a master ACTING course on an animated show starring an alien and a talking goldfish, is now offering private lessons to his girlfriend, Sunny Ozell. Last night, she uploaded a video of one such lesson, apparently filmed in a tree house after firing up a doob, in which Stewart explains the complexities of the “quadruple take” using my new security answer for everything, “Her buns ARE the best.” My acting experience is limited to not screaming when I’m told “how great CSI was,” but I’d pay good money to have Stewart teach me all of the finest sitcom tropes. The spit take, the jaw drop, the scheduling two dates on the same night across the street from one another. Throw in a animal reaction shot exercise with Spot, and I’d start today.

PBS's Game/Show Argues Mario Will Be Around In 2525
28 aug 2013 18:12

PBS was pretty slow to embrace the Internet, but in the last few years they’ve really gone full out. They’ve remixed Mr. Rogers, they’ve been doing some pretty compelling short documentaries about all sorts of topics. And their first dedicated webseries about video games, Game/Show, is… really interesting, actually. First of all, it’s hosted by James Warren of Kill Screen, who’s probably one of the better games journalists out there at the moment. Secondly, it makes a pretty compelling case that long after everybody reading this is dust, we’ll still be playing Mario games:

Watch Olivia Munn And Letterman Dissect Her Viral Swing Fall Video
28 aug 2013 18:10

Olivia Munn is a good talk show guest. She’s funny and quirky and can somehow find a way to arouse you with her Tiger Mom abuse stories, so of course just a little over a week after falling off an indoor swing and dislocating her shoulder she shared the viral video of the incident with David Letterman who had not yet seen it. Olivia explaining the whole thing to Dave is reason enough to watch, but add Letterman’s endless fascination with the physics of the swing and just where and how she fell to sustain such injuries and you’ve got yourself some good television. He also can’t figure out how to say her last name at the end, which I enjoyed a little too much. And here’s the first segment of her describing how she gets uncomfortable at fashion shows so she just mimics whatever Catherine Zeta-Jones is doing. Needs more boob window, but good times nonetheless.

'Star Drunk' Proves All Sci-Fi Franchises Need More Booze (VIDEO)
28 aug 2013 18:09

Ever wanted to see a sci-fi short film written and performed by drunk people? Well, that’s probably half of all films, but Star Drunk did it intentionally. Of course this happened in Portland. Star Drunk is an experiment in writing a short film while drunk; several writers from Portland got together one night to write the script. We promised each other that whatever we wrote that night, we’d produce as a short film. We ended up creating a Star Trek-Star Wars-Battlestar Galactica’esque parody with laser gun fights and space battles. Taking the concept a step further (and stranger), we asked our cast to be drunk on the night of filming. [ChrisRWilsonFilm] Those actors include Greg James, Adam Elliot Davis, Kyle Smith, Britt Harris, Alexander Fraser, and Bethany Jacobs (pictured above) doing an impression of Carol Marcus from Star Trek Into Darkness.

When Is The 'Breaking Bad' Series Finale? That's A Big Night Of TV
28 aug 2013 18:06

Sunday, September 29 is most notable for our purposes because it is the date of the series finale of Breaking Bad. That is, provided we all survive until then and don’t just start vibrating at such a high frequency from the intensity and breakneck pace of the episodes leading up to it that we burst into a billion zillion little particles and eventually settle back down to the earth as a fine, sand-like sediment layer on the crust. (Scientists thousands of years from now will refer to this as the Heisenberg layer. It will be totally devoid of nutrients, but if you put your ear very close to it, you will hear it ramble on and on about its feelings about Skyler and what it thinks Walt did with the ricin.) But that’s not the only thing on television that night. Far from it. Sunday, September 29 also features a primetime football game on NBC (always a ratings juggernaut), an episode of Boardwalk Empire on HBO, and a SLEW of premieres, including: Homeland; the final season of Eastbound & Down; The Good Wife; The Simpsons, Bob’s Burgers, and the rest of Fox’s animation block; The Amazing Race for reality TV fans; and the series premiere of both Lizzy Caplan’s Masters of Sex and Stephen Merchant’s Hello Ladies. Now, none of this is to say that anything in that paragraph should prevent you from watching the series finale of one of the best television dramas of the past decade or so. But I did want to give you a month of notice in case you want to send your DVR off to some martial arts master for an intense training program to help it prepare. I’ve seen it work before....

Bryan Cranston Cast As Lex Luthor In 'Man of Steel 2' Fan-Made Video
28 aug 2013 17:13

When it was announced that Ben Affleck is our new Batman and Bryan Cranston may be Lex Luthor, we knew the fan mashups would roll in (Example: Southie Batman!). This one, however, threw the fulminated mercury against the wall and blew everyone else away. SoylentBrak1 pieced together footage from twenty properties including Breaking Bad, Man Of Steel, The Dark Knight, Total Recall (2012), Daredevil, and more. It’s all set to “I Will Find Him” and “Arcade” from Han Zimmer’s excellent Man Of Steel score. Let this video serve as a reminder why Warner seriously needs to cast Bryan Cranston as Lex Luthor. Everyone else auditioning best stay out of his territory.

Amazon Enables 1-Click Within All Your Android Apps
28 aug 2013 17:13

In-app purchases are a pretty big deal to developers; there’s a reason the “top grossing” apps in the Android store are mostly free. Now Amazon is trying to extend that logic to buying… well, anything you see inside an app. Amazon calls it the “Mobile Associates API”, and essentially, it means you can make anything in an app an ad for it on Amazon. And it’s not necessarily a bad deal for developers, either: "The Mobile Associates API allows developers to sell real products from the millions of items at Amazon, whether physical or digital, from inside their apps or games while earning up to 6% in advertising fees from those purchases. The Mobile Associates API is an extension of Amazon Associates, our successful web-based affiliate program created in 1996, paying advertising fees to hundreds of thousands of affiliates worldwide." 6% may not sound like much, but consider that some apps can be seen by millions of people in a given day. 1% of those buying could put a lot of cash in the pockets of developers, and you have to admit, being able to click a link to buy a book is a lot less annoying than having to hit up your friends on Facebook for in-game gold. The ultimate goal, of course, is to crush all retailers under Amazon’s heel as it builds a massive fulfillment network that makes consumer gratification instant and Jeff Bezos can afford his own planet. But, hey, it’s convenient!

Listen To Jon Lajoie's Miley Cyrus Song
28 aug 2013 17:10

I don’t hate Miley Cyrus. THERE I SAID IT. I’d much rather have a shameless pop star that I can’t look away from than the one who’s as stuffy and boring as whatever a Austin Mahone is. They’re radio-ready machines; their main cultural purpose is to make us feel bad for loving their music and being fascinated by them. What Miley Cyrus did at the VMAs wasn’t important or even good (it DEFINITELY wasn’t good), but her dancing around in her underwear while raping a bunch of stuffed bears is far more entertaining Lady Gaga’s latest art-fart project. In response to those like MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski who called Miley a disruptive slut, basically, Jon Lajoie, best known as Taco from The League, recorded a song called “Miley, You’re a Good Girl.” Sample lyric: “We want topless women in our music videos/We want pop stars acting like they’re in a porno/You know we want it and get what we asked for/But then Miley does it, we say OH MY GOD NO.” Lajoie’s also working on a strain called Twerkin’ Tush.

What If Dexter Writers Wrote Breaking Bad?
27 aug 2013 22:29

n yesterday’s next day Breaking Bad discussion a lot of you voiced your confusion and calls of bullsh*t as to how and when the light finally turned on for Jesse with regards to the ricin theft/Brock poisoning/Huell’s delicate hot dog fingers. Even Anderson Cooper didn’t know what the hell was going on. I personally felt like the groundwork had been sufficiently laid down and it made for a better reveal that they didn’t hold our hand through it. But, you know, I’m cursed with ridiculous perception skills and high cheek bones. We can agree to disagree if you feel differently, but we should also agree that given some perspective as to how it probably would have been handled by other, much hack-ier writing teams, Breaking Bad’s version of divisive writing is still superior to everything else on its best day. To really hammer this home one Redditor created the below graphic to remind us all why we’re so damn lucky.

'Justified's' Walton Goggins Is Developing A New Drama For Fox
27 aug 2013 22:29

Okay, good news and bad news. GOOD NEWS: Walton Goggins — the man behind the well-read, meth-slinging, gun-toting, evangelizing, lightning-strike-hair-having, ex-sister-in-law-marrying, Harlan County felony aficionado Boyd Crowder — is currently developing a new cop drama for Fox titled “Gringo” that will “revolve around an American cop who moves south of the border with his Mexican wife and ends up caught in the middle of the cartel wars.” BAD NEWS: Despite “an American cop who moves south of the border with his Mexican wife and ends up caught in the middle of the cartel wars” sounding like a terrific role for Walton Goggins, there is no word yet whether he will be playing the titular gringo. All we know so far is that he and Adam Fierro (a former executive producer on The Shield) will be teaming up to executive produce, and that the two of them co-wrote the story. BUT: If he does end up starring in a big network drama like this, it would probably cut significantly into his availability for Justified, and we just can’t have that at all. BUUUUUUUT: SHERIFF BOYD CROWDER PATROLLING THE STREETS OF JUAREZ??????? I have no idea how to feel about this.

A Supercut Of 'Thomas The Tank Engine' Crashes Set To 'Bodies'
27 aug 2013 22:26

I suppose, in the interest of being as accurate and responsible as possible, I should point out a couple things. First, this supercut of crashes from Thomas the Tank Engine set to “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor” was posted on YouTube over two years ago, and it already has close to 150,000 views, so it’s not exactly the hippest, freshest thing we’ve ever posted here. But I just saw it for the first time a few minutes ago on Laughing Squid and it cracked me up a little, so here we are. Second, technically speaking, the title of the show is actually Thomas & Friends, not Thomas the Tank Engine, and the title of the Drowning Pool song in question is just “Bodies,” which makes my headline inaccurate at best and willfully ignorant at worst. But anyway, with all that out of the way, I’d like to get to my real point here, which is LET THE ENGINES HIT THE FLOOR LET THE ENGINES HIT THE FLOOR. LET THE ENGINES HIT THE FLOOR LET THE ENGINES HIT THE FLOOR.

I suppose, in the interest of being as accurate and responsible as possible, I should point out a couple things.

Revisiting First 'Madden NFL' Soundtrack From 2003
27 aug 2013 22:00

HAPPY MADDEN RELEASE DAY EVERYONE. It's a big event for the video game and sports industries alike, as well as for people who own $250 DeShaun Foster jerseys and aren't above going to Walmart at midnight to pick up a copy (guilty). Our own Dan Seitz already wrote his defense of Madden NFL 25, but I want to take a look and listen to something that's much tougher to defend: the first Madden EA Trax soundtrack. It came back in 2002, when Marshall Faulk graced the cover of Madden 2003, and I'm already sorry for all future Audiovent references. For everyone who hasn't Eternal Sunshine'd Audiovent, though, let's go the tape.

HAPPY MADDEN RELEASE DAY EVERYONE. It's a big event for the video game and sports industries alike, as well as for people who own $250 DeShaun Foster jerseys and aren't above going to Walmart at...

'The Dark Notebook Rises', A Mashup Video Of Batman And 'The Notebook'
27 aug 2013 21:40

Did you think The Dark Knight Rises could have used more romance, and perhaps some voiceover by Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams? Maybe not, but can we agree The Notebook could have used more punching? This mashup video, The Dark Notebook Rises, gives us exactly that. Sure. Why not? At least we can understand what Bane’s saying.

Hugh Laurie's Love Letter To Los Angeles
27 aug 2013 21:39

I present this — Hugh Laurie’s love letter to Los Angeles — to you guys today because I’ve never really been a big fan of LA. It’s always been one of those places I’ve been fine with to visit but would never want to live. But I have to say, Laurie’s pro-LA argument is quite persuasive. I’ve actually come to think that I wouldn’t want to kill myself or someone else if I had to live there.

Mississippi Residents Love Porn More Than You
27 aug 2013 21:35

There are two main insights to be enlightened by from PornHub’s data dump that’s now steaming up the Internet like some sort of steamer, perhaps in Cleveland. Fact the first: America really loves “creampies,” “college,” “teens,” and “compilations.” Those four pornographical categories are the top-searched “adult-based terms” for over 30 states in AMERICA, with the occasional outlier of “anita queen” in Nevada and “smoking” in Wyoming. Fact the second: Mississippi’s love of porn is far greater than your state’s.

Wife Carries Legless Marine Husband In Photo
27 aug 2013 21:20

Rarely do our interests intersect with those of Good Morning America‘s (we hate good things and despise mornings), but this is too good, too dare-I-say heartwarming to not pass along. In 2008, while serving in Afghanistan with the Marines, Jesse Cottle stepped on an IED and lost both of his legs. After returning to the States, Cottle spent months painfully recovering in a hospital and was eventually given prosthetic legs. Then love came a-calling: "After [time] in the hospital, Jesse met his future wife Kelly, 24, in San Diego at a swim meet during one of his first outings with his new prosthetic legs. “His personality and who he is just outweighs his injuries by so much that you forget about it after a while,” Kelly explained." They got married in August of last year. To celebrate, Jesse and Kelly recently visited her family in Boise, Idaho, where they took a series of family portraits, some of which show Jesse carrying her happy husband on her back. One photo, taken by ShutterHappy’s Sarah Ledford, has nearly 11,000 Likes on Facebook because Jesse Cottle is the opposite of mornings, in that: people like him.

Mitch Hurwitz Confirms Arrested Development Movie In The Works
27 aug 2013 21:19

Exactly a month ago Arrested Development creator Mitch Hurwitz and Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos confirmed that Arrested Development would return in some form or another. And in the short amount of time since Mitch Hurwitz has apparently gotten hard to work. He’s just checked in with Rolling Stone to confirm that the next installment is in fact — in his mind anyway — a movie. Mitch Hurwitz has good news for Arrested Development fans. “I’m working on the movie right now,” the show’s creator tells Rolling Stone. “I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.” OK, so it’s not set in stone, but I’ve gotta believe that if this is the direction Hurwitz wants to take the Bluths no one is going to stand in his way. He also must have gotten some form of a go ahead if he’s already working on the feature film version. And since we already knew Arrested Development would be back in some form or another the movie news is super swell and all but what I found most interesting came at the end of the interview…

St. Louis Cardinals Fan Tries To Kick Chicago Cubs Fan
27 aug 2013 17:24

The long-running rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals turned into a one-sided battle last weekend. In this amusing video, a Cardinals fan tries to fight a Cubs fan outside Wrigley Field following the Cubs win. Proving the Cubs aren’t the only ones who are adept at beating themselves, this guy winds up on the ground without even being touched. With the Cardinals knee deep in the pennant race, this may be the closest the team gets to being down and out – a place where the Cubs seem to call home.

Hilarious Video Perfectly Captures the Bozos Play Pickup Basketball
27 aug 2013 17:23

Looking to play a little basketball? Better know what you’re getting yourself into, first. This hilarious video breaks down the types of players you can find in any pickup game. From the guy who’s more concerned with what he wears to the fella who’s constantly calling fouls to the man who’s filled with rage, it’s a spot-on look at the competitors who you can find dotting most playground courts. Hmm, kinda makes us glad we’re couch potatoes who are more interested in watching basketball than playing it.
